I have been married for 55 years and my Mother gave me that cookbook, the original Betty Crocker Cooky Book along with cookie sheets, etc. That is also the book my Mom used along with other cookie books.. My recipe for spritz out of that book copyright 1963 calls for 3 egg yolks not a whole egg. So I wonder if over the years they changed the recipe? I wanted a review of that cookie press, so thank you because I needed a new one. A little tip to get the spritz to stick to the pan if you think it is too warm. Take it to the sink, run some cold water over the bottom, dry and continue, that usually works without having to refrigerate the whole pan. Much faster too😉

Just ordered this after making a bunch of Christmas cookies using a vintage aluminum cookie press with a screw-type knob. It was hard on my hands and finicky to get consistently-sized cookies. I'm so looking forward to simply clicking a lever. p.s. Spritz crackers with sharp cheddar are the best!

I inherited one of those vintage ones but despised using it so it sat in its box for years. I felt obligated to keep it. Until, that is, one day, when I decided it was time to let go and I sold it at a rummage. BOY OH BOY WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE!!! My MIL had asked me a few times over the years about it (it was her mother's...she herself doesn't bake...can barely handle the presliced Pillsbury cookies...) and I always told a white lie. Well, haha, we moved closer to my in-laws due to aging/deteriorating health, so, um, the white lies aren't as easy to tell now. 😬 Btw, I have, use, and love my Wilton cookie press. It's probably 15 or so years old and going strong. Hope it lasts decades longer.

Hard to pick a favorite Christmas cookie, but I guess decorated cut out sugar cookies are my favorite just because of all the memories I have of making them as a kid. I also think of how hard it was to decide which one you wanted, even though they all tasted the same. 😅

First off, I have to apologize - I recommended Spritz cookies and the Mirro Cookie Press on another video that I watched before making my way to this one. I'm glad you've tried both the Spritz and a cookie press. I grew up eating and making Spritz cookies, only at Christmas, and used the tree, wreath, and a poinsettia disc (I don't think you have that one). Your hints and recommendations are excellent. Happiest of holidays upcoming (a year later). P. S. Vanilla is blasphemy! ;-)

Hi, excellent video and commentary. Very down to earth and honest. Thank you! I do not own a XOXO. I was given an original old Mirro Cookie Press 1960'ish from a neighbor who gave it to my Mom who never used it. I loved it and it still works. Over the last 7 years I tried newer versions, different brands but they failed in one way or another. I still have the original mirror recipes which used Shorting instead of butter which were very good when I used the Butter Flavored Crisco. I then found the Original Marcato Italian cookie press and have been using that with a simple Spritz recipe. I'm looking at the OXO to have another type of press with disks that have a more Christmas theme. Thanks again!

This press is definitely the best! Try the America’s test Kitchen spritz cookie recipe. It makes an incredibly tender cookie without any issues like having to chill the dough. I have two large sheets. Because these cookies don’t spread much, I can crowd thirty cookies at a time on one sheet. I press out the others on the other sheet while the first is baking. That way the dough does get too soft and warm. From mixing the dough until done. I can do 60 cookies in thirty minutes. One recipe of dough. Use a super thin spatula to get them off. Don’t start with butter that is too soft. You just be able to barely bend the stick or make an indent with your thumb.

Perfect timing! Thank you for your thorough review. It was so helpful. I was debating whether I should get the OXO; now I know! I’ve had my Betty Crocker Cookie Book since the early 70’s. Happy Holidays! 😀

I love this cookie press and have used it every holiday since I purchased it in the States 7 years ago. The Gingerbread Spritz Cookies make beautiful, professional looking gifts for teachers, friends and family and are always appreciated. My tip would be NOT to refrigerate the dough, unless you live in a very hot/humid climate as harder dough puts too much stress on the plastic casing - I've broken two this way. OXO have replaced one and covered postage to Australia which was great as it's become part of my annual holiday ritual.

@SophieintheSouth, I use the America’s Test Kitchen recipe and I’ve never once had to refrigerate my dough. I live in the Southern United States. It’s pretty hot here. Don’t ever make cookies when your butter is too soft. You just be able to barely bend the stick or indent your thump into the butter.
@katie7748

Agreed. I use the recipe on the side of the box my Wilton Cookie Press came in. Chilling the dough is a big no-no. Way too hard to work with. I made that mistake once and only once. Even living in the South now I won't chill Spritz dough.

