I’ve heard you say it a couple times now, you’re wrong about there being a penalty to mining oxylite. Natural oxylite tiles off gas at 50%. Yes, if you dig the tile the debris will be half the mass of the tile, but debris off gasses at 100%. So whether you dig it up or leave it in place, you will only ever get 50% of the mass of an oxylite tile off gassed as oxygen gas.

Two tips about the spom. First, if your water source is cool enough you can snake radiant pipes around the oxygen pumps at the bottom to keep the oxygen cooler. Second, when you are first starting up the spom (and dealing with the mixture of gases), it is much easier to just create and off shoot pipe from the one top hydrogen pump and pump everything out (some hydrogen will get out with everything else). Then, once all the other gases have cleared out and the oxygen and hydrogen pressures have become stable, then connect the hydrogen pump up to the hydrogen generators. It is similar to what you said in the video, but this way you do not have to repair the hydrogen generators, and you can create a fully enclosed spom and never have to break it open.

You should always snake the water pipes, because even if the water is 99C, the electrolyzer will output 99C hydrogen and oxygen too. So either it cools the air (if water is less than 70C) or it equalizes temperature.

I have personally gotten a lot of use from the algae terrariums. Once you have a sieve, they use very little water, eliminate a tiny amount of co2, and can produce a good supply of oxygen. Just don't lock them in airtight areas, they will not stop producing regardless of pressure, so I had one chamber that popped the eardrums of every dupe in the base when someone opened that door with 24kg per tile of oxygen on the other side. They are also best used with lights for even more oxygen. Are they ideal? Probably not. But they are useful in the right circumstances.

Probably the issue is that they create a lot of polluted water and needs to be manually treated. Sure, you could let it accumulate forever but youll run out of water. Oxyfern can be better but you can't make any more once the initial supply has been used.

The main issue with algae terraria is that literally nothing about them is convenient. They cause overpressure, require manual emptying, the polluted water offgasses, if you automatically water them they have tremendous difficulty filtering CO2, etc etc.

Pdirt form arbor trees are also a good option for sustainable oxygen production. I realize that this video is a year old and that back then we had fewer ways to sustainable get filtration medium, but even without filtration medium, you can clean polluted oxygen by cooling it down into a liquid and then heating it back up.

Not seeing anyone mention it so going to put in an addendum that makes power :) Instead of using the OR Gate (which ensures you run Hydrogen to keep it from getting backed up). Use a bridge as an overflow. So that way your SPOM Generators only run when power is needed. But if there's any excess Hydrogen - it gets re-routed. I personally like re-routing it to a Canister Filler -> 2 Hydrogen Generators (for main power grid) -> 1 Gas Reservoir (overfill in case). And set an automation to where if the reservoir starts getting filled, it notifies me. Your most important piece is to not let your Hydrogen in the SPOM get backed up (otherwise you'll start pumping it into your base). But Hydrogen is super useful.... so I'd rather re-route it and use it for something than burn it!

Hey, I just started playing ONI again after I failed like 5 colonies back in 2019. I found your channel really really helpful and enjoy watching every tutorial even when already knowing about it or not planning to build it because they are so informative. But one thing struck my mind with all the 6 oxygen pumps designs: Wouldn't these designs get inefficient at some point since they produce 4x888mg/s oxygen (3552) but are only able to pump 3000mg/s out, resulting in overpressure for the electrolyzers. Is it better to build 8 oxygen pumps (7.1 needed technically) or would this just be overkill? Also do I need to build a seperate ventilation line for each pair of pumps? I haven't found a way yet to merge these pumps together without the oxygen jamming at some point in time.
@GCFungus
@GCFungus 2 жыл бұрын
Well welcome back and thanks for watching - I hope they help get you much further in! As for the SPOM question, it actually doesn't matter. You are correct that the Full Rodriguez is limited by the pumps, but actually the half Rodriguez is limited by the electrolyzers (1776g/s O2 produced vs 2000g/s pumping). The reason it isn't an issue is that either limit is self regulating - i.e. if you have too many electrolyzers then they simply overpressure, and if you have too many gas pumps then the atmo sensors stop them from running some of the time. That means that the efficiency is always the same, regardless of which is the limiting factor, and the difference is simply the amount of oxygen that can be produced. Assuming it's being used for dupes then that is also self-regulating, as the oxygen consumed is only dependent on their number. E.g. if you had a full Rodriguez for 30 dupes, it would run pretty much all the time, but if you had two Rodriguezs then each would only run half the time.

I have two natural funnels at the bottom of my living area, separated by a wall of abyssallite(that I want to dig through someday). At the bottom of each there is a pump, activated by a not oxygen sensor attached to a filter gate. They output to three gas filters that filter out carbon dioxide, for my dusk cap darkroom and soda machines, natural gas, which is sent into the gas line for my gas range, and chlorine, which is pumped all the way to the chlorine vent. I have two gas pipe element sensors that, together with an AND gate, activate a carbon skimmer at the bottom of one funnel when both the darkroom and soda machine pipelines are backed up.

