I use this grinder and mostly use a French press. She's right, the grinds aren't extremely consistent when course. But they are consistent enough, in my opinion. I don't experience the bitter+sour phenomenon that you get with inconsistent grinding. I'm not a professional, but I can absolutely tell the tasting notes from my coffees. The reason we chose this is because the stainless steel cup is more attractive than clear plastic cups, which show off tiny static-clinging particles.

I think some people have had issues where their cup doesn't latch in to the machine... mine hasn't had that sort of problem. I just took it apart for the first time in over a year and dusted it out and it seems just fine after daily use since I bought it. I'd recommend it... but I don't generally do french press... had one that was sent to me for review and I dropped it off the counter onto linoleum after brewing my first pot and it exploded... was liking it up to that point. Took me awhile to get the grind to my liking, settled on 5 for espresso shots and haven't had to change it regardless of the beans I'm using.

I bought one of these a few years ago and have been learning how to improve my espresso lately. I've taken this all the way down to finest grind... about 8-10 seconds to get 18 grams or so that I weigh out for a double shot. I do now use a WDT for declumping prior to tamping. I also use a puck screen which seems to help avoid channeling. I can't say anything bad about it, I think it's been a reliable inexpensive machine that does what is needed.

I am using the OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder with the fine settings at "2" and time set at "12 seconds" to deliver a perfectly balanced single espresso shot. I hold my Breville Infuser's portafilter under the OXO chute to fill a single walled non-pressurized single shot basket before tamping. The Breville Infuser develops optimum pressure for ideal extraction in the range 2-4 (within the fine range of 1-5). You definitely do NOT need to use a dual walled pressurized basket (as claimed in the video). The OXO does the job (with fineness adjustments to spare): no mess, easy clean-up, and a delicious full flavored brew (using Starbucks medium roast beans in this example). Of course there is no bracket to hold the portafilter in place when grinding, but it takes very little skill to just hold it in place for 12 seconds (24 seconds for a double shot in a double single walled non-pressurized basket). Just be careful to hold the portafilter below the chute and not raise it into the chute as it fills to avoid clogging the machine. If all you do is prepare espresso, there really is no need to use the aluminum grinds catcher at all.

This model has been around for a while. I purchased it for last Black Friday. I find it works quite well, especially for the price. I tend to keep my beans stored in a storage container that allows for off-gassing and just add the beans I want to grind each morning. I use it for cold brew, percolator, and Aeropress, all good results, definitely no discernable difference from my little Hario handheld.

@@tomalexander9797 I sure don't. I bought mine at Bed Bath of all places years ago. I just went on Amazon to see if it was there and it looks like mine is no longer in production, but if you search "Coffee Canister" it looks like there are a number with high reviews. The new ones look better. Mine is just a metal canister, a plastic lid with a rubber middle piece that forms a pocked with a hole in the middle above and below a little glass bead. As the coffee off gasses it rises through the first hole, moves the bead as pressure builds and escapes through the top hole. Simple principle, therefore any product with some sort of escape mechanism with good reviews should be great. Just keep in mind, if you are opening and closing it everyday anyhow (as I do other than the infrequent trip away from home) the need for a sealed canister that off=gasses is probably not even necessary, just a sealed canister or jar probably works in that case.

I've had this for a couple of months, paired with the Oxo 8 cup brewer (which I absolutely love!). I grind in the medium range depending on the beans. I will say that for light to medium roasts it does have a tendency to get hung up on the finer side of medium range - I have to give it a little bump to get it going again. So for the very fine espresso grinds I suspect it will do best with darker roasts (though I haven't tried that yet as I don't yet have an espresso machine). People have mentioned that the cup has a tendency to slide out, which I've noticed as well. I just hold it in place while it grinds - no big deal. Very happy with this for the money.

I bought one. It's fantastic for the money. I love it! I use it for espresso. Yes, I only have a pressurized basket, but at this point, my espresso machine is the limiting factor, not my grinder. If you have or know of a good non-pressurized basket that will actually fit my Delonghi BCO432, I will buy it. I have bought other 51mm baskets, but they get stuck in the machine when I remove the portafilter. (Maybe I need a new portafilter?)

baratza.com supplies all replacement parts for their grinders. There are thorough instructions and diagrams for making repairs yourself. Or, there is a flat repair fee of $45 if you are beyond warranty and want to send it in. A Baratza can last a lifetime if well-maintained, cleaned regularly, used correctly, with parts replaced if and as needed. I'm definitely on a budget, and yes, the Encore is more expensive than some other entry-level grinders, but... the others are "throw-aways" after their 1-yr warranty expires, as there are no replacement parts available for them (that I know of).

@scottwa

I suspect it is related to how large the motor and it's shaft has to be in order to have the appropriate power and last a long time. I've had mine a couple of years now and it does a fine job for my espresso machine. Law of diminishing returns... I can't imagine what a $4k machine does that this $100 machine does not do. Blows my mind that people spend that kind of money on making espresso at home JUST on a grinder. I've got this paired with a Mr. Coffee Espresso machine that they sent me to review that does pots of coffee, Kureig pods and shots, depending on what accessory you slide on. And it froths milk just fine. Once I got it dialed in as to me learning a bit about beans and the happy spot for the grinder I think it makes great espresso. My wife used to work as a barista and asks me to make her lattes "because you do it better". Works for me...

