Tikka rifles are well known for European quality and accuracy. The Super Varmint is no exception and shot well with OSA 55gr Gamekings and my time-tested favourite - the Hornady 55gr VMAX. The action is beautiful and smooth and is an awesome rifle for anyone looking for a varmint / tactical type 223 bolt-action rifle.

Massive thank you Ozzie for the work & research you put into these reviews. Not only rifles ,but also ammo, gear & tutorials. Between you reviews &, advise & workmanship from Ethan at QGE I am fortunate enough to own two Tikka's (.223 & .270) and a Lithgow 101 in22lr. with their scopes and set ups, they are an absolute pleasure. Just need more time to get out to the farm. The thank you doesn't pay the bills, so there is a decent drink in it for you next week. Thanking you.

Thanks for this great review. I bought one this week. A 12 month old T3 super varmint, Hawke 2.5-10x56 scope, Caldwell bipod, T8 moderator, 2 mags and a case for £850 or 1655 Aus $. I can't fault it, first day shooting it, I had a 50mm 6 shot group at 120yds. Awesome rifle.

I love the Tikka, it is a robust and very precise shooting rifle. The only drawback I can think of is the magazine capacity, mind that a detachable magazine that it has is far superior to an internal magazine. It is a great rifle for what it is, a bolt action hunting rifle.

I have the .223 in the Hunter with a wood stock. 1 in 12 twist shooting those OSA 55gn Blitzking from cleavers. They are awesome. Love that TAP ammo, I get consistent 1/4" groups out of my super varmint 223. The .308 OSA ammo is outstanding in my ruger scout though, with more expensive rounds from Hornady and Remington getting 4" groups, but the OSA getting 0.5" and less sometimes. Was really happy to find ammo that worked so well in my gun, considering the scout is not known for its Moa accuracy

I'm glad you are happy with your Tikka, however, my results have been very different. I've watched some of your other great videos and recognize that you are one hell of a shot, way out of my class. Two of my rifles are the Tikka T3 Varmint .223 and the Winchester Model 70 270 with identical 4-16x42 scopes. I have no problem achieving sub-MOA with the Winchester but, on a good day, the Tikka is about 3 MOA. on a bad day it's more like 5 MOA. I've changed ammunition in the Tikka (all 55gr), switched scopes, no improvement. The Winchester action is superb (smooth and tight). The Tikka action is sloppy and I have feed failures to feed on some occasions unless I exert upward pressure on the magazine. I'm considering an "upgrade" from the Tikka to the Ruger American and putting some money back in the bank but feel bad about passing a lemon onto someone else. I certainly won't buy another Tikka.
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
Why haven't you taken it back? They guarantee MOA with Sako or Tikka ammo, so I wouldn't be accepting a 3-5 MOA Tikka, something is seriously wrong...

Well I don't do BS Phil, so if I say it is good, I honestly mean it... as for the ammo, grab the 55r OSA ammo, it's even cheaper than the Outback Ammo and shoots better in this rifle, so it's something I wouldn't be complaining about :)

Hmm interesting. Seems to prefer shorter (lighter weight projectiles) on the accuracy front. For the price I'd reckon you want a 1:8twist to shoot better with the heavy/longer projectiles. Still some heavy 75gr handloads would probably come up gold. Factory ammo doesn't tell the full story of a rifle. Thanks again Ozzie for another top review.

Your limited with long hand loads as the factory magazines are notoriously short and most just change the entire trigger guard so they can use AI mags, some modify the mag but it's a lot of fuckjng around.

I have had my T3 Varmint in .204 Ruger for 4-5 yrs now and it still shoots amazing!!! Close to 1000 rounds through it. I also was a huge Hornady guy and was shooting 32 gr vmax with great accuracy but recently switched to Federal Premium Nosler Ballistic Tip 40 gr and they're even more Accurate! Just going to see if they drop coyotes like the hornady did in a couple weeks. Awesome Rifles!!! Paid $1000 Canadian. Put a pivoting Harris bipod $139 ( well worth the extra money) and after trying many scopes it currently has a Sightron Siii FFP 6-24x50 Super fine 2 Moa Reticle $1600. If you want a cheaper scope I also really liked the bushnell 4.5-14x40 legend. If I was going to try another high end scope it would be a Nightforce. With no wind I can shoot 3.5in. Clay Skeets at 400 all day. With a 200 yrd zero. BUY THIS FUN...I mean gun... both words are appropriate.😁👍🤜🤛

