Personally I HATE going to movie theaters. Too many people, inconvenient times, traffic, parking and all the rest, the guy next to you is chomping on something or slurping a drink or smells or whips out his Willie and starts waving it around , , , Ugh! Who needs it? But I love movies and watch them constantly on tv, which is fabulous! I love it! You can pause the film, go to the kitchen or the john or let the dog out, rewind, watch something over again, record it - how can you beat that? Its terrific.

My interpretation of refusing to say a line even when you knew it was in the script is people can sometimes change their definition of a character as they progress through the piece, but if you know the line was in the script and you can hold space for both your developing interpretation and the interpretations that caused the lines to be written you not only have a broader interpretation of the character but a broader ability to merge interpretations with understanding, communication and expression. Even if someone was right when they thought they really knew better than the director or the writer due to how their interpretation of the piece is developing if they wanted people to agree they would have to communicate the reasoning which would be best done well before it gets in the way, not in the exact moment it would cause a problem
@WalterFrith10 ай бұрын
I disagree with Hanks completely when he mentions the guy who says "They don't make great movies anymore. There are no Godfathers etc." and Hanks disagrees and says that there are. No, there aren't. To me, the greatest decades for film in my life have been the 70's and the 90's. The Oscar winner for best picture during the first four years of the 70's were 'Patton', 'The French Connection', 'The Godfather' and 'The Sting'. The first four years of the 90s gave us best picture Oscar winners 'Dances with Wolves', 'The Silence of the Lambs', 'Unforgiven' and 'Schindler's List'. Do you know what the last four years of the 2020's have given us for best picture? 'Nomadland', 'Coda' (GAG...an updated version of the ABC Afterschool Special series from the 70's), 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' and 'Oppenheimer'. Only 'Oppenheimer' can rival the 70's and 90's best picture Oscar winners. So, the motion picture Academy bestows its praises on films every year peer to peer. It's a credible process because people like Hanks and thousands of others in the industry are Academy voting members. If anyone thinks the films so far in the 2020's that have won best picture are as good as the ones from the 70's and 90's, historians would like to tell you that what is being made today is more CONTENT than it is CINEMATIC BRILLAINCE.

Fabulous interview - thanks to all involved. But I do not think anyone there has a clue what AI will bring in a few years, so to think the movie experience of old will prevail I very much doubt. Imagine a future where you get to create a plot and define the environment as a movie director yourself. And it only takes 10 minutes of chatting to a movie-bot and you’re ready to start watching. There would be no paid actors or directors or producers required. You’d sit and watch something you created from your own mind and which was able to be monetised if the product was great, now that’s the future of AI movies - personally I can’t wait…

On the differences between streaming and theatre experiences, I'd reckon that most people are like myself in that I don't go to theatres alone. I haven't been "to the movies" in ages but I used to go quite often all throughout my life. And never once did I go without my family or friends. Grew up being taken by my parents, ended up going with friends or girlfriends in my adulthood. It's an experience wrapped around the film, totally unique to the experience of watching that same film at home alone or even with those same friends. And it isn't one that I'd like to go through solo. Especially now as attendance has plummeted. I'm not trying to go out of my way and spend extra time and money to watch a film alone in a theatre. Being the introvert that I am, I've no problems with watching a movie alone at my house. And if I'm not going to be making a "date" of it, then that's what I'd rather do. As it stands, streaming acts as a catch-all that will get everyone willing to watch a film because it's capable of being delivered to them under their most specific requirements. But theatre will only grab those who are after the "event", not just the film. And that market is always going to be smaller by comparison. I do think these companies would do well to revolutionize the way their business models work, but that's a total crap-shoot.
@datboi_gee4 ай бұрын
@@totallybored5526 Same reason you'd watch something at home with someone. Whether you're talking or not, you're still spending time together and sharing an experience. And to me, that's what the actual movie theatres were always better for. It isn't just the act of sitting in front of the screen and watching the movie. It's another reason to hang out. The car ride, the concessions, BSing through the trailers, the atmosphere of the place, the actual watching of the film itself, and then the discussion on the way out. There's a lot to enjoy there.

The very reason that I built a theater in my house. But, I will say… That there are some films that I prefer to watch in the theater. Simply to be a part of something bigger than myself. The Star Wars movies, Friday the 13th movies, titanic, twister for the first time… there’s quite a few. The thing is, I have all of the latest technology and sound and everything at home, but there is something about sharing an experience with people around you. Seeing other peoples little kid inside of them come out, no matter what age they are… That is just magical. I agree with you about the cell phone BS. What’s the point of going to the theater if you’re just going to sit and play on your phone? Popcorn and soda, it’s part of the experience. Though I will say, the theater near me… For whatever reason, I can go there any day other than the weekend and watch a movie by myself. Maybe, there might be two or four other people, sometimes a dozen… I don’t know how they stay in business. They must make all of their money on the weekend or supplemented by the industry. Regardless, I do enjoy the comfort of home. Kicking my feet up and having the same experience with a few friends. Being able to eat and drink what I want and not having to mortgage your house to do so. Lol.

