Ozark Trail Baitcaster Quick Fix (2021)

After a frustrating hunt on the local cold and flooded banks in my area, which I should have recorded so I could share how many fishing areas are currently cut off, my new Ozark Trail Baitcaster decided that I wasn't treating it right and gave me a great backlash present and the same time gave me a great chance to show you how to do a quick fix if what happened to me, happens to you.

Incredible. By the way, this happens only when you loosen the tensioner all the way because it will make a gap. Be careful with light lures

Also this was happening to me as well i took a little line off so the spool wasnt as full and it stopped . Take it down bout a 1/8” under the edge of spool and it stopped happening to me i might have takin off 6-7 yds maybe , still have way more than ill use on the spool

I hear you on the mighty need for the shiny fishing do dads for sure. Be sure to check out some of the other comments as well. Some great tips. This combo know has braid and is my main bait caster when I am not trying to throw top water.

I wish my fix was as easy. Second cast in my yard and I didn't have the magnet set yet. Bird's next so bad I had to cut it out. Ran to Sportsman's Warehouse and snagged some 15lb Spider Wire braided line. Ran mag to 8 before trying again. Some tweaks on the resistance knob tension and mag and she's running smooth as silk now. Hitting the lake tomorrow with it, but just for backyard practice casting I'm pretty happy.

I would definitely recommend pulling out a good bit of line and cutting it off before starting. I feel like they put a little to much on there, at least for a beginner. I had 2 huge bird nest as well that I had to cut out before it got to that point. Now it is my #2 Baitcaster.

What brand of line, and lb test is on this reel? The going off the spool is the result of having too much line on the spool. Jus take some off. It is too close to the edge, and the memory lets it curl/slip into the space b/w the spool and reel frame.

Not exactly sure to be honest. It was the line that came on the reel. I have had a few other bird nest since this video and the line is thoroughly thinned out. One more good blowup and it will be time for an upgrade to some braid!

@@OntheRealFishing once you get the reel dialed in. Set the magnetic intensity to about #5. Hit the cast release, and let the line fall. Increase the spool friction (rt thumb screw on the reel body. After a couple times it should be snugged up jus enuff that the lure doesn't fall. Adjust the star drag by pulling the line out of the reel after cocking n reeling it in. The key to baitcast casting is to cast it side ways. ie.. the line should release from the tip of the rod atba 90 deg angle. This keeps constant tension on the line and allows it to reliease w/o the spool spinning faster than the line can follow thru the cast. (Hint.. also never cast into the wind). Hope this is clear as mud. 👍

Great advise! I just now started doing the angle on the cast and it has made a world of difference in cast distance. I had been setting the tension to where the bait would fall slowly. I will try setting it to where it just begins to not fall and see how that works. I have had my spool stop set around 7 or 8 as well.

Hello Joey! I had the same issue a few times with there being so little space between the spool and the reel’s eye. The easiest way I found was to do this to remove the spool and run it through from behind now that there is a little more room to work. Then replace the spool before you start pulling the line the rest of the way through the eyes on the rod.

I literally casted mine 2 times. And then the when I'd reel to set the clicker, it wouldn't. So I have to push down to cast, and push up the clicker to reel in the lure. Trying to fix that now but i don't really know what to fix!?!?

I went to grab mine and from what it sounds like there may be something broken or stuck in the handle side that triggers that to pop back up. I would take it back and exchange it if you are able.

The reason the line is able to get in there is spool brake knob is to loose. Should have no gap or side to side movement on the sides of the spool.

@@OntheRealFishing heck yeah. They seem to overfill these rods with crappy mono and expect people, especially beginners to figure it out. I personally only run enough line on my reels for about 40-60 feet. Bc if you backlash 40-60 feet of flouro it's easy to fix it back up instead of having to cut God knows how many yards off. It's all personal preference though.

Just don’t spool as much line on it. I wouldn’t put more than 15 pound line on it. (And I would definitely upgrade the line to a premium grade like Strength, Cajun etc)

Your not supposed to take it out if you force it out you will have a hard time getting it back in and then you will not have a spot for your lure to be resting on
