PW Botha was the first National Party leader who initiated the breakdown of Apartheid from 1983 onwards (not Mandela, not F.W. de Klerk). Many discriminatory laws were scrapped under his governance. Unfortunately, he was a victim also of a well-oiled propaganda and disinformation campaign by the Soviet-backed ANC and local and foreign leftists. He knew what would become of this country -- should the ANC take over. That is why he stood by his conviction NOT to negotiate with the them unless they denounced terrorism ("freedom struggle" is the romantic term we only hear about today). He knew that if he were to set Mandela free and unban the terrorist ANC UNCONDITIONALLY, this would create a false foundation for negotiations for South Africa's future. A universal principle to which most nations adhere to, applies here: any party that initiates negotiations with a terror group, automatically gives credibility to them and creates a precedent for future misdeeds against innocents. But certain naive government ministers such as the charismatic F.W. de Klerk and Pik Botha ignored this important principle and mounted pressure on Botha to start negotiations with the ANC. In fact, Botha had had discussions with Mandela who was still in jail for a failed coup plan and armed insurrection in the 60's, making it clear that, should he and those he represented, were willing to relinquish their violent, revolutionary ideology, they could engage in peaceful dialogue about the future. Unfortunately, Mandela stuck to his guns at that time. Pressure was mounting on Botha by the pro-negotiators inner circle (especially after he had had a mild stroke) until he eventually had had enough, and quit as president. When de Klerk took over and announced the UNCONDITIONAL unbanning of the ANC and its affiliate organisations on 10 Feb. 1990, what Botha had warned against, happened soon afterwards! The perception was created that his government had capitulated under terrorism and that the ANC was the real victor (even though de Klerk and Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize). This gave the ANC an enormous image boost locally and overnight gave the impression that they, the "liberators" were the only representative of blacks to be taken seriously, (despite many other moderate black leaders and organisations that had never resorted to terrorism in their fight against Apartheid). We all know what happened after 1994 - the ANC became so conceited with its stunning victory that it systematically lost touch with reality. And how do they regard F.W. de Klerk? They DESPISE him. A few years ago, during the 20 year anniversary of de Klerk's Rubicon speech in 1990 , the ANC only had poison to spit at this "loser", claiming that he deserved no credence for his part in the new political dispensation! Today this country is a total mess - economically and socially and the corrupt ex-terrorist leaders haven't given up on their Marxist ideologies. O-no -- they are pushing it like never before as the answer for the growing number of disillusioned black voters. Many extremist black leaders today regard Mandela as sell out - they would have liked to witness "justice"against whites (and weknow what thta would have been: revenge). We hear this kind of talk more and more, such as rthe EFF's Julius Malema having said that they are "...at least not calling for a genocide against whites - yet" PW Botha had prophetic insight to oppose this violent, Marxist organisation and justifiably suppressed their actions of violent intimidation in the townships to protect peaceful and moderate blacks. His "State of Emergency"during 1985-1986 was aimed to keep these terrorist thugs at bay in the black townships and restore peace there, but liberal foreign news media under the ANC's propagandistic influence, portrayed this as Botha's effort to "surpress" the liberation movement of blacks in general. De Klerk was a naive fool who thought he would be able to pacify the enemy and win over black voters to his (then) "New"National Party. Oh, how that backfired!

DougDelivers Contrary to what has been written about him, PW Botha was actually a reformist. In fact, it was under his administration that over 100 apartheid laws where scrapped, including the notorious pass laws and the Mixed Marriages Act. He was also the first white leader of South Africa to meet with Nelson Mandela in his office in Tuynhuis, his official residence in Cape Town, in 1989. Mandela himself said afterwards that 'there was no turning back'. FW de Klerk merely took Botha's reforms further by unbanning the ANC after Botha's resignation in 1989. Botha believed in the rule of law, and would not have allowed South Africa to slip into a gradual state of anarchy as is clearly apparent in today's often brutal culture of crime, rape, murder and corruption. PW Botha was a great man, and history will one day judge him kindly.

Christian de Ravin It is curious. It should here in Catalonia is like "Botha was a ferocious apartheid supporter, he abolished lots of apartheid laws and...." wtf? Anyway, I support apartheid as HE promoted it, because it was the application of the original concept, that is; "Separate but Equal" it is impossible to control a country with 11 African ethnicities. In their homelands which were to become independent under protectorate of SA they had exactly the SAME rights that White South African had in their Homeland , their independent country.
@DougDelivers
@DougDelivers 9 жыл бұрын
Christian de Ravin One man one vote is at the very core of true democracy. Whether it puts the smartest and/or best educated people in charge of a nation's future direction is irrelevant. The voting majority deserves to call the shots ... period. Your previous comments reveal the thinly veiled racism at the heart of your poorly reasoned rationalizations. Your attempts at revisionism are pathetic and utterly at odds with the historical record. Dan van der Vat nailed it in a 2006 Guardian obit, writing that Botha was "one of the most evil men of the 20th century, committed to state terrorism, war and murder to thwart black majority rule". Botha did NOT pave the way for the end of state-sponsored segregation and oppression of the black majority; because of him, thousands of black South Africans died unnecessarily. Botha directly ordered deaths of some, and encouraged trigger-happy police to gun down many others. He even green-lighted research into chemical and biological agents that would affect only black people, as discovered by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The fact that this despicable human being refused to appear before that commission tells you everything you need to know. Under Botha, South Africa became a pariah in the world community. His reputation will never be rehabilitated, nor should it be - despite the clumsy, desperate efforts of apartheid apologists within South Africa and elsewhere.
