Each aircraft was probably best for their theater of operation. The Mustang was sleeker due to its v12 liquid cooled engine, and perfect for long range fighter cover from Britain. The Corsair was air cooled, which was critical for the Navy and Marines who could not lug around huge stores of liquid coolant throughout the Pacific Ocean. Both were tough, agile, and fast. I’m glad we had both.

When asked about the planes most dangerous to his plane the Japanese pilot said that the P-40 was very dangerous at low altitudes, The P-51 was dangerous at high altitude and the F4U was dangerous at any altitude. The pilot was Saburo Sakai and the book is "Samurai!"

I'd did some flying as a youngster and could watch these warbirds ALL DAY! The P-51 started life with the online Allison engine, then the only inline engine available to US manufacturers at that time. The plane was lend leased to the British who recognized the P-51s (designated the Apache) potential. They sent 5 to rolls royce to put in their supercharged inline merlin engine. The same engine used in the Supermarine Spitfire and it improved performance at mid and higher altitudes substantially. Top speed increased by 50 miles per hour as did rate of climb. The Mustang was born! The same engine was built in the states under license to Packard so P-51 rolled off the assembly line sporting the higher performance engine. When Luftwaffa Commander Goering saw Mustangs over Berlin, he said he knew the war was lost. Btw, if you haven't read Chuck Yeagers book about being a P-51 and test pilot later on, it's required reading for aviation enthusiasts!

Kelshando The Corsair will always be my most favorite warbird though, hands down! My uncle was in the Navy from 1948-1951, and he flew Stearmans, and then the SNJ, but right before he could graduate to the corsair, the Navy went to using the Panther, so needless to say he was pissed lol! He tried flying the Panther, but was like, to hell with these new-fangled jets so he retired when his 3 yrs were up, because that was pretty much his goal to get into the Corsair lol!

I think the P-38, P-51 and F4U-4 all were about the same in terms of top speed; the F4U-4 (the 4 bladed version with a slightly more powerful double wasp) had the best speed. The P-38 had the best service ceiling and a slightly better range than the F4U. The P-51D had the best range, and a ceiling between the F4U and P-38. The F4U's main draw was that it was able to dogfight and offer ground support while being as durable (if not more so) as a P-47. They each had their own purposes, and debating which one is "bestesterer" is of course silly - they're all amazing planes. I really wish the Flying Heritage Collection up by Seattle would get an F4U - they do a great job keeping all their stuff in flying condition.
@darkoneforce2

Used to have a game that involved flying our 1/72 WWII aircraft, and divying our neighborhood up into territories. So we (the 6 guys who played the game) had a lot of meetings to decide accepted stats on planes, since all sources didn't agree. Dragged in a lot of books from the library, compared sources and took votes on which stats we would use. I remember, from one of those many, many library books, that in post-war trials, with allied pilots at the controls, the Mustang was pitted against the Corsair. Above (or below -- I forget which now) 20,000 feet, the planes were considered a tie. On the other side of that altitude, the Corsair was considered superior. Both planes are fantastic. But only one of them is the better fighter -- according to the government that had them made, and the pilots that flew them in combat.

Wow! I love this video so much! It's about a Vought F4U Corsair racing against a North American P-51 Mustang! Fun Facts: the Vought F4U Corsair was built and manufactured from 1940 to 1953 with 13,581 planes built and served in World War II and the Korean War, the plane entered service with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps on December 28, 1941 and shot down 5,286 Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zeroes more than any other WWII fighter plane! The plane is 34 feet long, wingspan 41 feet wide, and stands 16 feet tall. It holds one pilot and has one 2,300 horsepower propeller engine with ether a 3-blade or 4-blade propeller and it's maximum speed is 470 miles per hour! The F4U Corsair can also fly to 41,900 feet up in the sky and fly 1,875 miles without refueling on the planes internal and external fuel tanks! The F4U Corsair also carries 4 or 6 machine guns with 631 rounds of bullets per gun, 8 missiles, and 4,000 pounds of bombs! The North American P-51 Mustang was built and manufactured from 1940 to 1948 with 15,000+ planes built and entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1941 and shot down 4,950 German planes like the Messerschmitt ME 262 first jet fighter plane! The North American P-51 Mustang is 32 feet long, wingspan 37 feet wide, and stands 13 feet tall. It holds on pilot and has one 1,720 horsepower propeller engine with a 4-blade propeller and it's maximum speed is 440 miles per hour! And the P-51 Mustang can also fly to 41,500 feet up in the sky and fly 1,650 miles without refueling on its internal and external fuel tanks. The planes also carries 6 machine guns with 650 rounds of bullets per gun, 10 missiles, and 1,000 pounds of bombs! And this air race they are doing reminds me of the Disney/Pixar movie Planes where Skipper Riley the Vought F4U Corsair was dogfighting Ripslinger the North American P-51 Mustang to save his friend Dusty Crophopper the Air Tractor AT-502 crop duster plane in the Wings Around the Globe air race! Also it would be like the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet racing against the Boeing F-15 Strike Eagle if they were jet fighter planes! Thanks!

