The Concierto de Aranjuez is a composition for classical guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Written in 1939, it is far and away Rodrigo's best-known work, and its success established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the twentieth century.

There are of course many recordings of this piece but without a doubt Narciso Yepes is far and away the finest artist of this piece of music….and this particular live performance might just be the best I’ve ever heard. I was in Spain some years ago in 2017 and a street performer was playing this outside a cafe and someone in the cafe asked out loud what it was. I told him the title was concierto de aranjuez and I told him to only look for a Narciso Yepes recording of it as no one else performed it better. They looked at me funny as they must have wondered what a diminutive brown skinned Asian could know about Spanish classical guitar music (I’m originally from Bangladesh) but live in NY. I don’t know why but this piece has always made me emotional ever since I heard it on WQXR many years ago in radio. I choke up and get a lump in my throat at the finale every time I hear this piece. Rodrigo might have only written this one memorable piece of music but what a masterpiece it is. Epic actually and so so beautiful.

I first heard this when I was about 13. I was learning piano and listening to concerts and fell upon this. I agree, when I hear this I feel so emotional about this. It is for me the most beautiful, romantic and at the same time sad piece of music. I never tire of listening to this ❤

Esta fue la primera interpretación del concierto que escuché cuando era joven y para mí es la mejor interpretación que he visto hasta el momento. Aunque también son muy dignas de considerar la de Pepe Romero y John William, para mí Narciso Yepes explota los colores y las posibilidades técnicas de la guitarra en una mayor gama que los otros dos. He escuchado interpretaciones que, a mi gusto, demuestran más sensibilidad y emoción por parte del ejecutante como las de Turibio Dos Santos, Andrés Segovia, Paco de Lucía. Sin embargo la sonoridad de la maravillosa y famosa guitarra de diez cuerdas de Yépez, así como su maestría técnica la hacen una interpretación muy buena. Repito, creo que sólo le falta más emoción.

I thought I new this concerto inside out, so far as a non professional musician could probably know it. I do prefer the 1st and 3rd movements mostly because they are so (understandably) eclipsed by the mighty and poinient 2nd, the Adagio. I know Aranjuez very well and used to live there. I go again whenever I can. Don Narciso's prediliction for the ten string guitar and his mastery of it took me completely by surprise. I have never heard one played before and was astonished and delighted.The tone and variety of pitch change, not to speak of the volume was astounding.. I will listen to this many times to come, just to remind me of what is possible with the best known guitar music we have. The harmonics at the end of the Adagio are superb and I always listen for them intently, perhaps too much so. If it is there I missed the high Fa (E) but the price ended quite quickly and went straight into the sprightly 3rd movement. I once saw old age male pensioners in a bar I know get up without a word and start dancing to it when It came on the radio in a quite stiff way, but they were old men! Now I am one myself, I must find out why they, as one, got up to dance in complete silence to the stately dance that makes up the 3rd movement. At the time I was charmed by it. Now I want to know. Another thing that intrigued me is that Yepes is a village famous locally for its cabernet sauvignon wine and quite near to Aranjuez. Yepes bread is very popular in Aranjuez. There must be a connection to Don Narciso's Apelido (surname). I call it as a hispanophile my "Pan, Vino and Narciso (not Marcelino) music! Every Spaniard over 40 must know the famous film of the orphan abandoned to a monastery where the monks grew to love him for his sweet and innocent nature. I love Spain and Aranjuez is my second home. I will be there this September. I am more at home there than in my English home. En Aranjuez, mi amor, Tu y yo.

This is Joaquin Rodrigo's best work, I think his only great work. I first heard this in Madrid in 1961 played on a six string guitar by Narciso Yepes and the Nacional Orchestra de Espana. I have two recordings by him and I just heard Pepe Romeros and the Danish National Orchestra. It is glorious.

Franchement, la vidéo aurait pu être bien meilleure, Yepes interprète ce concerto avec une guitare hors-normes, mais sons interprétation est incontestable !
