FlyInside is an amazing tool that lets you use your Virtual Reality headsets from Oculus or HTC within FSX and P3D. Using some vodoo magic called Asynchronous Timewarp the software even overcomes the frame rate limitations of those sims to deliver over 90 frames per second within the headset.
Froogle takes a look.

Been using fly-inside for the last few weeks on the Vive. Tried the demo, then after 12 or so 15 minute flights, I decided I had to buy it.What a you-tube video doesn't get across, is the feeling of depth and scale that you experience in VR. When you look out over the wing, it looks like it is part of your plane and completely separate from the ground when compared to a 2d device. In addition, the feeling of depth is so good, that I can tell my height above ground just by looking at it. Also, as Frugal mentions, because you are in the plane for all intents and purposes, you feel everything the plane is doing. Normally if I'm doing a standard rate turn on a 2d display I have to keep an eye out on the altimeter to see if I'm making a level turn. In VR there is no need to do this as you can instantly feel when you start to lose altitude.Although the resolution is a lot lower than the 4k resolution I'm used to flying on a 2d display, I will never go back. The feeling of flight and of being above the ground is unsurpassed!

Fantastic review! Not sure if my volley of questions on your May 29 upload prompted this but it is very much appreciated. I understand you not wanting to answer questions from non subscribers so liked and subbed. All of my questions answered thanks. Off to buy my PC and then stand in line for the Oculus.

Thanks F for another great, informative vid. I'm upgrading my FSX rig right now (literally, new core i7 machine after 6 yrs!) and my Rift arrives later today. What I like about your video is your enthusiastic response to the sensation and immersion of this technology, which other reviewers are also expressing about FlyInside. I've been running 3 monitors for outside view + 1 dedicated for panel + TrackIR, but I'm counting on this taking it to the next level. We've waited a long time for this technology. Cheers.

Hi, Froogle! Great video. I just got the Vive and Fly Inside FSX, and am just as impressed. My hope is that there will other videos that reveal how to get the most out of the interface between FSX (with its trade offs) and Fly Inside FSX (with its trade offs). When you consider add ons multiplayer, etc., the number of possible ways of using these two products together becomes huge. I will be happily tinkering for YEARS.

Awesome video, thanks Froogle. The first time I flew with fly inside, I knew I could never go back. There's another neat trick you can do if you navigate with an iPad. Simply use Lonely Screen to mirror the iPad to your display, then you can bring it into the cockpit in Fly Inside. Plan G is also another useful free tool you can use virtually inside the cockpit. Look forward to more videos like this..

Ive just got OR, plus Flyinside. first impression - WOW. erm, then more WOW . So worth the new build PC for it. The thing that really took my breath away was flying past clouds!!! For the first time ever you get a sense of the speed you're doing up there. Landing helicopters now becomes more instinctive. I'm totally sold. And when they bring out version 2 with HD graphics...... just take my money. Great video Froogle

Thanks for this video Froogle. I'm very interested in purchasing a VR headset for simming and appreciate this second take video on VR. I'm also a developer like yourself so the technical challenges of VR are a hurdle for many developers. I'm directly working on Hololens and GearVR projects for my work, and I've had the opportunity to see more of what VR and AR can bring to enrich an experience or create a whole new one. Again, I'm glad that you've gone back and had another look at VR with Fly Inside product. I'm saving up for a Rift and really value the feedback you've given. Love what you do. Fly safe.

I have the HTC Vive and also FlyInside and I must say the feeling of being inside the plane is really outstanding. Now, I must also add the resolution quality is still a bit low in IMO, so it's pretty difficult to read dials, and you can see the pixels of the screen. Still is a wonderful experience.

Froogle. Thank you for yet another great informative and entertaining video. My budget is going to the VR option leaving my current 4 -2 monitor setup as it is. Just upgraded the graphics card as step one and I am now getting the funds for the headset. Stil not sure which one because of the lack of X-plane support and if the Vive wil support OpenGL on a short notice. Oculus has stated that for them OpenGL is long term project. How soon are you going to test the leap motion hand tracking add on. Looking at other demo video's this is the truly ultimate experience in adding your hands into the sim. This is a dream to do in PDMG DC-6 which will not be posible because X-plane has no support for VR anymore. I hope OpenGL support will come in the near future or is this possible with the Vive? On the other hand, Oculus or HTC Vive and leap motion handtracking. Who needs to build a cockpit if every 3D cockpit is as real as it gets with this settup. The only one feature stil missing and that is the tactile feedback gloves to give you interaction that you are feeling the knobs and switches. But I have seen some projects that are working on this as well.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing that. Watching the stereo view on the video there seemed to be some lag from when you turned your head to when we saw the viewing angle change in the sim. Did you notice this inside the rift? And since the rift is obviously doing some serious processing to get fps up to 90, is there any perceivable increase in control lad input as p3d generally has a bigger lag than fsx depending on shadow settings.....cheers

Thanks for the thorough review! Im getting an Origin PC (Chronos VR) to run my Vive in a few day. Last sim I flew was Falcon by Spectrum Holobyte many years ago ;) What I have seen in your video excites the hell out of me. I was thinking of getting a warthog controller originally for FSX which meant i also needed to buy foot pedals since I think it doesnt have a twist function on the stick. What peripherals are you using with P3D? Also which version of Prepar3E are folks using and where can I get it? I dont see it at Steam.

Awesome video!!! This is a "most" try for every aviation sim enthusiast. I've try the Leap Motion option and is less than ideal to be honest. I do not recommend getting a Leap Motion for this sole purpose. Is not precise enough to be taken seriously so you might end up clicking something you didn't want it to. I wouldn't get glue on my Rift not even just to try it out. But if you most, make sure is not going to leave traces of glue on your Rift once you remove it. I don't know if this is something that would bother you but then again it might not even be a problem.