Question: We have a Keurig in which we use reusable K-cups. We currently have an old grinder that does not do a great job. Will whole beans grinded with this device make a real difference in the taste of the coffee? What setting (fine - course) do you recommend for my situation. Thank you.
@SeattleCoffeeGear
@SeattleCoffeeGear 7 ай бұрын
Hi there - you will likely see an improvement, but Keurigs are definitely designed with preground and sealed cups in mind, so you likely won't see a massive improvement to flavor. You'll want a medium fine setting like a drip coffee. If it turns out too bitter, try going a little coarser. I hope you find a solution for your coffee needs!

I've owned this about a year now. Static cling isn't too bad since the cup is metal and the unit is well grounded (three pronged plug)...but still get a little bit of grinds clinging to the side of the cup. I just swirl it around a bit before pouring the grounds into my Chemex and that helps dissipate the static and is somewhat therapeutic. It's easy to clean. Only complaint is the grind seems inconsistent from day to day. Using same technique every day with Chemex, brewing 640g of coffee takes anywhere from 4:00 to 4:45 which can be frustrating. Overall, it's an "ok" unit for the cost...kind of wish I spend a bit more for a better unit...but not sure what that would have been (I looked at Baratza but it seems to have quality issues of its own).

Keep in mind though that when it comes to ELECTRIC grinders, entry-level/espresso-capable models start ~$300....at least they did a while back. It's not just grinding smaller, it's grinding consistently (as Gail mentioned here). Most grinders can't do consistently! But as the saying goes in the espresso world, "Spend MORE on your grinder than you do your espresso machine." And that's true when we're talking about appliance-class machines. When you get into the prosumer class of equipment, that saying starts to fail, because you reach a point (of diminishing returns) where spending more money won't get you a much better grinder. Same for prosumer espresso machines. But you're still taking big bucks just for a grinder, I'd say at least $1K but preferably $1500. And although a $10K prosumer espresso machine -- and I'm talking about semi-automatic (manual, do EVERYTHING yourself) machines, not super-automatic "does it all for you" machines (including steaming milk) -- probably won't make better espresso than a $1500 prosumer machine, some people like to spend more for "art" reasons, as some of them ARE art (kind of like sculpture, if you will) -- but art that also happens to make espresso! ;-) Whatever, most people who are serious about their espresso -- but still make drip-coffee also -- buy TWO grinders (for several reasons): A "serious" (and $$$$) one exclusively for espresso, and another one ($$/$$$) for drip. And perhaps a $$ hand-grinder for French Press (or similar devices requiring a coarse grind). -- BR

have had this grinder since last year. we have cleaned it a few times, but our issue seems that it doesn't want to feed the hopper to grind the beans. It grinds but you don't get much to brew at a time. Any suggestions? I may purchase a different grinder next time.

You must have a dud. I've had this one for about a year and a half and it works great for what it is. I would replace it or see if you can figure out what's wrong.

there's one thing that has an issue that nobody is taking up in a review which I think I'm going to go make a video right now about In a how many scoops per cup or per ounces of water for coffee But it could be if you like watered down bean water, you put one scoop per cup I bought this death wish coffee that says three scoops for six and something or other ounces Which caused me to up to four tablespoons of beans per 15.9 oz of water or one bottle of aquafina...🙋 I was waiting for you to give your collective knowledge of years of drinking coffee as to how many scoops and you just went with what you read in a book... I was flabbergasted

Don't use scoops cause it vary if you have a fine grind (more dense) or coarse (less dense). Use weight of beans to water as a ratio. Somewhere in the 60-75g/L range but it depends on your brewing method for sure.

would you recommend the OXO grinder or the Baratza Encore grinder? We want to grind for expresso, a more fine grind.
@richardw2801

Neither are great for espresso, encore could be marginally better. But at that price point, get a hand grinder for espresso like the remi option O hand grinder or the Lido E-T grinder.

@@richardw2801I cannot believe how expensive these burr grinders are. I bought a simple expresso coffee maker at $250, and the Baratza grinder is going to cost the same amount $250. I could buy a Sears Craftsman lawnmover for the same amount as a grinder, and look how large and intricate that motor is compared to a coffee grinder that sits on the kitchen counter. Have we gone nuts? or should I say, has our minds turned to beans? Thanks for your tip. I'm gonna get a hand grinder and call it a coffee.

@@lostinmyspace4910 Updated my response, accidentally recommended a non espresso grinder. Yeah its expensive, just make sure you get a hand grinder that is good for espresso. Some more grinders: kinu M47 Phoenix and cheapest I would go is the tinemore chestnut C2.

how does one properly clean it? Since oil turns rancid, is then toxic and is cancer causing. (coffee beans have oil in them)
