Patriotism is fueled by national leaders, in hopes of rallying people under the guise of greater good, while only using them for their interests. They have to create a Us vs. Them scenario if they wish to fight.

Many people say he's talking about nationalism and I guess that's it. But I don't know about other countries, but in india, there's a lot of people who say they are patriotic, but are actually nationalists. For some people, hating Pakistan is some form of patriotism. It's basic human nature- to have the sense of belongingness. Society has created so many communities and people want to be belonging to these to feel a sense of brotherhood. But along with that comes the distrust, hatred caused over the differences between other communities. Nationalism is the extreme stage of patriotism. The bad thing about patriotism is that it divides human society, creating stereotypes and conflicts. The good thing is, it increases brotherhood between people of the same community and advances development due to competition.
@dendradwar9464

That is fair. Humans like it or not have feelings good, bad and indifferent. Without any feeling / empathy towards the person next to you then the potential for a higher level of disagreement absolutely exists- which potentially can lead to violence. Without some sort of social bonding there is no society. Going too far with anything including patriotism is a bad thing. Too much of anything is bad, there needs to be a balance. What I find ironic with this speaker is he feels more akin to other campaigners for social justice - this is and of itself, simply another form of patriotism expressed through a different medium, very much along the lines of a secular religion.

Thats no Argument against Patriotism. Saying being not patriotic whould actually be good for your country is arguing out of a nationalistic Perspektive. But when that premise is wrong in a war for example. Ukraine war. If they were Not that natioanlistic They whould make worse fighters. And dont Tell me u want prove thats intuitive.

A human life is the most valuable thing that exists and nothing else should be able to reach that level of value, but all i see millions of people sacrificing themselves for what? Excellent speech. Nationalism is entirely default in my generation; we don’t know anything else. But the idea that people of empires before, like the Roman or Ottoman Empire, composed of multiple ethnicities and identities, were satisfied within the empire, and able to cross entire continents without a passport or visa, is so interesting. Seeing ourselves and others as humans first, is so important to be humane to others.

The coming together of humanity is a high ideal something noble to strive for, this utopia is it possible ? perhaps for future generations, human beings are somewhat ego driven social creatures that group together depending on beliefs and value systems, being proud of ones country indeed nationalism itself is a kind of self preservation, in order to maintain and protect ones culture and way of life, people dislike change particularly in terms of perceived erosion of national identities, not just in the uk but globally. Each country has an element within that feels that there way of life is better or superior than that of others, rightly or wrongly world superpowers driven by greed & economic dominance have imposed their will on others throughout history for thousands of years, it’s neither right or morally fair to do so, unfortunately there is no sign of this pattern of behaviour stoping any time soon as the changing of the economic power & control switches to China from the USA in the coming decades and countries like Russia India and Africa grow in influence on the world stage, with such changes bring with it upheaval war and conflict, as the powers that be jostle for control, unfortunately we as a species are not in enlightened enough at this present time to change and see the world as a global community & work for the benefit of all, its the only true way forward & should be humanities ultimate goal.

Your detrimentally ignorant, intellectually dishonest, asinine and inept reverence for ‘Western’ lead neo-liberal “globalism” is pretty wonky, flawed to high hell, unsustainable, and unsavory to be honest. But in what way do you need to feel proud for your country at all? Look at the facts objectively, examine them and then decide in which ways your country is more improved than others And don’t rely on that, but rather try and improve the situation in your country even more and help other countries get to the same living standards as the ones you currently love Only by that we can stand united as the world and not be separated by borders anymore As far as I’m concerned we only know and have the earth, we are all equal no matter where you from, because you can only be citizen of the world So if you want to be a patriot, then be a patriot of the world, because being a patriot of a country destroys, kills and doesn’t improve anything

No, it means that you should acknowledge when the chunk of land you live in does something right. You can be happy to live in a country, that's fine, but patriotism pushes your mind to ignore what other countries do as you in turn become more indoctrinated into the ideology that your country is the best. This is why patriotism is bad and why it's dangerous for the human species.

This is stupid. So really, on the logic of "don't choose an opinion because it means declaring a position" is what this boils down to. My country does come first. If I live in the UK I am supposed to put China first? Germany? Mexico. It's left wing word salad.

It’s about putting aside preconceptions of race and nationality and seeing ourselves as all equally human. And how you should help those in need because they are human like yourself. Instead of just being like: “It’s all me, me, me because I’m British and I don’t wanna help anyone who doesn’t speak English. Because of blah blah blah, we won a war once”