Oh my . . . choosing one favorite? I love the taste and the nostalgia of cut out, frosted sugar cookies. As Susn commented, deciding which cookie to eat is part of the memory. The cookie we make most consistently is a peanut butter blossom. It's our "go-to" contribution when church or other organizations request home baked goods. BTW, they MUST be made with chocolate stars in the center. No pointy kisses allowed! Ha! Ha! Thanks for the review on the press. Thanks as well for sharing your tips - very helpful.. I wonder how many of us are now considering an OXO brand press! I've tried my mom's and my mother-in-law's press. There were some challenges!

I have that book (I'm on my second copy as my first disappeared somewhere between my mom and my aunt, lol). My favorite cookie would be a tie between the oatmeal molasses cookie from that book (it's in the historical cookies section) and the drop cookie recipe from that book just because it is so versatile (there are so many variations to that one recipe. It's brilliant!) As for the cookie press, I do want one, but it's on the "when I have time to bake for pleasure" list of kitchen gadgets. I haven't enough time to keep up with the normal cooking and baking (oh the joys of a multi allergy household, lol. Convenience foods mean "I made this on my last day off and froze it"). Cookies are a special occasion thing right now.

I have a vintage copy of the Cooky Book and a modern reprint, too--both found at thrift stores. It's such a feast for the eyes! I have a Williams-Sonoma spritz cookie kit which has sat in my cupboard for years and been used exactly once! It worked well, I think, it's just a bit of hassle. I am also pretty famous for my peppermint bark that I have been making for so many years. I also love OXO products and I have quite a few - their Y peeler, their salad spinner, just to name two. I have this cookie press & used it for the first time on Saturday with my granddaughter. I found it easy to use however the "teeth" didn't catch as we pushed the lever down and we had to push the top of the plunger down each time to get a cookie to come out. I came here to see if we were using it correctly & according to your video we are. Maybe I got a defective one and I should try to exchange it. It may be too late because I purchased it awhile ago but just took it out of the box to use it a few days ago. I make at least a dozen varieties of cookies to give to friends and family at the holidays. I've wanted to try the cookie press cookies for a long time but felt intimidated. My granddaughter however had no qualms about trying it! She jumped right in! Thank you for this informative video.

I have this press, and I only have to push on the knob about the first eight cookies to get it started. Your dough may be stiff. I use the spritz recipe from America’s test kitchen. It’s available online. This makes a really delicious, delicate cookie that is easy to push through. I use a super thin spatula to get them off. You can use different flavors. In the summer I had a milk chocolate chip in the middle of the flower disk. I also put a piece of pecan for the trunk on the Christmas tree cookie. The toasted nut gives that small cookie a slightly different taste than the ones I make using the snowflake disk.

I usually use the Betty Crocker spritz recipe when I make my spritz cookies. I use both a sawa 2000 and a mercado cookie press. I have a Pampered Chef gun type as well, which makes larger and a nice variety of discs, however, I couldn't get that press to work well at all. Oddly, I find the heart difficult for many presses. Yours looks better than any of my heart recipes. I general, I would recommend using the recipe in each press, but in fact, I use the Betty Crocker one. Sometimes, I spice it up for eggnog flavored or gingerbread spices is an easy fix.

As far as I can tell you used an un-greased cookie sheet yes? How does this work with parchment paper or maybe silicone slip mats? I have some old baking sheets that were probably non-stick at one time. 😅 how difficult was it to get the cookies to release from the pan? And would the cookie dough consistency or the surface make that more/less difficult? Just bought one of these and am going to try a simple sugar cookie batter. (I realize the latest comment f1 months old. I can only hope someone can answer since I’m late to the cookie party 😂
@cooking_the_books

Hi there! Yes, I use un-greased aluminum baking sheets for making spritz cookies. The unbacked cookies really need something to 'grip' onto when you're putting the dough through the press, so non-stick sheets or baking mats haven't really been successful for me (your mileage may vary). Yes, the consistency of the dough can make a difference. I've never tried a regular sugar cookie recipe with my press. I always use a recipe specifically for spritz cookies, such as the one from Betty Crocker's Cooky Book that I use in this video. If you bought an OXO press there should be a recipe included.