You can actually see the 3D mirror in 3D if you look at it and cross your eyes. If you do it right you'll see three images side by side; you need to focus on the center image and ignore the other two. Once you lock in on it it's really cool. I have a 28" monitor and when the video is full screen I sit back about 2' from my monitor and the image appears in 3D about 6 inches in front of my face.

Very interesting video. So from my understanding in terms of performance not related to VR FSX Steam Edition is the better solution at the moment ? I asked because I'll be reinstalling soon and am hesitating between both. As for VR, right now for me it is looking good but a bit too expensive, but I'm quite sure price will get down eventually, and will make it more afordable. at the moment 700€ without shipping so with shipping it get very close to 800€. And I'd also like to test it beforehand, because I'm kinda worried with all those headset about the comfort, when you wear glasses which is also an important point for me. After that at the moment I would still prefer screens, so I can get basically anything I need visible, and in reach of my hand, but I must said I did not knew about that "windows importer" which looks very interesting for having more things in the sim as it is the inconvenient I was thinking about tha, if you have charts and all. So I'm quite interested in testing, all this stuff, but that would be only after I can test so I get a feel for it that I might drop the required money :) Mainly for making sure it is comfortable for long sessions, and with glasses on.

I am running P3D v3 and have been waiting for this moment for VR. However my concerns are that the preferred Oculus system ( easier setup of tracking sensor) test says that my system which is an i7, 16 GB, AMD R9 290, is not good enough. On the other hand the HTC Vive version of the same system test says totally the opposite in that my system is running at high speed and is OK for VR. Thus at the moment due to funds being limited, I am concerned that if I did buy, which I really want to, I may be left with extra expense required to upgrade the system in order to run properly. Tricky decision looms for sure, but your vlog does now give me a lot of information on which to base it. Thank you as always for those thoughts Froogle.

Hey Froogle, Two questions: 1. Are you able to setup predefined views like we do on ezdok? I know you showed the zooming and such, but sometimes it would be nice to jump to a panel without zooming. 2. I think the answer to this is "yes" - will this work with more complex aircrafts such as the Majestic Dash 8? I'm thinking of ordering it and your video is helping me make my decision.

Hi Froogle, can't find anything regarding X-Plane and the Rift. Did a quick google search regarding this and it was basically just, "Dan says he plans to after P3D." Which is very vague. It looks amazing, but I have no intention of going back to FSX or P3D ever again. So have you heard anything? I definitely plan on getting VR, that's for games that aren't Flight Sim, but I would love to use it for Flight Sim (X-Plane) without a doubt. So that's why I asked the above question. I do have a pretty high end rig. Thanks for the video!

So with this headset on you can effectively turn your monitor off ? Is this still in early stages or nearing completion on public sale etc ?Looks very kewl. It will always beat a single or multiple monitors, because looking at monitors you still see static images of nearby items in your peripheral vision. I.e. a painting on your wall, or a window, tea cup, etc etc.

Reading up on Asynchronous Time Warp (ATW), from my understanding, it seems that what they are doing is disconnecting the "camera" view of the oculus headset from the rendering rate of the game. So basically, it seems that the Oculu's headtracking sensor is being updated with the wished for framerate (be it 90 or 150 FPS), but if the game engine has not yet rendered a new frame of the gameworld to display on the Oculu's screens, they simply take the previous frame and "warp" it to fit with the new view angle of the headset. So the game world is still running at the normal FPS, but the camera's sensor updates much faster and displays slightly older frame data until a new frame is ready, ensuring the user doesn't experience jutter.

Or a Vive. Both have their pros and cons. Vive comes with tracked controllers and does room scale tracking though. $799. The Rift is $599 but doesn't have tracked controllers included and though Oculus says they will be out this year, we don't have a price or delivery date. Anyone interested in VR would do well to research both options before buying either to see what is right for you.

Have you found any combination of settings that helps with the fact that distant textures are quite blurry in the VR world? I've tried bumping up the res in the flyinside setting to the max.. i've tried also switching from 1080p in sim to switching my three 24" screens to surround and 5760x1080 mode in the sim.. no change.. increasing AA in the sim.. and NI AA increases, nothing helps and i fear its just a limitation of the resolution being spread over 110 or so degrees of FOV. So you have the tradeoff of straining to see runways in the distance vs the real feel of the aircraft.

Sir: does "Flyinside" cover all of the aircraft available in Fltsim? For example, the DC3? C150? Will it work with the smart phone VR? Thanks

This is so good that I simply have not used P3D without my Oculus Rift since I got it. I even demoed it to the flightschool I go to and they were very impressed. Of course, this has almost zero utility in real life certified training as it is. But of course, it can really help you with your instrument and procedure training at home.

Froogle... regarding Leap motion... I've seen some video's where the sensitivity of the 'virtual' hand can be too sensitive and can 'snap' to the wrong button / knob/ switch. If say you built a 'fake' cockpit with none functioning buttons/switches/knobs... could the accuracy be increased because the relative position of 'THE SIM' is the same as 'the real fake cockpit? I hope you understand what I'm trying to say there :P

frooglesim do you have a pmdg 737 oculus rift video review? All the other reviews kinda "sucks" because they dont show what you see through oculus rift (aka everything is laggy as hell). I just want a review about, how it is touching the buttons, fmc, mcp, all that stuff, and how laggy it is etc etc.

That was insane, I watched it crossed eyed the whole time but saw the whole 3D effect. Gonna get me a Vive. Screw the 3 monitors route.

Only the Vive or the Rift are supported as the headset needs to be attached to a computer.