Chance-Bought did make the most of the F4U Corsair, but many were manufactured by Goodyear!! The Chance-Bought spun a 3 blade prop while the 4 blades were used by Goodyear. The wings were designed in the familiar configuration because the prop was so big to handle the P&W Radial, without the bend the prop would strike the ground!!

tough call. Mustang has better aerodynamics, F4U has better thrust to weight ratio. Mustang can turn tighter than the F4U and it is lighter so it's less prone to stress fractures. Then again, F4U has better climb rate. Mustang has better high speed flight characteristics where as F4U has better low speed characteristics. I guess it's down to pilot skill and how you fight with it. I really can't say who comes out a winner.
@Teratornis
@Teratornis 10 жыл бұрын
The Corsair's Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp air-cooled radial engine could keep running with more damage than the Mustang's liquid-cooled V-1650 engine. If nothing else that made the F4U better for ground attack. Pilot skill is of course often the deciding factor, as we learned in The Right Stuff. Most of the victories from any given type came from the handful of most-skilled pilots flying it.
@fkerpants
@fkerpants 10 жыл бұрын
I was always under the impression that radial-engined planes could take more punishment, ergo in a real world scenario the Corsair would be better suited for combat. I've read about Thunderbolts that took hits to the engines and kept flying when P-51s just went down. Then again, not getting hit in the first place is what it's all about. Good thing these two birds were on the same side.

Jack Looney x-Navy guy who flew Wildcat,Hellcat and Corsair . Did mention the Corsairs High speed stall entered even near 300mph if you accelerated heavy Gs hard and fast. Also if you were slow and "poured it on" it would try to torque roll. Check out Jack Looney and ZAHNs Airport,N.Y. where I learned to fly. The Brits. worked hard on the Corsair because the Sea fire was pretty but suffered many failures in Navy use . Corsair was a VERY TUFF AEROPLANE so the Brits evolved their own shocks and technics for carrier landings which are used even now.

I love both planes but the Corsair was designed to do much more than run fighter escort for B-17's and B-24's. The Corsair did everything well. I would also disagree on throttle response and maneuverability as the Corsair was very agile too, even more so than the Mustang.

Should be the P-47 vs the F4U-4. Both were superior planes to the P-51. The Mustang always gets the glory because it was chrome and people think "Ooh, shiny!" Lmao.
@Ambaryerno
@Ambaryerno 10 жыл бұрын
You're half right. The F4U-4 certainly outperformed the Mustang at all altitudes, but unless you're talking the stripped-down P-47N and M, the Mustang was faster.
@rsattahip
@rsattahip 10 жыл бұрын
No the Mustang gets the glory because it had the range to escort bombers all the way from England to German and back. The P-47 could not come close and the Corsair could not do that either. Mustangs also accompanied B-29's over Japan, again because of their range. Still the P51 and Corsair were the best prop planes ever. The Corsair and P-47 could also take more battle damage and still fly since they had no radiator or cooling lines like the Merlin engine in the P-51 did.
@Ambaryerno
@Ambaryerno 10 жыл бұрын
Robin Sattahip Actually, the P-47N (which was more or less a stripped down, flying gas can) had an even longer range than the Mustang, and it was primarily 47N's that were flying the VLR escort missions against the Japanese mainland. You didn't see them in Europe because 1) they were needed even more in the Pacific (same reason the B-29 didn't fight in Europe; you just didn't need an aircraft with that sort of range, but in the Pacific you did) and 2) by the time the 47N appeared, most of the squadrons doing long-range escort in Europe had already been converted to the Mustang, so didn't need it. In the Pacific, however, Mustangs were in short supply, so the 47N was sent there.

