Higher voltage means you are drawing fewer amps for the same power. For example: To generate 500w of power, an 18v system needs to draw 500w divided by 18 volts = 27 amps approx. A 36 system would need to draw only half that ie. 14amps approx. This means your batteries have longer run time and longer over all lifespan.

Yes, that is true, however it doesn’t make sense for them to add another battery without increasing power.. Makita didn’t just lug on another battery so the user would have a more bulkier tool just to add another hour or two to its battery life.. If the same motor is running off 36v (if it even has the same motor) then the motor will have more gas so to speak. I am of course assuming as there are no direct and correlating reviews on these two. I did though, on the other hand, see two reviews where the 36v beat the 18v in cutting test when measured side by side... I have the 36 on the way and will definitely compare to my other recips, however I just can’t let go of the idea Makita would go to this trouble (also adding more weight to our tool) just so the damn batteries would run a little more cooler. It just doesn’t make “business sense”

Then why do DeWalt Flexvolt batteries give less runtime when used with a 60v max tool?

Regards from the Cornwall in the UK...Always enjoy your REAL reviews. Had good service from the brushed saw, this is a step on I would say. Can't see the point of the 36v machine if you don't have a power increase though, when you could just swap out the batteries. Heavier too. You guys deserve more subscribers. Cheers. Look forward to the next!

Can i just say that adding cutting compound ( rocol, trefolex, etc) when cutting steel will extend blade life, battery runtime and no doubt increase speed of cut. Im looking at grabbing one of these bad boys though! still undecided on which one!

The 36v Recip I got here in the U.S. doesn't have an adjustable shoe like the one in the vid.
@jonasausiura1657 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipzWmn-fnrdmoKs It appears the 36v is quicker to cut but the difference might not be noticeable since the time we are talking about here are milliseconds. If the recip is designed to run longer but at the same power output as the 18v, then the two batteries connected wouldnt turn the tool into a 36v tool, it would remain an 18v just with the batteries set up in parallel.
@OZToolTalk7 жыл бұрын
[Dwain] Makita definitely say its running at 36V. That doesn't ALWAYS mean more power, it depends on how the motor is configured of course. I've heard several other (trusted) sources that that the 18x2 does have more power in some tasks. But my testing didn't find it...
@jonasausiura1657 жыл бұрын
Thats interesting, I really dont quite know what to think of this 18 v 36v, theres a lot of conflicting info out there and Makita doesnt say much to make it clear. But yea, that makes sense what you are saying, if there is a power advantage, its probably nothing to brag about. Cheers, keep up posting great vids

The only reason I can think for using the dual battery tool is if you're working under a house and cannot easily get to extra batteries. Good for plumbers. Since the performance appears to be the same as the single battery tool, maybe the batteries are wired in parallel. That would make it a 18 volt tool with two batteries rather then a 36 volt tool. Hmm?? Could be deceptive advertising from my favorite tool company! Good work as always Dwain!
@OZToolTalk8 жыл бұрын
+Terry Goyan. I agree in terms of usage. I think the voltages ARE being added to 36V, but that doesn't mean that it will be drawing more power necessarily, it could pull less amps and give a very similar output (Watts).
@terrygoyan8 жыл бұрын
Hi Dwain. Greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area! It appears you're correct about the voltage. Just went onto the US Makita site and it says the two battery slide compound 18 X2 saw is 36 volts. Must be set up in series...I would still expect twice the run time over the single battery tool!

I bought this today (single battery brushless one), tried to cut a 40mm by 30mm steel tubing with 2.5mm thickness and it was VERY HARD. Was the material too thick for it or is there a certain technique? Also, it burred and made the included metal blade useless after managing to cut just one tubing.
@OZToolTalk3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emre. Cutting metal make take a bit of getting used to when first starting on a recip saw. A few points. As much as possible, you want 2-3 teeth in the thickness of the metal, so you're looking for a blade with decent TPI (teeth per inch) for 2.5mm steel. It's also worth noting that there are LARGE differences in the quality of blades out there. You want to reduce the 'bounce' as much as you can, by keeping the recip saw hard up against the material, and keeping the workpiece from moving.
@EmreYazgin3 жыл бұрын
@@OZToolTalk Thanks a lot! And I noticed people starting from the corner of a square tubing to cut. I think I went parallel to a bigger side..I will try your suggestions, thanks :)

I'm not suggesting you spend your time doing this but I would be curious to see a runtime test comparing the 36v to the 18v. does the 36v actually last twice as long or is it smarter to just have 2 batteries and the 18v and swap when they die. I'm also surprised the 36v doesn't have additional power.

Ive got one of the DJR187 saws, and have to say i love it. I also have the current Milwaukee Fuel and would find i would have to carry that and milwaukee batteries aswell because the older brushed Makita units were lets just say rather crap. I do think Makita missed the mark on the 18x2 however. I dont own one but have used it for a couple of hours. And it really doesnt seem to be much more powerful than the 18v And i personally would rather just carry another battery either in my pocket or bag or something. I have to say too, if you get a chance to get your hands on some of the Diablo carbide tipped recip blades and pair them with either of these they just chow through stuff likes its no tomorrow! Overall great review!

The djr360 would still be 4ah, the as it is the smaller battery so would be depleted first, the ah isnt added together to make 8 ah. as the battery's are connected in series to make 36v the ah says the same, if they were in parallel the voltage would stay as 18v but the ah would be added together to become 8ah
@OZToolTalk8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Stratton yeah, i would just trying to give users an idea of how the machine can't make use of the extra juice in the 5Ah. As the 18x2 doesn't give any extra power, I think/hope that it gives the equivalent of 8Ah @ 18V with these two batteries.

Thanks for the review. Speaking of the Makita 18Vx2 line, I would really like to see you do a review of a Makita 18Vx2 (36V / 40Vmax) lawn mower and compare it against the EGO 50.4V (56Vmax) lawn mower you tested here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZojQgWRtm9xjZqc Makita has two different widths of 18Vx2 lawn mowers: www.makita.com.au/products/category/lithium/lithium-ion-skins/18v-x-2 I would also like to see a review of the Makita DCV860 18Vx2 mobile dust extraction system. I really like the idea of using the same batteries for both regular power tools and gardening tools, so you don't have to invest in two different battery platforms, each with their own chargers and batteries. Li-ion batteries slowly dies from ageing whether or not you use them or not, especially when stored fully chargers and even worse if stored at high temperatures. So by having only one battery platform, you don't have two sets of batteries slowing dying, but just one, which makes it a lot cheaper.
@OZToolTalk8 жыл бұрын
+ITubeTooInc [Dwain] cheers. yeah I also like the idea of a single platform, but I think there are downsides to that as well. Unfortunately we probably won't be doing heaps of 18x2 gear, because our access to Makita is fairly limited. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for those units :)
