The craftsmanship is wonderful, and I love that nearly everything is recycled from somewhere else. 14:30 that input lag though... oof. I'm gonna definitely use a normal screen in my own build, and there's no way I'm not testing it first. That's nearly a full second.
@WoodenItBeGrand
@WoodenItBeGrand Жыл бұрын
@@iami3rian394 Thanks for your comments. It's nice what you can do with old pallets! But the input lag was just me hitting the wrong buttons. Once I got it right, Wonderboy jumps when I hit the button. The games actually play very well.
@iami3rian394
@iami3rian394 Жыл бұрын
@@WoodenItBeGrand my pleasure my friend. No, I noticed that you were hitting the wrong buttons at first. If you'll notice, when you do finally hit the correct jump button, there's a noticable amount of time (I'd say 60-75ms) between the sound of the button press, and the character jumping. There are devices that correct this, and they're very cheap, but the issue is definitely some combination of your pie settings, visual processing on the screen (things like upscaling or static removal etc), and the fact that it's a medical monitor (not exactly 144ghz). It's entirely possible you don't even notice. It doesn't matter much for many games, but trying to take down Mike Tyson in punch out would be pretty much impossible on this set up. 🙃 I'm not exactly a carpenter, took some woodworking classes back in highschool.... but I've been gaming for forty years. I promise you my friend, it's there, and it's not wonderful. My current set up has around 6ms of input lag (about a frame) and THAT'S noticable to me. Of course, it's just a pie and a TV, so it doesn't look nearly as lovely as yours. If you care at all, you can look up ways to reduce the lag. Different emulators for different games make a difference, driver settings for the emulators you're using, the lag removal device I mentioned (which I think are around $20). If not, well, I thank you for the wonderful video. I plan on building a machine myself, and I learned a lot from watching it. One thing was that I'm gonna need more tools. 🙃

This video joins both woodworking and retro gaming hobbies of mine. Fantastic job. Love how you fabricated it all. I built a MAME cocktail cabinet 23 years ago with the help of may father-in-law. He taught me a lot about the process. This makes me want to build a super slim 2 player stand up cab. Electronics are so small these days that the control panel is the widest item.
@WoodenItBeGrand
@WoodenItBeGrand Жыл бұрын
Wow! That's awesome! You were way ahead of your time with MAME back then. I built my first cabinet about 10 years ago & it was definitely a learning experience. One of the reasons I wanted to build this one. And this is already fairly slim. I guess it depends on the angle of the monitor you choose to use, but yes, I think it could definitely be a lot slimmer. Thanks for the input! 🙏🏻

I built a bartop arcade cabinet a few years ago. Its certainly a great project for anyone wanting something a little challenging but not too challenging. Most of the workworking is fairly easy to do, no need for fancy joints and the kits with buttons and joysticks make the electronics not too hard even for the novice. Other than that everyone has different ideas on what to add etc. I love the keyboard idea, but i opted to put USB ports on the front of mine to attach a keyboard/mouse or attach other controllers. Hopefully people who watch the video will give it ago. You really don't need plans, just grab some butcher paper and draw up a side panel design on it cut one, then trace it to cut the other side panel. Also watch excellent videos like this one :0-)

Besides just how incredibly legit this project was/is, you inspired me to make something of my own. Instead of dealing with the Pi and all that, I want to make a cabinet that houses all my vintage systems with side door panels to access the consoles and swap games all made of clear acrylic to be able to show off the systems. Route the controllers to the front, or simply make a chase way of sorts for the cords to slide through so you can sit in front of it and still be able to play and not be hindered by a short cord. Call it Cabinet: Curated or something like that, where you have your favorite game from each system ready to go. Make an addition to where you have the speakers at, and just add in a box switcher for inputs and Voila. Obviously make it look sick along the way like yours. Definitely loving this video man. From the start I was getting ideas and that's why I love these videos. Always something to take away from it, whether it be a 100% project dupe or simply inspiration. Thanks for sharing this! BTW this is the first time I've seen one of your videos, Instant Sub Mate!

Being able to replace components so easily got me to thinking if it would be difficult to make a variety of control panels (where the joystick and buttons are) and casing fronts (the panel where the coin slots are) that could be swapped out for a variety of games. For instance, swapping out the controls for a steering wheel, and removing the casing front to reveal a space with pedals available, so the arcade cabinet can be easily used for a racing game. I've been watching a handful of these homemade arcade cabinet videos, and I'm starting to think that it might be a better route than my original idea (trying to find a broken arcade cabinet for sale to hollow out and replace the innards with a Raspberry Pi setup) since it would provide more flexibility if I can incorporate ideas like that.
@WoodenItBeGrand
@WoodenItBeGrand Жыл бұрын
Yes, if you want the flexibility to change between all of those different game styles then component construction makes the most sense. My first cab had 2 x 8 way joysticks with 6 buttons each, a trackball in the middle, another 4 way joystick with 2 buttons & room for a spinner. The control panel was oversized to fit it all, and it didn't really work. This cp is so simple to remove and/or replace. I've also added a piece of thin ply after the video under the cp (above the keyboard drawer) and it just means I don't have to stress about perfecting all the cp wiring. I can just drop the cp in and not worry about the keyboard drawer contents catching on anything. Would love to see what you end up building! Good luck! 🙏🏻

