He should have done a grind test on fine, med, coarse to compare. Just wide open coarse didn't help me. I have had the OXO grinder for about a year now. It's nice overall when compared to the Cuisinart. Like the Cuisinart, the OXO can grind 1 pound before overheating and stopping. The OXO is also very quiet. The big complaint with the OXO is the catch cup. It has a design defect causing the cup to vibrate out away from the grinder. This is a major complaint with owners of these units. Look at all the reviews. (I missed that before purchase) Mine snapped in when I first got it and was reviewing it, but the first time I ground beans it quit snapping in. Once in a while it will catch and stay but not often. This is a major design flaw that could be corrected but they refuse to fix it. As you grind you must constantly watch the cup and push it in otherwise it will slide forward and grounds will discharge in between the cup and the base. That's too bad because it makes a nice grinder not so nice. I store my grinder in an overhead cabinet and you can't leave the cup in place because it will slide and fall with every movement. As much as I like the OXO, I am looking for another grinder.

Wow. Nice to have your review. I 'm glad to read your review about the OXO cup vibrating out of its slot....that is a bummer. It appears the Baratza cup doesn't catch all the grinds; this video clearly shows coffee grinds left on the floor of the grinder...that's messy, but I favor it's coarse grind. Thanks for your review

What you should have done to get an accurate coffee retention was the weigh your beans first before you grind then weigh after (similar to espresso). You would have a more precise coffee output. One timer on one machine is not the same as another. weighing before and after is practically foolproof.

Very good comparison and Thank You. I have the Barista Encore. It does a very good job. I like it but it has to be brush cleaned thoroughly and blown out with compressed air after every use to ensure that the discharge chute is clear. If you do not do this the coffee in the very small and narrow discharge chute will clog up. If the chute is not clear the beans will not grind. The chute is not a straight down and out design it has a 90degree step turn and drop that is the problem.There are a good number of complaints about grind failure and this clogged chute is the main reason. By the way no one else in our household will use it because having to clean it as I described is a pain in the dupa for everyone else. I bought it and I am stuck with using and cleaning it. So if you do not want to clean it as I described buy something else.
@i.Gnarly2 жыл бұрын
This is very interesting. I notice the shoot has stuck stuff in it at times, so I used the provided wire brush (which I bent at the angle of the chute) to brush it out. I honestly clean it about once every six months and have NEVER got a grind failure, and this is my fourth year using the grinder.
@rebeccaraehl45342 жыл бұрын
As Garrett mentioned, compressed air and brush after every grind is completely overkill. I also clean mine only a couple times a year, and that's with it being used typically 2-3 times a day. If you find that's actually necessary for you to clean it after every grind, it might be worth checking with Baratza support.

That’s a concern of mine. I have the Capresso and it retains so much coffee in its little right-angle chute that I have to invert and dump the retained grind frequently. Sounds like the Baratza isn’t the answer.

I've this for over a year and grind beans daily, never run into this issue. Maybe if you're grinding really oily beans, but I don't see it.

It would take minutes of grinding to heat up those burrs even a little bit (which presumably are starting at room temperature), and the Oxo has a 30 second timer, so "hot burrs" appears to be a non-issue. Were we looking at the same piles of grounds when speaking of consistency? The grounds on the Oxo side looked FAR more consistent to me.

I have had the Oxo for a couple years now. We grind at setting 3.5 (near the fine end) setting for 30 seconds at a time (usually two batches), and I can say pretty confidently that the burrs don't heat up quickly.

I make cold coffee daily. I have an OXO, and the coarse grind looks just like the Encore. I've used a Baratza as well. I have no idea why yours turned out so fine and inconsistent. They both use the same 40mm conical burrs made in China. Either the OXO isn't adjusted correctly, or maybe someone is trying to plug the Baratza for a few bucks.

That oxo grind is considerably less consistent. The biggest particles are nearly the same size as the other, but also much more powdery.
@fredbloggs60802 жыл бұрын
This actually says nothing about which might have the best flavor for brewed coffee in a medium grind with automatic drip. Consistent grind size does not necessarily mean better tasting coffee for all people. It tends to give a narrower flavor profile, and less richness and complexity compared to a grind with more variation in particle size, assuming there's not a huge amount of fines, which may make it bitter.
@marcofeature2 жыл бұрын
It actually goes the other way around. A inconsistent grind is actually more likely to give you a narrower flavor profiles, especially for dripping coffee. It's because during the brewing process water channel will form close to the coarser grounds and result in uneven water flow rate. Most of the water will flow through those water channel and result in a narrower flavor profile that over extract on the coarser grounds. Instead, you want to have an more even grind so that the water will more evenly extract the full rich and complicated flavor from the whole coffee sets. If your coffee taste too bitter, it is an over extraction issue. You can try to increase your grind size, reduce your water temperature, or try to reduce your coffee-to-water ratio.
@fredbloggs60802 жыл бұрын
@@marcofeature That's interesting, that's the first time I heard discussion of coarser particles affecting water flow. I think it might also depend on the showerhead distribution in an automatic brewer as opposed to single spout. In my brewing it has been my experience that a grind with a mixture of sizes, up to a point, creates a more complex brew, as does a finer rather than coarser grind, again, up to the point that there is too much bitterness. Too little coffee will also, counterintuitively, cause bitterness because of over extraction. I suspect this some of the problems I'm having with brewing lately, last couple months, where I'm getting a heavier more bitter flavor regardless of the grind or the grinder, is either probably one of two things--the beans from the roaster I've been using are somehow different or differently processed for handled before they get them or they are slightly over roasting them. Or, As I seem to be having a similar issue to a different degree with a couple other coffees, perhaps the heating element of my coffee maker, which is several years old is deteriorating, affecting flavor. I'm going to get a new coffee maker. I've already spent several hundred dollars trying new grinders.

I think you shouldn't go back & re-watch Dan! I don't think u realize he said it was on the highest COARSE setting so it should be VERY coarse! So when u said it isn't as coarse, exactly & this is why it isn't as consistent lol..
