Great video, Jonathan, thank you. I successfully dismantled, cleaned, and reassembled my spinner. A couple of comments that might help others: 1. In step one, you need to *rotate* the whole plastic ring by pushing sideways on the tabs, which are very tight. I found it necessary to place the unit upside down on the counter for stability and then turn it so as to work my way around the three tabs, pushing on each one in sequence until the ring began to turn. It took patience, repetition, and force. (Don't press down hard on the assembly; you don't want to add more friction! Same goes for when you reassemble the plunger.) 2. When removing the third plastic piece (about 2:40 in the video), I found I had to press down on the piece with my index finger while releasing the three tabs with the screwdriver. Otherwise, each loosened tab would pop back into place when I tried to release the next one. 3. There is a horizontal slot on the plunger just below the black cap. It is important to line the slot up with the locking slider when replacing the plunger; otherwise, you will not be able to lock the plunger in the depressed position. The very small screwdriver Jonathan uses is available as part of a set in a plastic case in most hardware stores. no joke, the salad spinner I received was assembled improperly and it looks like the tabs have already been worked over by somebody else's screwdriver so I think I got a kind of wonky one which is ok as I always wash things before first use, but I absolutely would not have gotten this working again without this video so THANK YOU, my salad spinner is clean and actually works now XD much appreciated, I was about to pull my hair out trying to fiddle with those tabs though LOL

I am not able to release these three all at the same time, even with keeping pressure on the piece to be released. any trick I did not pick up in the video?

I just noticed the problem, there is a slit in the plunger that needs to align with the bar lock or it will not lock. Not sure if I want to go through taking it apart again!

I have a really old Oxo spinner with the opaque white top. The bottom of the top piece is attached and I can't figure out for the life of me, how to get it off. The spinner still works great. I bet it is 20 years old!

Thanks so much Jonathon! I was about to throw my OXO in the trash when I found your video while searching online to buy a new spinner. The prices being asked were so shocking, I decided I’d have a go at following your instructions. I’m neither handy nor strong, and it took a few attempts, but I easily managed to dis-assemble and re-assemble the spinner (shining a torch under the plastic lid helped as a guide when re-aligning the components.) Handy tip: cleaning the gunge from the bottom of the double-walled plastic cup is nearly impossible. So I put the lid in my ultrasonic jewellery cleaner. It didn’t fit, but the basin was just deep enough to immerse the cup. The ultrasonic bubbles removed all the mould/algae and now the lid is sparkling clean and sterilised. Salad for dinner tonight!

Thanks Jonathan I would’ve never gotten it apart without your help. My experience was that if you have trouble moving the tabs, try a different tool. A different size or style of screwdriver, or knife made all the difference for me.

Thanks for your help - I just purchased this new salad spinner and when I used it - there was a piece of red cabbage in the lid mechanism and googled on how to take apart. I did use a screwdriver and found it hard to move the 3 tabs and injured my hand when it slipped. Was not as easy as it looked. That said the instructions were clear so thanks. I think they needed to design the bottom of the lid sealed so nothing could get in - would have been better in my opinion.

I used a hairdryer to speed up the drying. I found out as stated, that it's useful to keep rotating the screwdriver on all the tabs and they do suddenly pop out. Constant but not too hard pressure on ALL the tabs while switching.

I got it! Not easy, but I had to use 3 different screwdrivers. One small one to pop the first tab (not too difficult) and hold it down. While holding that one in position, I used a second small one to pop the second tab (not as easy). Then, while keeping both screwdrivers in place, I used a full-sized screwdriver to push on the central piece to keep the first two tabs down. Then I could pull the other two screwdrivers out and use the first small screwdriver to force down the third tab - really difficult! But after many tries, it finally worked.

I used three cables that are about 1mm thick. I looped them from the other end to pull on the plastic and release the tabs. Once you put it back together you can prevent water from going into the mechanism. Apply some plastic wrap to shield the mechanism from the water. Do this every time you use the spinner.

I just got this spinner today and as always I was giving it a thorough cleaning after I unboxed it. I had cleaned the colander part and the bowl and had submerged the top when I realized I needed to take it apart to clean it so the first video I pulled up began with "never submerge the lid". So I found this video..... now I realize I will probably never use it because I'll always wrestle with the "is it really worth using this thing knowing what I have to go through to clean it?" Now I'm wishing I hadn't gotten it. Seriously not worth all that. What were they thinking!

I appreciate the detailed disassembly instruction, but it's not necessary. After removing the plunger, as you do in step 1, you can now clean out the interior of the mechanism with a combination of diluted bleach, detergent and some brushing. Areas that cannot be reached manually can be completely cleaned using the fluids: spray bleach, like Tilex, works well. Just soak for a while and rinse with dish detergent, then water. Finish with a ride in the top shelf of your dishwasher. Crystal clean!

This is the most thorough video I've seen. Thanks! But also HELP! I got the first 3 tabs that release the black button/pusher and then the first small white piece with three tabs but I've been trying for 40 minutes to get the next three tabs pushed in to release the last part. I have mini files, mini screwdrivers, dental tools, sewing tools sculpting tools and various wooden sticks and coffee stirrers, I can get one pushed in but it pops back into place with the slightest movement. I did the soak, but ultimately needed to use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull that last part off as I was pushing in the tabs with a small screwdriver (kind used for glasses). Glad I pulled those parts apart because there was a lot of gunk on the inside of these parts too. Thanks again. This is one of those things where once you do it once, it is a lot easier the second time. After I disassembled and reassembled, I did it again just to get the hang of it to make sure I can do this on a regular basis

This spinner is not meant to be taken apart. Yes, you can with great effort as you prove. I worked hard to take apart - those tabs were not designed to come out except by great force - and felt proud to accomplish.Butt putting back together, getting those tabs BACK into those slots - where in the video you share you're" 6'4" and strong' - and then struggle. Nope. I did my best and the force I applied on the screwdriver wound up cracking off a piece of the plastic shell. Off to the trash..

Yeah after a while things need cleaning such as this. So much work. It should be something made to easy clean without doing this. Ugh. At least is clear you can see it. I guess the metal bowl version might not. I wonder if it had this mold issue ? They don't warn you of this. In my scrappy old effc apt it is hard to have to do this work surface or table arm. "Fool me once........" I've allowed Oxo to bamboozle me twice, an older large spinner and a new small one both have lids that allow tiny, tiny pieces of berries, arugula, etc. to sneak into the small open crevices. Not good if you want to avoid foodborne illness, so the lid must be fully disassembled for cleaning. Several KZbin videos, some better than others, show guys who are proud of their success because unlike me, they easily reassembled the many small parts and had the spinner whizzing again. After all these years Oxo's contraption is still ridiculous to maintain, and has left me with a 2-month-old second unusable spinner.

Don't fool yourself- those three white tabs aren't going to snap out. Trying too hard will result in your screwdriver slipping off and potentially gouging you or or table top.
