A very quick look inside the OWON XDM3051 bench multimeter. I also wanted to see if it was possible to remove the rubber bumpers from the case.

I decided to open mine today and give it a go. The whole meter seems to draw 7 watts or so depending on the backlight. The fan seems to be there to blow air past the rectifier. The 5V fan is marked 0.25A and measures 60mm x 10mm. A deeper fan won't fit easily as it butts up against some wires. The fan seems to draw only about 130mA at 5V. Tried current limiting on my power supply to see how much reduction I would need to get the sound level I would like. I ended up splicing an 18 ohm resistor in one of the fan wires. Seems pretty quiet now.

it wasn't a "Teardown" - it was: "let me open the box" ;-)

I usually just use a Noctua fan and call it "good enough". I am sure you could find some LED bling fans, but I have never understood the desire for a light show. Nice meter for the price.

Jerry, I hope that you share your fan & ducting upgrades for this bench multimeter, including as much "how you actually made and/or modified stuff to fit" as you're willing. Also, how much space does your Agilent device (the one to the right with the large display, at the end of the video) leave between it and the stack of smaller equipment for ventilation flow? Is is "shaped" a bit like old CRTs with enough "curves/tapers" to leave room out of sight of the camera?

Hello Jerry. If you still have that DMM. Is it possible to measure DCV and DCI (DCI as secondary DUAL measurement) in the same time? Of course with usual time offset (relay click possible) as 2 different measurements. If yes, is it also possible to do logging DCV as primary and DCI as secondary measurement? Would also the supplied software allow dual logging of DCV and DCI? Thanks for info. Best, Wendel

yes you can measure DCV and DCI at 'the same time' (it alternates reading each one) BUT bear in mind that the meter has a shared common input for volts and current, which may limit what you can measure. Also note that when the meter switches to reading voltage it breaks the current connection with a relay

This thing is so empty inside - why didn't they make it smaller? You could fit two pcbs vertically rather than one horizontally. Can manufacturing everything on a two pcbs be more expensive than the price of transport being 2x higher due to 2x the size?

Because then you couldn’t stack them, and it would then effectively take up *more* space. If you want something smaller, look at for example the Owon XDM1000 series.

@@bjondersson nah you can stack shallow things very well by using 19" rails or rear brackets like vesa mounts

@@cheater00 That’s true, but very many, dare I say most, don’t have 19” racks. Just look at Jerry’s shelf in the video. That’s what very many labs and desktops look like. And anyway, I’m pretty sure this is the reason they make the boxes the size they are. The manufacturers know what they are doing, and understand the needs of their customers.

On all my Bench equipment the first thing I do is remove the rubber bumpers.....I can't stand them, they sooooo get in the way of stacking equipment neatly.

Yes I totally agree and they are always differently spaced so if they are left in place you end up with a Jenga tower.

Check that both front and rear USBs and the NIC are isolated from input and main board. It does look like they are. Have you tried using the NIC interface yet?

I have it works fine, you just telnet to it on port 3000 and send ascii SCPI commands
