Just a reminder for anyone who thinks these vocals are terrible: they're guide vocals. It's for Ozzy to feel out how to sing the song just right. He used to do this all of the time during his time in Sabbath, and probably still does it to this day. People have actually praised him for being able to figure out his guide vocals so quickly.

I know Don Airey said that you could play him anything and he’d come up with a vocal melody for it. Which is impressive considering the almost Prog like nature of songs like ‘Diary of a Madman’, ‘Air Dance’, and ‘The Writ’.

When Oz was at the HMV store doing a meet and greet I was the ONLY person who recognized Jake as I had seen bark at the moon on a Chanel 4 show the night before. When they do these type of events at record stores one of the perks that Jake got he was allowed to pick out CD's to keep for free. He's into a lot of progressive rock and Jazz. I pointed out some Al di meola stuff for him one gem in particular the three spirits live album with Al di Meola, John Mclaughlin and Paco De Lucia. Top bloke and out of Ozzy's guitarists he's the most underrated. I personally rate him over Zakk. At the time Oz was well off the rails (Crazy Train !!) still grieving over Randy.

That’s awesome. I feel like I hear a lot of Prog elements in both Randy and Jake’s guitar work. Both fans and detractors tend to underplay it, but Progressive Rock’s influence was massive.

This album always takes me back to such a magical time: the mid/early 80's. Amazing to think how popular hard rock/metal were at that time, and it was. The culture of Rock:MTV, those little round pins of band logos people would wear on jean jackets/leather jackets etc. I was just getting into it all , at about 12/13 yo. Really loved the 1983/84 era - so many great albums and music from the great bands: Def Leppard, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, DIO, etc.... Glad that was my time for coming up, I hate it for teens , now - but they don't really know much better.

@@tommyaldridge9933 no sense of melody? All these demos have almost all of the finished melody there. Did you mean to say he doesn't have any sense of.....Something else maybe? Hum or whistle any vocal part of an Ozzy song, that's the melody. The part that most people remember of a song, the melody. He's been pretty damn good at coming up with those most of his career.
@vonbass1300
@vonbass1300 3 жыл бұрын
@Tommy Aldridge no one is buying that you are really Tommy Aldrige, so stop the "I was there" stuff. And you are disagreeing with what Bob Daisley has said in a number of interviews about writing the words to fit in to the melodies Ozzy had come up when he heard the songs. Geezer said the same thing. Here I will prove my point, what we are listening too right here, with Ozzy mumbling crap off of the top of his head, Bob Daisley hadn't written the words to this song yet. Almost all of these words will be tossed out. Except for the Bark at the moon phrase that Bob said Ozzy already had. So, from here, after this melody was recorded, THEN Daisley could write the words that Ozzy would sing. It's how all of his long time lyric writers have said they wrote most of the stuff with him. If this was the Real Tommy Aldridge you wouldn't be acting like you knew how he had written his songs since this would have been the only time you were around to see him do this. And on a side note, Tommy Aldridge is one of my favorite drummers ever since I was a kid, I'm a bass player and was a Rudy Zarzo freak, so no one is believing you are Tommy.

Ozzy in his prime undebatably had an incredible and unique voice but was obviously surrounded by amazing talent through his whole carreer. Had his solo band been just 'average' after getting sacked from Sabbath, i wonder where he would be today. After all the stories you hear from the screwed over band members that kept Ozzy on the map, i cant even bare to see Sharron. She might have kept Ozzy going back in the day (or seen a cash cow to milk dry) but she's more machine than human now.... twisted and evil!

I hear little pieces of Close My Eyes Forever in You're No Different to Me.

Read what I said then see who is the stupid ass. "The Shadow of Randy's passing".....can be felt in this album. I am aware Jake played this album, again, if you understood what I said you would see who the ass is. I did not suggest nor allude to Randy having anything to do with this song. To make it easy for you; Randy's passing was sad for Ozzy, hence, the dark feel of this album is reflective of the dark period of Randy's passing. Ie; Randys death or "passing" cast a dark shadow over that period of time. Just for your information, dude.

These are simply demos with guide vocals. This is how song writing happens. You work out the melody first and then write the lyrics and record the professional version. Ozzy wouldn't want people to hear these other than executives from the record company to show progress. As a musician it's interesting but people hear his voice cracking or nonsensical lyrics and are going to cut on Ozzy. They don't know any better.