My favorite Christmas cookie is the pecan sandie cookie. I love my OXO Stainless Steel Mandolin. Definitely well made. I am going to check into the OXO Good Grips Cookie Press it looks like it is also well made and would be lots of fun to make cookies. I would love to win The Cooky Cookbook. Thank you for sharing the complete cookie recipe. 🎄🎄🎄😋😋😋😋

I agree, pecan sandies are delicious. We have an OXO mandolin, too! I have to be pretty careful with it, as I have definitely used it a little too enthusiastically and injured myself. 😂

Are the discs themselves also plastic? I bought a vintage cookie press which I love but have to ensure COMPLETE hand drying so rust doesn't accumulate. Booo I usually prefer all metal but not for the cookie press I guess. As far as favorite Christmas cookies, I would say Russian tea cakes, AKA snowball cookies. Love them! What is your absolute favorite?

The discs are made of stainless steel. I haven't heard of them rusting in reviews, but I also haven't had my press long enough to find out! 😂 Russan tea cakes, YUM. I have several favorites...date pinwheels, thumbprints, and a chocolate cookie my mom makes. I'm hoping to film a video on that last one. 😄

Is this us only or open to international shipping? I don't have a favorite cookie - in USA I always made sugar cookies with my family. In Germany, my friends and I made 3 different recipes from a German Christmas cookie book and shared them. In Finland i have made gingerbread cookies and Christmas tarts. For me it's less about what I'm baking and more the baking experience - music, decorations, movie, friends, cats, smells, etc.

This worked great last year, but now when pushing the depressor, it clicks and doesn't fully advance the dough. It seems like its not catching well internally. Anyone else have the same issue and found a solution? I'd like to make myself some cookies this year :-)

I think it’s time to retire my 1950’s Mirro cookie press. I won’t be able to part with it because it was my Mom’s, but the OXO one looks like it’s far superior!❤Also, they’re not my favorite to EAT, but I have very fond memories of making cookies with my best friend in high school. His Mom was going to a ‘Parents Without Partners’ potluck for divorcees and she made the critical mistake of asking us to make candy cane cookies. Well. We wound up making slug cookies. They tasted great but were actually pretty accurate renderings of garden slugs. Apparently people were able to see the warped sense of humor in two stupid teenagers and enjoyed them anyway! Slug cookies are now a family tradition at our house. My husband will eat any cookies he can get hold of. I wonder if Norm ever makes slug cookies?❤

@cooking_the_books

Oh no!! The dough should definitely be soft enough to go through the press but not so soft it’s super sticky. I’d try adding a little more flour, or popping into the first for just a little bit. Not too long if you do refrigerate it, because you don’t want it to harden up too much.

My mom would make buckeye candy for the holidays. Those were my favorite, though not a cookie. We moved to Texas and people (most people that are not from Ohio) wouldn't know what a buckey was whenever she would say she was going to make them. When they would ask, she loved replying, "Oh, it's a poisonus nut that grows all over the midwest. I'll give you some!" because she loved to see the reactions. LOL

I have a video request: would you be able to make a wassail? I believe that's a retro type recipe. I've never had one or made it. I'd be most grateful if you could. I have a male orange tabby named Wassail. The inspiration for the name actually came from the Claymation Christmas special. One of the scenes was about wassailing. Or spreading Christmas cheer. And drinking wassail. ❤💚

Hi Brenda! I made a spiced punch video last year that was sort of like a non alcoholic wassail. If you don't already follow her, definitely check out Melinda's video over at Unboxing Betty. She made a wassail recipe from the 1971 Betty Crocker Recipe Card Library!

It was the cookie press. My mother made these with the old style press. What a PAIN! Still it was my Christmas tradition. Read about this press, rated the best in a high end food magazine. Soooo easy. It’s my go to cookie for an event now. Why. You don’t have to rest the dough to hydrate it. The cookies don’t handle spread so you can pack them close. I use two large sheets. I can get 30 cookies or more depending on the disk on each sheet. From start to finish, 60 or more cookies inside of 30 minutes. That includes mixing the dough. I use the America’s test kitchen’s spritz cookie recipe, never have to chill the dough. No issues with the cookie sheet. Try a milk chocolate chip in the middle of the daisy. Try a piece of pecan as the stump on the Christmas tree or the step of the pumpkin, it can change the taste completely. On hot days at an outdoor event, I use a raisin hydrated in white rum as the center of a flower cookie. You need an extremely thin spatula to get these off the cookie sheets without breakage.