My 2 cents: 1) I usually add hydrogen loop for hydrogens, and route excess hydrogen to separate grid. This makes sure oxygen is always powered and you consume all excess hydrogen without waste. 2) I never built OR gate in this game as you can simply merge the wires directly and it will work the same ...
@louishermann7676
@louishermann7676 Жыл бұрын
Or gate and merged wires aren't identical and there are reasons to use a gate. For example, gates are one-way, if a machine is being run off one of your or gate inputs an or gate prevents the other input from triggering the machine where merged wires doesn't. Also there are times you might want to match the logic switching times. This comes up in switching power supplies. You split the logic signal, NOT one side and run them to two separate power shutoffs. The problem with this is that the not gate takes a tick to switch the signal, but the ungated line doesn't leading to power wire burnout. The solution is to run your ungated line through an or gate with a single input. Both logic lines now have a delay of 1 tick so they sync again.

did something similar to control excess hydrogen, but I used a gas element sensor in the vent pipe and a filter to delay it turning on for 5 seconds. I placed the sensor 3 tiles away from the pump to maximize the hydrogen stored in the pipes. Gives a little extra time incase something goes wrong. Also I tend to disconnect it completely just because the build running on its own amuses me
@puransu20
@puransu20 2 жыл бұрын
For the SPOM, can you have it so that the system never mixes wrong gases without automation, ie. by having it run forever with infinite storage to prevent pipe backups? I was planning on just putting excess hydrogen/oxygen into infinite storages if the generators don't burn enough or the vents are overpressured.
@GCFungus
@GCFungus 2 жыл бұрын
It depends by what you mean without automation. If both the oxygen and hydrogen always has somewhere to go (such as infinite storage) then you wouldn't need any automation to control overflow, which is the filter gate as I showed here. You would still need the atmo sensors to maintain the pressures though.

In my planetoid i found a geyser that has an average output of 1200g/s of brine at -10°C. I would like to use a desalinator and use it to run a spom but I don't know if the geyser will give me enough water or if the water might be too cold to be used for oxygen production, what do you think?
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
Yes that will work, and with an average output of 1200g/s you can supply oxygen for about 10.5 dupes. The issue will be the temperature, as the water output from the desalinator will freeze if below 0 degrees. Therefore I would recommend a liquid tepidizer to heat it before pumping. You can use a thermo sensor to control the tepidizer, then add a NOT gate linked to the pump (probably with an AND gate to a hydro sensor too).

Late comment, so hopefully you're still looking at these, but is the smart battery on the half Rodriquez not redundant? The atmo sensors would make sure if there is hydrogen to be used, it will be used, so there will never be a point when the smart battery will need to turn the hydrogen generators on. At least that's how my brain wrapped around it; I could be wrong.
@GCFungus
@GCFungus Жыл бұрын
Having thought carefully, I believe it is still needed. You are right that in most situations, not having the battery won't make a difference but there is a scenario where it will make a difference. This is when the battery would be requesting power but there is not excess - in this case the hydrogen in the pipes/generators will be used to refill the batteries even though there is no excess. If you wait for the excess in this case (without the battery), then you have potential machine downtime if the battery runs out. And if you're covering that shortfall with other generators, then it's more likely that they will fill the battery up, only for then the hydrogen generators to turn on and waste the excess with full batteries.

You can certainly use the hydrogen from a SPOM in an AETN, but the ratios don't match well. An AETN requires 10g/s of hydrogen, and a single electrolyzer will produce 111g/s if running all the time. You would still need to send the rest to generators or storage.

About the filtergates; I don't use them in my designs, especially since i learned that a green signal on an automation wire overwrites any red signal, so I feel an OR gate is not necessary. Can you explain a bit more about why you use the filtergate?
@GCFungus
@GCFungus 2 жыл бұрын
The idea of the filter gate is to ensure the Hydrogen line doesn't get backed up. So when the Hydrogen atmo sensor is green for too long it enables the generators to burn off the excess. If this were omitted then you could never store any Hydrogen. In this instance you are correct that the OR gate is not necessary and I do not personally use it in this set up. I included it as good practice and to potentially make the explanation clearer. The potential issue with not using OR gates is that the lines get merged together - so if one is green then both are green. If you wanted to use the same sensor for 2 purposes, then merging the lines without an OR, would mean both sensors would affect the 2nd input.

Any SPOM design does require some outside power to get started, but once the gas layers have settled it should be very reliably self-sufficient. Of course if power is drained from the same circuits as the generators then it can still require more power to get started again. Beyond that I can't diagnose an issue without more information. I think you've slightly misunderstood the way power systems work, and if you haven't seen it already then definitely check out the power systems tutorial bite: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2GcmJWteKh6qpo . It is the wires that have the power limit, not the matchines themselves. For a half Rodriguez, the power draw is over 1kW, so you need either a conductive wire or any type of heavi-watt wire (as I showed in the video). The full Rodriguez draws over 2kW, so you would need 2 lower power circuits, or one heavi-watt wire circuit.

There are a couple of ways to deal with cooling - either cool the SPOM room, cool the oxygen lines coming out, or cool the base where dupes are. In all cases I would recommend using a cooling loop with a steam turbine and thermo aquetuners - I covered this in the tutorial bite for cooling. You can build the machines out of gold amalgam to prevent them overheating and this required very little material. The full Rodriguez only requires 1150kg of gold amalgam, which is probably 2-3 natural tiles of digging.

6:03 simply using vents to distribute oxygen is NOT a sure method. It relies on you having only oxygen in any area where you have a vent. Otherwise a small packet of some other gas (say polluted oxygen for example) can cover the vent temporarily and allow the oxygen out. This is fine in small cases especially where you are not significantly overproducing oxygen, but can easily lead to massive overpressuring if left for a long term over multiple rooms and with excess O2 production. Making sure your vents are always at the top of rooms helps. The only gas in the game later than Oxygen is Hydrogen, and as long as your electrolyzer is filtered properly it's unlikely you will have hydrogen leaking into your base consistently. Removing hydrogen is as easy as ventilating the top of your base as well, although that can cause problems with Polluted Oxygen, which is the most likely culprit in the long run for gas over-pressurization. If you are unable to keep your base clear of Hydrogen and Polluted Oxygen, you'll need to add automation to your vents. You'll want an atmo sensor and a filter gate for each vent. The filter gate will see that there has been a low pressure packet over the atmo sensor for several consecutive seconds, allowing a green signal through to release the O2 (sensor is set low=green)
