P0442 Small EVAP Leak Hyundai Elantra "Easy Fix"

Diagnose check engine light Hyundai Elantra with stored diagnostic trouble code p0442 small evaporative emission system leak.

1. Monitor the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage either with the scanner or using at voltmeter (Green/Orange wire pin 33 at the Electronic Control Module). The fuel tank pressure sensor should have approximately 5 volts on the Red wire (pin 44) and a ground on the Blue/Black wire. With atmospheric pressure on the system, the voltage on the Green/Orange wire should be near 2.5 volts.
2. Next ground the canister close valve Blue/Black wire, this should close the valve and seal the system.
3. With the engine idling, locate the purge control valve (under the throttle body, inline of the vacuum hose) and tap the Yellow/Orange wire to ground while watching the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage. Bring the voltage down to near 1 volt and stop tapping the ground. The voltage should hold if there are no leaks. If the voltage starts to rise pinch off the hose between the canister and the fuel tank. If the voltage stops rising the leak is in the canister, canister close valve or hoses.

I have code P0456. (Evap very small leak) I've tried the gas cap, vapor canister, and purge value. Any other things I could check? Do I need a smoke machine to test hoses? This is extremely annoying trying to fix.

So I replaced evap cells, whole exhaust, gas cap, and o2 sense still the emissions code is still showing. Any ideas???

If my car isn't have trouble maintaining fuel, but has starting issues every time at fuel fill-up... would I need to replace the purge valve under the hood or the vent valve underneath the car? I already bought a new gas cap.

@@gadgets123 Replacing the purge valve worked. The Hyundai dealership wanted to charge me $300, after initially quoting me around $60-70. So I left. I took it to a car repair shop (that had good ratings) and they wanted to charge me $500... saying that I probably need the charcoal canister replaced and have the lines flushed. As I was walking out the door, they told me that I probably didn't need that stuff, considering my gas tank wouldn't restrict me from putting in the gas. If you can still put in gas, you probably do not need the charcoal canister replaced. My mom had a friend in her apartment complex who works on cars all the time. So I paid him $30 to install the OEM purge value that I got on Amazon.com. I haven't had any issues with it since. I would only purchase the OEM part.. it cost me around $30 + shipping. The check engine light is still on, but the car runs perfectly. I may need to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes like I was told, so it can reboot and get rid of that indicator light. At first I thought my issue was due to getting bad gasoline in the tank, since the issue first started after I put gasoline in the tank from a gas station that I do not normally go to. With my particular Hyundai, the purge valve is under the hood near the very back. It's hard to get to. You could probably replace it yourself by finding a tutorial on KZbin, but if you don't want to chance it, just find someone who is mechanically savvy and save yourself some money.

I’ve got an 06 sonata with the same code. It’s weird. I bought new gas cap, if I top off tank I get no codes until the gas is about 250 miles remaining or between 3/4 to a half a tank. Today I got gas so I don’t get the light on. I pumped a few cents over from where nozzle stopped and noticed gas leaking next to the filler area just near my tire well. I’m lost.

i believe your vapor cannister is in the rear behind the wheel well. if you topped it up too much you can get fuel coming out the cannister vent

I have a 08 Hyundai sonata with evap codes and a check engine light. I re recently they said they wanted 2000 dollars to fix in debating.

If an engine light comes on that easily the system is way too sensitive. These over engineered tolerances of what’s acceptable is ridiculous. I miss the days no tpms, if the pressure is down two pounds it’s like a Christmas tree on your dash.
