This is the first time I’ve heard the original version of this song, and boy, it blows the Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow versions out of the water. When Arnold sings that the first cut is the deepest, there’s actual emotion in her voice that tells you how much she was affected by that first relationship. Crow and Stewart, meanwhile, sing it so blandly, as if they were telling you they like eating cereal in the morning. This is definitely the best version of this song by far.

Patricia Ann Cole ("P.P. Arnold") was only 20 -- and fresh out of a Los Angeles ghetto -- when she recorded this. It was written by a then-totally-unknown British man named Steven Demetre Georgiou -- who took on the stage name, "Cat Stevens" (and later renamed himself Yusuf Islam. He was just 19, even younger than Miss Arnold, who bought the song from him for £30. Life has many twists and turns.

I bought the movie for 1 dollar at the tijuana flea market. I bought it when the movie came out. I have watched it 100 times. Life in Mexico is so fucking lonely. Life in San Diego is worse. But when it comes to being lucky, I'm first. The first cut almost killed me. I am now dead. I watch the movie 7 days from every Sunday- to keep me alive. Good luck. The cast is the best ever cast. I used to play in a garage band with Tom Waits best firend Mark Ashmore who was a drummer for Mose Allison- and introduced me to 'Doc' Eric Hord, the guitarist on Mamas and the Papas albums...fuck, I could have been in the Wrecking Crew.

This is the first time I've heard P. P. Arnold's version of this heartbreaking beautiful song.

I saw Pat sing this just two years ago. She came to the Tivoli in Buckley. There was only about 50 people there. We stood at the front and cheered her. She d been unhappy prior to the show. I knew her pianist and we met for a drink before the show. She was nt happy about the turn out or the food she d been brought. But she still came down and smashed it . Fantastic.