It is interesting to compare the bolt actions coming out of Europe and the US. There seems to be a lot of pressure in the market here in the States to produce a budget hunting rifle, and that's what you see. There does not seem to be the appreciation for a well-crafted rifle, which is too bad. Here's an example; the Thompson Center Icon. A great sub-MOA shooter, and priced accordingly, that never sold well and is not made any more. The other tendency in the States is to buy a rifle and heavily customize it. Shooters here just love to tinker. I certainly would not buy a Tikka and replace the barrel stock and trigger like I might on a (e.g.) Savage. Except for fitting, a Tikka rifle is ready to go out of the box.
@ashleynicely1046
@ashleynicely1046 4 жыл бұрын
Savage rifles will shoot right up with Tikka's offerings with their factory barrels. There's no reason to replace their barrel or triggers except possibly personal preference, certainly not performance potential.

Great review thank you. Accuracy can not be faulted .Only negative thoughts are plastic magazine and light weight synthetic stock - gunsmith shops are full of replaced lightweight stocks Hard to pass a plastic on to future generations and suggest it might tell as story. Tikka T 3 X is an improvement on the hollow stock but the magazines are cheap and basic . I have a few and they any they are free to any home.

I'm really really surprised the 55 grain generally fared better than the heavier rounds in a 1/8" twist. I always thought the 1/8" would lose some accuracy using lighter rounds but doesn't seem to be the case, atleast not with Game-king and Vmax. I'm buying a Varmint this week but found it difficult to decided between 1/12" and 1/8". I wanted 1/8" because of the greater ammo versatility it gives me and guys at the range were saying go for the 1/8" but since I would 'mostly' use 55 grain rounds I was concerned I wouldn't get the same accuracy as I would in the 1/12 using 55. This vid just sold me on the 1/8. Cheers Oz.

hi mate, love your reviews, I am looking to get the Tikka CTRX .223 with 20" barrel. I want to whistle foxes so most within 150m but want something that will reach out to 300-400m for the fox running away that looks back! Do I have to worry about the 20" barrel vs 24"? Frankly I love the 20" but if it is going to restrict distance out to 300-300m I am wondering if I should wait till there is the 24" CTR in Australia. Also can you explain the 1/8 twist being better for heavy 60 grain ammo? I am thinking the 55 grain Hornady V Max will do the job out to 300 -400m range. Sorry got so many questions, I have a 22.Hornet, but not used a .223 calibre before, hoping that it will do the job, rather than 22.250 ( which I love, but is a bit of a cannon!) I basically want to point and shoot what I see, hate foxes getting away which has happened on occassion with the Hornet at longer ranges. I was tempted to go 22.250 because I know it is point and shoot, but dont like the noise + I am on other farmers properties and prefer to be a bit quieter cheers mate - Roger in the West

I have a t3 lite, strangely different ammo shoots to different point of impact on the horizontal plane. 55 gr FMJ Federal ammo groups 3/4 inch @ 100 yard 1.5 inches to the left, Remington 45 grain shoots half inch to the right.. I never knew a rifle could change its horizontal impact with a change of ammo.

I am leaning towards the 308, since I don't reload and the 308 has the most factory ammo available in ball to match ammo. I really like the 6mm and 7mm projectiles.

Could I make a suggestion please Ozzie for your reviews of Bolt Action Repeaters? The storage requirements here in Oz require that the Bolt be removed from the rifle and get stored separately locked from the rifle itself and the ammo. Most of us put the rifle in the safe, the bolt in the little top lockable compartment in the safe under separate lock and key, which means obviously you have to take the bolt out of the rifle to store it & yes you show removing and replacing the bolt with the toggle lever on the side of the receiver - which is great. The "thing" is - we don't like to leave the firing pin & it's spring, in the compressed / cocked position while in storage and lifting the bolt handle to remove the bolt does just that! Could you in future include the technique for de-cocking the bolt when it's OUT of the rifle for storage please and how to re-cock it again, when out of the rifle, after taking it out of storage, ready for replacing it in the rifle. Usually this can be found in the manual under the directions for disassembling the bolt for replacing firing pin and spring should you ever break one. It would just be a nice added little section in your reviews, for those of us who are interested in such trivialities. Other than that, enjoyed your review a lot!. Took my 2nd eldest lad in this week just gone to buy his first rifle - a Tikka T3 Hunter with blued action and fluted barrel (1:8 twist) however we are replacing the Hunter walnut stock with the Forest walnut stock, in order to gain the rollover comb cheek piece (Forest don't come with the lighter fluted barrel). It will wear a Burris 4.5-14x42 B Plex, Side Focus FF-E1 scope in for starters the 2 piece Tikka rings supplied with the rifle. Because this is a run out sale on the T3 since they want to stock the newer T3X models - Lad was able to buy the rifle for a sale price of $1080, which is well under what they were selling for until the newer T3X came along. Many of the changes for the T3X are to the synthetic stock so don't really affect the hunter/forest models as much. Will probably replace the plastic bolt shroud with a metal spare part one from a T3X. Might add a pickatinny single piece rail and Sako Optic rings or something later if the Tikka 2 piece rings aren't stable enough over time. Will try some of the ammo you recommended from this review and see how it shoots in due course. It's more a light weight carry around hunting rifle than a target / varmint model. Thanks again - enjoyed your video... Things have come a long ways in the 40 years I have been shooting - back in the day all we had was Nick Harvey's rifle reviews in Guns Magazine and Sporting Shooter which I used to collect. Nowadays having video reviews on KZbin is awesome. Keep up the good work.

