Thanks Bill! I remember Dad spending many hours at the kitchen table cutting and splicing these films. There was a pomus block he used to make the ends of the film rough, and then glue to do the slicing. And a magnifying glass to tell where to do the cut! As for WAC, I remember seeing him on the BC Ferries in the late 60's too. An incredible fellow - as FInance Minister he used to keep track of the Provinces accounts in a single ledger book.

Can we agree to call Dave Wilkie "The Ansel Adams of British Columbia"? Imagine the effort involved to shoot and splice all this film. Thanks for posting on KZbin, Mike P.S. Besides being British Columbia's greatest premier, WAC was a nice man as well. I had occasion to speak with him (in the company of his wife and friends) on a BC Ferry ca.1965. He was approachable and took time to listen to his citizens (me).

Thanks, Mike. I enjoyed "riding along" and thinking back to to those times, also to good memories of riding the Starlight dinner train with my wife and looking down to the water and seeing those views years later.

I meant to say "pumice block" - basically a block of wood with something like a very find sandpaper finish to it. Applied to the ends of the film you were gluing together.

those are Alco rs-10's; they were basically an rs-3 in a new rs-18 body; like the rs-3 they had the v12 244 engine w/ 1600 hp output; likewise could pull more than geeps and most definitely had that by-far-the-best of-all-alco-sounds the turbocharged 244 dodging the 251 bullet that killed alco

The grades are severe, over 3% in some places. A locomotive that must maintain track speed, or keep to a schedule despite grades and trailing tonnage, must apply 3.2 time the horsepower for every 0.5% grade increase.
