Just a quick tip, and it saved me a bunch of headaches. Instead of putting in the speaker holes once the cabinet is built, put them in when it's still flat. You can make the holes by hand, or if you have access to a big enough drill press, set a depth stop. I did that when I made mine, and it was awesome! Also, I really like the little tips and tricks you throw into your videos, keep it up man!

I love how accessible you make it seem man, like you said, you can spend a ton of planning drawing out on CAD or whatever and working out angles, or you can just draw it out right on the surface you're gonna be working on. Now I just gotta steal some tools from my buddy who's an engineer xD

I liked the blue paint. Does the T molding require a special routing bit? My brother who is a little older than me used to love to play video games at the local grocery store (they had a couple). In fact, he would blow is paper route money on playing these when they came out. I think I am going to make him one of these. I think he'll be reliving his teenage years very soon:) Thanks for sharing!

Well done. Thanks for sharing! Edit: The ONLY issue is see is that you are using Sanwa's (designed for metal or 1/2" MDF) are being used on 3/4" MDF. This makes the joystick a nub on top (too short). I would have went with a Happ Super with a ball top shaft instead. (but the bartop joystick is easily upgradable though, which is good news!). Nonetheless, good work!
@TheGeekPub
@TheGeekPub 7 жыл бұрын
"makes the joystick a nub on top (too short)" Nope. This is addressed in numerous places. And if you don't want to backbore as shown in the video, you can use 1/2" MDF for the control panel top with no issues.

I noticed you spent a long time spackling your brad nailer holes and cutting 3/4 inch strips to assemble the cabinet. Wouldn't have a biscuit joiner been a better solution and made the cabinet stronger. I used a biscuit joiner on my cocktail cabinet build and really loved it. I had no external nail holes and the table is built like a tank.
@TheGeekPub
@TheGeekPub 7 жыл бұрын
Sure. But I try to show methods that most anyone can build. Your average Joe doesn't have a biscuit jointer. You can build this arcade with only a jigsaw and hammer if you have limited tools.
@benjaminrittgers8509
@benjaminrittgers8509 7 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. I am blessed with a shop full of tools that most people don't have. The jig saw seemed to give me the most trouble though. I do love your speaker grill advice and I am taking your wiring ideas to heart. I like the electrical box in the bottom as opposed to just drilling a hole for a power strip. I am stealing that idea.

Love the VID, cant wait to make my own... however, hate to ask this, but any way you can do a video (maybe you have one and I have not gone though all you vids yet) for the average Joe that just may have simple tools like you said... hammer, drill, jig saw, etc.?
@TheGeekPub
@TheGeekPub 7 жыл бұрын
There's not much to show. Just use the jigsaw to cut the lines instead of the table saw. Use screws instead of brad nails.

@MorseB

Dumb question here, but I'm going to ask it anyway. Is a bar top cabinet the same as a standing cabinet just without the bottom? If yes, then would it be possible to just build a bar top that sets into a base so it's a convertible depending on your living situation? It seems like other than a coin op, which is not needed for a home machine, the base is just empty and could be little more than a matching stand for a bar top.
@TheGeekPub
@TheGeekPub 7 жыл бұрын
To some degree this is true. A bartop is usually a smaller monitor and smaller form factor all around than a stand up arcade. I have actually considered making a convertible one with some neat stuff in the bottom of it.

Absolutely. 3/4" material is nearly always overkill. 1/2" will work fine but I'm not sure about t-molding for 1/2" material.

Hi... I understand this is about building the unit, but do you have any info on the Raspberry Pi implementation? I'm kind of new to the RPi but I think you mentioned selecting games, etc. Just wondering how to make this look and feel like the game and not boot up to the RPi prompt. I know my question is more about making the Pi work and not the build, but if you could direct me to a web source, I'd appreciate it. BTW, I just looked at your pricing for plans and guild. You are definitely making it easy to make these plans available at a very reasonable price. I'm a woodturner and semi woodworker and these plans I think I could handle. Regards, Irv in Florida

Have you ever made a mame cabinet or bartop arcade to look more 'furniture grade'? I am thinking of building a few arcade cabinets for my new house, but I want them made with quality woods and have them look like pieces of furniture rather than the typical t-molding arcade classic (which I also love). Just thought you might have since you also seem to have a nice woodshop.