Hi Ozzie great review as always mate, just a question, why did you buy the "super varmint" over the standard "varmint" considering the only differences are the rails worth $180 and the adjustable stock which you don't even seem to use??? Why spend the extra $450 or so??? I'm personally getting the varmint blued 24" and I can't wait. Thanks for the tip on the ammo btw I have heard very good things on vmax

Finally i found a channel what makes reviews of different finnish rifles, becouse im a big fan of finnish made guns. I myself own 2 Valmets, double barrel shotgun 412s and Erä .22 long rifle and 1 Sako .222 hunting rifle. I need to buy a bigger caliber rifle for moose hunting, is it Tikka or what don't know yet, but i think caliber is going to be .308, some people say 30-06 is better, especially for shooting target through the objects, but i quess .308 is enough.
@ozziereviews

Yes I have reviewed a few Sako/Tikka rifles and have a few more Sako reviews in particular coming up soon... 308 will do the job with the right ammo and shot placement.

Great review, not sure if you still have the rifle or not, however I shoot left handed (even though I am right handed). Can you remember or do you know if you could flip the adjustable cheek piece to the other side of the stock ? When I saw the adjuster to raise it up and down I was hoping that you could take it out and put it on the other side.

You can't go wrong with a 223 for the calibre as you'll find great bulk ammo specials and it's a good all-rounder for getting into shooting at the range. Mild recoil and cheapish to run and the calibre allows you to shoot easily out to a few hundred yards with an average setup.

Great review. Just curious how well the barrel of this rifle handles heat. Since it’s a varmint rifle I’m a little afraid it’s not designed for fast paced shooting. Any options...?
@mknight5159
@mknight5159 4 жыл бұрын
Huh? Thats why one would buy the Varmint model. So you have a thicker bull barrel that allows you to get more accurate shots down range before the barrel heats up and starts throwing them. A pencil barrel is only good for about 3 accurate shots. A bull barrel will get be you about 10 accurate shots before you have to let the barrel cool down. Barrel life on these Tikkas is stellar granted you look after them.

I’ve got a T3x Lite (.223) in a Boyd’s At One Stock. I’ve been a (C-5) quadriplegic for almost 30 years and I love the 'slicker than oiled grease' Bolt action it possesses. I just wish that Tikka offered a 10 round magazine for it. This has got to be one of the easiest actions to cycle, therefore it follows that naming the rifle a Super Varmint implies-to me-that users are probably going to be eradicating rodents and the like as quickly as possible. A rifle with such an excellent and potentially quickly cycled bolt action should have a higher capacity magazine. I hear that the controlled round fed, top dollar Tikka in .223 has a 10 round mag, but no luck in Canada...yet. Does anyone know differently about the availability of a 10 round mag for the Tikka Lite? Thanks for sharing this post.

From Canada great videos,have a question just getting in coyote hunting and smaller varmints ,would you recommend the 223 or 243 ,not into deer hunting ,was thinking the 223 but would value your opinion
@bruiser6479
@bruiser6479 2 жыл бұрын
I do a lot of fox shooting in Australia and use a .243 and a .204. The 223 would be a good choice due to the cheapness and ubiquity of the ammo. Having said that the .243 will hit a lot harder than the .223. For the size of the coyote, I would recommend the .243 if ammo price doesn’t bother you. It is a very versatile round. You could load heavier more solid projectiles if shooting small deer is in your future.

@@northernlight40 An excellent choice if you don’t mind me saying so. Coincidentally I have been contemplating getting a 22-250 super varminter as well. Driving around paddocks at night shooting foxes is legal and very popular here in Australia. I am considering setting the 22-250 as a dedicated thermal rifle for the longer shots on the foxes at night. How do you like what you’ve bought?