Yup. A lot of singers use vocal references and cues to get the melody and then write lyrics later. It's been done for years. Just as the band will use "dummy tracks" with the guitar as the drums and bass record. Nothing to suprise anyone who has has been in a recording band here.

Daisley said that Ozzy wrote the vocal melodies, which he affirmed were very important to the song. The sound of Ozzy's voice, note selection and phrasing. But like you said Ozzy didn't write the lyrics. Daisley would write the lyrics to fit the melodies Ozzy was singing. Geezer wrote the lyrics for Sabbath. No big deal. It's just disappointing as fans when we have to find out that someone tried to take credit for work he didn't do.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that Bob Daisley probably isn’t always accurate (he’s changed his story on the writing and meaning of ‘Suicide Solution’ between 1985 and now, for example). Don Airey also admits that while Bob did the bulk of the lyrical work, Ozzy did come up with stuff in that regard. It all boils down to whose coke and booze fueled flashbacks do you agree with more. That, and Sharon is an awful person who screwed over most of Ozzy’s bandmates in the 80s. The band should have stayed under ‘Blizzard of Ozz’, and I’ve always felt the first three or four albums were made by Blizzard of Ozz.

Ozzy's best guitarist post Randy!! He should have kept Jake E Lee or Brad Gillis his whole career!!!!
@jefffaust89
@jefffaust89 2 жыл бұрын
Neither one of them would of lasted anyways. Brad wanted to go back to Night Ranger who was just taking off and Jake I think got tired of Ozzy and the management plus him and Ozzy were never really friends or liked each other all that much. Zakk really was the only guitarist that did. Have heard stories about Even Randy getting pissed at Ozzy for his actions and his patients running thin. I think Randy was happy that he was going to be leaving after the Diary tour and be out of that drug and alcohol environment.

Funny how the band sounds tight on these demo takes and Ozzy is just mumbling through lyrics. Sound like he’s drug off his ass maybe he isn’t and just messing around. But heard during the making of this album in particular Ozzy was the most drunk drugged and out of the studio more than he was in it. While Jake, Bob and Tommy were rehearing.

Bark at the Moon is the only Ozzy Osbourne album on which the songwriting is credited entirely to Osbourne. However, guitarist Jake E. Lee maintains that he composed a significant amount of the album’s music but was cheated out of his writing and publishing claims by Osbourne’s wife and manager, Sharon.[9] Lee claims that after he had composed the songs and completed recording his parts in the studio, he was presented with a contract which stated that he would have no claim to any writing or publishing relating to the album. The contract also stated that Lee could not mention this publicly. Lee claims he signed the contract because he had no legal representation and because Sharon threatened to fire him and have another guitarist re-record his parts if he refused. WTF!

Jake's tone is much beefier here, drums sound better too, such a shame they recorded BATM like they did... The Ultimate Sin was better but i'd say both those records need a remaster, with Jake's wizardry finally in front...

Love Jake's guitar iff on Waiting for Darkness but hearing Don's keyboard part here without the riff over it, it's better IMO. There's a John Carpenter or Goblin vibe that gets lost with the riff on top.

drum mix sounded better on the demo than studio recording..though i love these albums, production wise, they coulda been better..Drums on this album and Ultimate sin sound like beating on paper and card board boxes for the final mix..when bands like Quiet Riot had a kickass studio sound the same year

I agree! Tommy Aldridge usually has great drum tone too and the buried him on the album. I didnt even realize it was him til i read the liner notes when i first bought BATM. Yes the mixes on the first few Ozzy albums could have been far better. The instruments were to muddled in the mix in many instances and the drums were not tight & sounding like cannons.

These are great but I maintain that Jake was so buried in the mix on both albums he did with Ozzy which is criminal. He is just a beast of a player. I still love the Ozzy albums with Jake but Badlands is where we really got to see the breadth of Jakes abilities. I know its an unpopular opinion but I dont care....Jake has always been my favorite guitarist Ozzy has played with. (Before the RR fanatics attack me....yes Randy was amazing and I am not interested in some pissing match with anyone over this subject....as a player myself.... I have alwsys preferred Jake)

Absolutely hate Spiders on the album, however, this rougher version is fantastic. I 'prefer' Randy, but Jake doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a true original and a ghifted writer alongside Daisley. It's too bad Sharon absolutely fucked him and ruined him.
