This video saved me $$$. I had the same exact issue P0455 Large Evap Leak. Bought a new gas cap, cleared the codes and checked all the evap lines. I eventually gave up and brought it to a mechanic to find the "large" leak. The mechanical ran a smoke test, exactly as you had done in your video and they couldn't find the leak. When they activated the purge valve and vent solenoid they both clicked. He noticed the purge valve looked new and asked me if I had replaced it, which I did myself two years ago with an aftermarket purge valve. He looked puzzled and said, "that can't be it then." He cleared the codes and told me to see if it would pop up again. 50 miles later the light popped up to my great frustration. I scoured the internet and your video was the only one that actually tried to address the problem. Totally worth every second of the 2 hours I reviewed. Bought an original Hyundai Bosch purge valve for $30 and installed the new part. It's been 500 miles later and the code hasn't popped up. Huge kudos to you ScannerDanner!

Scanner Danner, Thank you for providing this 3 part video. My Mother in law who is living on a fixed income, came to me with a check engine light on her 2005 Hyundai Tucson 2.7 liter. I checked it with a code reader and found code P0455. No other codes. I replaced the vent valve ($20.00) and the purge valve ($19.00). reset the computer and a few days later the light came back on. I could not find any leaks and ended up ordering another Purge valve ($26.00). a few days after replacing it the P0455 code came back. I was lost and had no idea what to do next. That's when I found your video. I ordered the factory part ($79.00). The light has not come back on. Your a life saver, Thank you for saving my mother in law what would have been a very expensive repair. Retired Navy SCPO Curtis Long

I once had a mil with a codepo449 (I think) on a 09 Silverado. He changed a purge valve, and no fix! I got into it, and tested the vent valve, and it was intermittent, so we replaced that!! The money light came right back on, so I went back to read the code. As I was looking at some live data (smaller handheld code reader, with some live data) I witnessed a purge. As it stopped, the tank pressure reading didn’t return back to absolute zero! I removed the cap, and still not to zero. It was just not there, like 6in of water, or the like! The pressure and vacuum did respond, and reacted correctly, but just out of range on zero! I replaced the tank pressure sensor, which fixed the problem! The problem was the sensor zeroing! It was something like -250 in of water, to+250 in of water, in a range!! Since the sensor didn’t return to zero, it was a tick too much positive pressure, looking like the system didn’t vent properly. It responded to tests, and to the reaction of the working system, it just didn’t show zero, when it was zero. It was just a touch positive, at zero, telling my system that it didn’t properly vent!! Since the sensor was only positive to 6 in of water, it didn’t show out of range, and it did act appropriately to vacuum and pressure. My point is that just what Danner suggested!! New don’t mean working!! Or, working don’t mean working CORRECTLY!! It’s crucial to know what the info means, and what info is looked at, and what the info needs to be! In my case, the sensor reacted to pressure, it reacted to vacuum, but it was not in a recognizable range, so the pcm could understand its meaning!!

I Followed the instructions on testing the purge valve , even though the purge valve is energized you need to rev up the engine to 1500 to 2000 rpm and pinch off the hose leading to the canister to show vacuum on the gauge . After doing this I confirmed that I had a bad purge valve . A OEM purge valve cost $110.00 + tax .

After watching this through part 2, I feel your frustration about shitty aftermarket parts. I did a complete brake job with hydraulics on a 1998 Accord EX back in 2017, using aftermarket (Centric) parts. A few months later she called and stated the red brake warning light was on on the dash, and that the fluid was very low, and there was a puddle under the driver's front area. I had her get it towed in due to safety concerns, and determined that the master cylinder sprung a leak. No problem, just warranty the master cylinder...... 4 times total over 18 months! I even paid for a different aftermarket brand on the last one, but it only lasted 2 or 3 months! All of them leaked between the reservoir and main body of the master cylinder in the same spot!! I bought one from Honda, put it on, and there has never been any more problem since. A few months later, the starter went out. She demanded an original Honda starter, even though it cost over double an aftermarket part. This is just one of dozens of crappy parts I've been frustrated by over the past 10 or so years! In some cases, the situation is reversed! I no longer use Motorcraft starters or A/C compressors due to early failures! This is only one of many experiences where crap parts have made me consider going into the ministry! ;)