That was a very, very impressive build mate. The vision & planning alone was commendable but the amount of moving parts & the amount of different types of skill sets involved made it insane 👏👏👏 pepper a bit of nostalgia in there as well for all those warm & fuzzies & you've got yourself a winner 🏆 oh, & it goes without saying, you're filmmaking is phenomenal 👌

@Wooden It Be Grand I would hope you do continue to evolve in the theme of this video, would be a shame not to utilise all those 'Jack of all trades' hats you seem to wear mate 👌 Don't be fooled into thinking the type of bench I made is a better design than any others or that you have to make one either. It's made solely for predominant handtool work as that's the type of furniture making I want to try & get into. If that wasn't my path however, no way I'd choose a Roubo bench over some others.

Yes, with all the extra space inside the cabinet using a pi, I considered adding a home brew beer tap & fridge. But liquids & electronics never mix well if I have anything to do with it! 🤣

That's one reason I used a monitor and not a CRT, just to keep this a bit slimmer. But you could always build a bartop cab if space is limited. And I've also seen some genius foldaway ideas too. The inner components don't take up too much space anymore. Good luck! ✌🏻

Yes, I understand. I made this video more of a 'how I made it' than a 'how to make it', but I think you could do it with a lot less tools, albeit taking more time & energy. I'll be making a video on using minimal tools in the near future. Cheers!

so sad i life in a appartment, wich there is no space for such wonderfull tools, maybe i am considering moving out so i have a shed and alot of space. beside the basic controll layout (personal taste) this is one of the most beautiful designs i have come across youtube. thing is i want this cabinet in my livingroom and i don't like most basic arcade skins, they look silly and off with my home decoration, but again this is a personal opinnion, this one shines serenity and harmony in my livingroom. very good job😊

Wow! Thank you truly for your comment. Serenity & Harmony - I like. And yes I think I have been very fortunate to be able to use my parent's empty garage. But I have also returned from permanently abroad (where I didn't have workshop space) to be able to do this. So there are always positives and negatives. I look forward to doing more projects now.

Great build. I personally like to add a CRT shader in retroarch to get as close as possible to that authentic retro look when it comes to emulation of these older games. On a raspberry PI 3b you are a little power limited but there are a couple on there that can be customized and will also run at full speed to provide scanlines and a dithering / desync effect which makes the look on an LCD much more authentic. Alternatively there are relatively inexpensive external HDMI scanline generators on the market that sit in line between the computer and screen which would give a consistent retro look across all games and also in menus, without much setup effort or limiting factor of the PI! Personal preference, but for me this enhances the nostalgia factor no end!!
@WoodenItBeGrand
@WoodenItBeGrand Жыл бұрын
Cheers for you comment. I always appreciate comments on the tech side of this build. I did have an Scan Line Generator on an old mame pc cab I built years ago & will likely do something similar with this in the future. Scan lines & lag are two things I need to address & perhaps that means stepping up to a pi4 but I'll be taking on all this feedback. Appreciated!
@RichTeaChannel
@RichTeaChannel Жыл бұрын
@@WoodenItBeGrand Hmm... for input lag I would suspect more likely the input control board but if it's an Ultimarc they are definitely a reputable brand so that's odd... you could test it using a keyboard via USB in game before deciding that the pi is to blame. I have a small Pi3b setup running Lakka and didn't notice a crazy amount of lag even using a basic software CRT filter (which does have a performance hit) and a regular fightstick from Qanba. Anyway, enjoy!

This is absolutely incredible. I want to build mine based off of yours, because I love the rustic look. My idea is to make it 4 player (8 buttongs for each) and instead of a coin collector, I want to put in a mini fridge. I want to add a tracker ball and possibly 2 light guns as well. I haven't been able to read through all your comments, but do you by any chance have blueprints/plans on how you built this. Would love general dimensions. Maybe this can be your next inspiration ;)
@WoodenItBeGrand
@WoodenItBeGrand 11 ай бұрын
Very glad to hear that I've helped inspire you to create one of your own. I did build one many years ago from MDF that had a trackball in between 2 x 8-way joysticks, with a second 4-way joystick above the trackball (and the intention to add a spinner that never got added). Also this cabinet was originally going to have a beer tap built into it and I had an old RedBull fridge ready for a 5ltr mini keg, but it was just too much for this project. There is a link in my video description to plans that I used (based off Koenigs 2-Player Upright design) as well as button layout templates. For 4 player. I'd recommend checking out the resources on forum.arcadecontrols.com/ or similar. There is a wealth of knowledge & experience there. Good luck with the build and I'd love to see what you create!!!! Cheers!