Something I forgot to say. In my humble opinion, this is what aerial filming and photography is about. Quality, Excellence, Professionalism, the foundation of a unique and superior product. Breitling, this presentation says it all, and I'm not just talking about Aeroplanes. Breitling, if you keep presenting this quality of product, here, and on wrists, this fact is irrefutable. You audience, and profile, will remain worldwide, and keep growing. Disclaimer. NO, I have never had any connection to Breitling, in any way, shape or form, either historically, presently, or in the future,- more's the pity. I'm just a retired Royal Australian Air Force dude, who has, since the age of 6, breathed, eaten, smelled, tasted and slept AEROPLANES!. Final comment?. Oliver Twist said it all. Quote. >>---------------------------> Different planes, different theaters, different jobs and different enemies. No "one" plane is the best WWII fighter of the war. The skilled, experienced pilot with the right attitude, is the key to "the best" WWII plane. Case in point: Look at the Russians using our tossed out, weak, "crappy" P-39 Aircorbra. They ate Hitler's lunch with it! Wiki states, "The P-39 was used with great success by the Soviet Air Force, which scored the highest number of individual kills attributed to any U.S. fighter type". But read this: Worse plane to us Americans ever, was our loser crate called the flying barrel, the Brewster Buffalo - it was a flying joke....but not to the Finns! Wiki reports, "Finnish-modified Brewster Buffalos had the highest kill ratio of any combat plane in WWII." Makes us Yanks look kinda stupid with our video watch commercials. It seems that we're forgetting that, it's not what's under the hood, it's what's in the scrotum sack! Experience, skill, honor and balls trumps technology dependence.
@fbcpraise
@fbcpraise 9 жыл бұрын
surearrow "Technology dependence" is one factor that has given us air superiority in any theater of conflict we've been involved in. And I don't think Americans look stupid because of a Swiss watch commercial. I think our airmen have represented us well, in WWII and beyond.
@surearrow
@surearrow 9 жыл бұрын
fbcpraise There is no bigger supporter of our armed forces than I am. My entire family served, going back before WWI. My daughter served. I served, so get off your high horse and quit trying to alter my text! Read it! And the United States Military doesn't need ANYONE to defend it! ...and by the way, it's not our technology that makes us better! It's our training and our PILOTS that make us better, not our fancy planes! Look at what we had to contend with in the early part of WWII, Wildcat vs Zero then Korea, F-86 vs Mig-15, then Nam, F-4 vs. Mig 21. Our planes then were out classed, but we still kicked butt. Americans (not all) do look stupid at times! We're not all Captain America! Be real and honest! If the Air Cobra would have been all that we had during the conflict with Japan and Germany, then I bet you that P-39 would be flaming targets left and right - every hour! You know that too. What makes us look stupid is, that's OUR plane, and it really pisses me off when someone else uses our own stuff better than we did - when we both know we CAN be much better than that.
@fbcpraise
@fbcpraise 9 жыл бұрын
surearrow Well. First of all, I promise you that you know more about this subject than I do. Next, let me say thank you for your service. Sincerely. Now, I didn't get from your first post that you are a great supporter of our armed forces, so I wanted to disagree with you. No high horse here, just a guy who appreciates you and our other heroes. I don't think I was trying to alter your text. I still don't see that. I did go read the Wikipedia articles you mentioned, which I found very interesting. What I got from them wasn't that they flew our planes better than we did, but exactly what you said in your first sentence. They freely spoke of the weak points of these planes that made them less than ideal for us, and then told why they worked for the Soviets and the Finns. I think of how out-classed the Sherman tank was when fighting Panzers. But Marshall didn't buy tanks to fight other tanks. He wanted tanks that supported ground troops speedily over any terrain... the "fast break," if you will. And it paid off for us. So again, I think your first sentence is the key.