Hey Paul, my parents had a 2008 elantra, bought it brand new (was my first car!). Just last year it had the large evap leak code and 3 garages smoke tested it and they all said there's no leak. After changing purge and vent valves, and not being able to clear that code, just last week, they traded the car in at the dealer. Seems as though you're having the same issue... A "large leak" where there isn't even a small one. Hope it's nothing nefarious on Hyundai's part... That one simple code makes the car unpassable in many states, requiring you to buy another car. Looking forward to what you find as the cause!

21:11 If there's a check valve in the filler neck, that's crazy. If there's any pressure in the enclosed system and you start to top off the tank with fuel, that pressure will immediately vent up the filler neck when you start pouring fuel. IRL that will only occur if you are topping off the tank without having just driven the car (to give the enclosed system an opportunity to reduce any pressure (due to thermal volumetric expansion of the fuel) to a slight vacuum via the emissions system). But if you're at home, decanting fuel into the filler from a gas can, you could get a bit of a fuel blow-back from the air rushing out of the tank.

Try blowing air through the purge valve, should not be able to. Is it a BWD brand? I think Eric O. and Ivan call it broke when delivered. Sometimes when those stick open it can cause an extended crank time after refueling.

@@E85_STI I have a Honda evap video that will help you. The vent valve will be near or on the canister and will have a hose that extends or dumps into the frame or possibly a filter. That is the fresh air inlet and that valve is normally open, so you have to electrically close it or pinch off that air inlet hose anytime your doing a smoke test. So all that smoke your seeing could be dumping out of the frame area from that vent

So what are the negative impacts of a P0455 code? I have this code come up every few months or so on my 2009 Jeep Wrangler. I just clear it or let it go away and it doesn't come back until next time. I can't really tell any difference when the code is on or not. Had this going on since I owned it, for past 9 years.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 жыл бұрын
9 years with the same code? I think you have your answer as far as what the impacts are :-) The only real dangers with an EVAP leak is if you park in a garage and you have fuel vapors filling that space. There can also be an adverse affect on gas mileage if the purge valve is sticking open, other than that, there really are no other adverse affects from an EVAP leak

@@ScannerDanner I park it in the garage, but never noticed any gas smell. I just took a quick look at the purge valve and the tab it is mounted on is broken, and the valve is just kind of hanging by the hoses. Not sure what happened there, but probably worth a more thorough look.

This comment may be moot since you say no more evap leak tests. But I do maybe 10 evap leaks a month, for the past 5 years, and yes, almost every Hyundai doesn't "have a leak". I've found a couple tips over time. One, testing the system under a vacuum can better check a leaky cap. Done this by blocking vent valve, then engine running, back probe purge valve control side until max vacuum is shown on data pid, then unplug purge valve and quickly shutoff engine. Watch vacuum bleed-up rate. Also, something to note, a purge valve that fails to open, can set a large evap leak because the computer never sees system go into vacuum and translates that as there being a large leak.

Hi Paul: Question I have here is: If P0455 code set ONLY after you cleared the ECM codes and the system has to run the evap monitor test, usually the problem is in the vent valve, since the vent valve never need to closed until the PCM runs the evap monitor test and commanded the valve closed for leak check. Also, once the evap monitor leak test is completed and passed, will the PCM run the leak test monitor anymore? any advises? thanks
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 13 күн бұрын
Yes, it doesn't just run it once and then not again after it passes. This test is run on every drive cycle if the conditions are right for it to run. Tank level has a factor in the leak test as well as many other variables