The host should have asked Tom if film makers really want to make “really good shit” and know they need to produce great content why do large studios like Disney or Lucasfilm keep making films and shows the audience largely reject and consider bad content.
@muhammadfaisal5Y5Ай бұрын
Your problem is with the studios, not the directors or the producers. Marvel Studios might greenlight a project because it fits in their ten year plan. It is the director's and the film crew's job to make it work. Some of the audience may not like the character or another studio that has a connection with Marvel Studios (Disney for example) but all of that has any relevance to the people making the movie. If the movie is good and large proportion of the audience liked it, then it really didn't matter. Think of Deapool and Wolverine and Spidermam No Way Home. The Sony spiderverse is largely unpopular but it didn't stop No Way Home from succeeding. Recently, I read an article in which the author suggested that the Lord of the Rings War of the Rohirrim was only made to retain the rights. Hence, why so much less money was spent on promoting it.

@noam6511 ай бұрын
I think Mr Hanks was mistaken. There are very few really good original films made, in modern times, not as many as in the past. The economics used to be that films were a cheap source of entertainment, in terms of public access to them. With a theater seat costing upwards of $20, the majority of the population, who used to be middle class, who are now working poor, no longer can afford a night out like that, a few times a month. Plain old TV, be it broadcast, cable, or satellite and possibly streaming services are what most can afford. This means that spending the cost of a meal on a single motion picture experience means it it had better be worth it, to generate enthusiasm to continue repeating that expense. This puts pressure on industry investors to churn out remakes of earlier successful films, instead of chancing innovation of new stories, because of the risk of a loss. AI has the potential of destroying the film industry, as we have known it. People can soon be able to create their own films at home, or even have AI do it for them. So a motion picture experience is under even more pressure to deliver. No, the industry is going to have to find ways of becoming a more personal experience across the board. To me, this might mean opening up the guilds for regular personal interaction with the public at dinners, and auditoriums. Aside from rubbing elbows with the famous, hearing old stories, learning techniques we might apply to our own amateur efforts as hobbies, this is a possible future area of new growth for the industry at large, including actors, set design, lighting design, cinematography, sound, carpentry, costumers, literally every single group that contributed to the process can develop this engagement with fans and enthusiasts. We, as a civilization must learn to become community, again, in new ways. This will keep the industry alive, if it goes into the business of organizing these events.

Ask a teenager what movies they like and they’ll reply: Who cares about movies?!

Madam, please put the microphone closer to your voice hole. Thank you.

After seeing a professional interview then reading this, you’ve missed the opportunity to grow. How about saying ‘ as an opportunity to the interviewer, it would be helpful to place the microphone closer to your voice for others to hear better. Thank you’

I saw Napoleon at a Cinema, one of 100 movies worth watching at a Cinema. , Major Movies will ALWAYS be worth watching . Harry Potter, Ltd of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan... BIG MOVIE Blockbusters and other good movies, the problem Tom is most movies are meh ! Even Oppenheimer was on Netflix streaming , Killing the Cinemas.

I didn’t enjoy any of those movies you listed as those didn’t relate to me. I like profound thinking movies and ones that take me on an emotional journey. I’ve found later on in increased years of age, the movies I thought nothing of Ive related to or enjoyed. Depends of what you’re going through, what you’ve experienced and where you are or what your searching for in your time of life depends on if you like the movie or not. Game of thrones I could not see the appeal to it at that time of my life but finally watched it last year and could immerse myself in it. Probably because life was less stressful. Each person is different.

Sounds like a primary-school pupil interviewing the school janitor: 'I think that's really interesting, I think that's some really interesting point [sic.] about how much you can plan for when you make a film, and how many other variables are' (6:37)... 'Thank you, that's really interesting' (13:24). This is a top student at one of the top universities in the world, who represents not only her university but also the world famous debating society she's the president of.

Geez that's a little harsh. It probably wasn't easy to sit in front of her peers and conduct an interview with one of the best actors in the world. There are far worse interviews out there. She actually asked great questions and was very polite. Have a little grace for people.

Damn, did that young lady kill your dog or something? Dude, you need to chill out, develop some respect for others and generally bear in mind that no one is really interested in your opinion either...

Somehow it are aways the 'stars', not the normal people, that make the movie. Over valued, over paid, just doing a job.

Tom shouts a bit too much :). His assertion that who you know has nothing to do with it may hold in some circumstances but it doesn't hurt! :)

This is how people of that age speak and my age speak. With assertion and not the quiet ‘timid’ talk of 20 -24 year old these days. Don’t be reduced in your confidence because we portray confidence.
