Great advice. I like to practice cello sometimes in an open garage or outside (when it's not 100 degrees). The sound is surprisingly strong & carries far. People can hear me all the way down the street & I see heads turning Playing dynamic concert pieces like the Chopin Nocturne or Haydn Concerto from memory also helps me with musical expression. I've only been accompanied by an orchestra twice in my life--once playing a pipe organ in Mexico City, another time on an alto clarinet & they were exhilarating experiences! I'm working on the cello.

I love how you talked at around 8:20 about training the instrument. I play the bass, and have noticed this, too. It's interesting how just by playing differently your instrument can take on different sounds.

I was about to play the first time with an orchestra in may. It was a totally new experience for me to rehearse with an orchestra instead of a pianist. I had so much fun learning new stuff but sadly the concert is cancelled due to the coronavirus... Maybe you could make a video about playing with an orchestra? Totally love your interesting ideas! Greetings from Germany ;)

Great tips thanks ! Also : changing your strings from time to time can help ;-) Seriously, a lot more things goes into producing pro level sound apart from the playing itself. Having a great resonant instrument and maybe as importantly, a pro level bow. I tried a 5000€ bow on a 1000€ cello, and a « free with purchase » bow on a 10.000€ cello. Believe me or not but you could hardly tell the difference…. But again, all this is useless if you don’t have the technique so muchas gracias !

Mr. Ferrández, your videos are very helpful and your tone is very good. I am working my way back through your older videos now. Your tips are excellent, and you may have already done this one: how do I improve my sight reading? I'm an intermediate player and I do not take lessons; my method is essentially to slowly work on a challenging piece bit by bit until I'm happy with it. This works well enough for my purposes but it does little to improve my ability to sight read with others on the rare occasion that I play with others. Do you have such a video already? If not, I would certainly like to hear such tips from a professional, as I know you must learn new music all the time. Thanks either way; I hope you come to play in New Orleans one day.
