Hi Mike, I'm bagging up onion plants and weighing out fertilizer for my onion plant co-op. Don't ask, it's just what I've done for the last xx years. I've been a gardener as long as I've been a motorcycle rider. Anyway, I think it's great when something goes wrong and it's not my bike. That helps when it happens to me one day. I'll be back tonight after I'm done with everything else and watch the whole thing 3 more times. Mike from Maryland

Righteous work! And, how wonderful it is to see proper gear-driven cams on a big twin as opposed to the ridiculous bean counter solution Harley insisted on by using chains, starting with the Twin Cam and the ensuing debacle and reputational damage that did to the company, never mind the damage it did to many of our wallets... It’s always a bit frustrating to have to wait on gaskets to arrive. I got my ’54 FLE ready to go last week just as the warmer weather finally hit here in Colorado, only to have fuel pour out of the carb when I went to fill the tank. Now I’m waiting for the carb kit to arrive so I can put it all back together and ride. The wait will make it all the more enjoyable though, and I will be happy knowing the carb is is good shape.
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
If I bought new gaskets every time I took apart one of my Linkerts, I wouldn't be able to buy groceries any more. Remove them carefully, and a little white lithium grease will seal them up again and they won't stick next time.
@JohnTheBlacksmithUSA2 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 the gaskets on it are old and brittle, and the float was full of gas, so the rebuild is in order. I reuse gaskets a lot but in this case it needs a bit of love and attention before it’s ready to go. Not a big deal, while I’m waiting for the parts I’ve already cleaned the carb and all parts and reassembled what I can.
@royalblue20432 жыл бұрын
I had an old Stratochief a 1964 model I believe.I paid about 200 bucks for it. It had a sticky float.I would tap it with a small finishing hammer.Saved my bacon on numerous occasions and I was able to get home. My motorcycle did somewhat the same thing a few months ago. Lol
@JohnTheBlacksmithUSA2 жыл бұрын
@@royalblue2043 Yeah, I had a Honda in the 80s that was the same way. Used to carry a screwdriver with me just for the purpose of using the handle to rap on the carb bowl. In this case, the fuel was just pouring out of the Linkert, both from where the float bowl meets the body, as well as out the intake. Carb kit should arrive today or tomorrow though!

Hi Mike I fell down the rabbit hole and started watching a bunch of videos that came across my feed showing harley kick start kickback.can you do a video on this and is there a certain procedure that prevents this or is there a kit that can be installed in the bike that prevents kick start kickback on older bikes.thanks in advance
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
I've shown it a lot of times. Turn on the fuel at the petcock. Kick it through with the choke closed and the throttle open all the way a couple of times. Now open the choke all the way. RETARD THE TIMING. Turn the ignition switch on. Crack the throttle open just a little bit and kick the engine over. When it starts, advance the timing. I've shown this a bunch of times. Don't forget to retard the timing before kicking it with the ignition switch on. Okay. Now you're an expert. We show cold starting these thing repeatedly. Go to our KZbin homepage and click on "videos." There are, at this moment, 227 videos up. I've shown kickstarting in there a bunch.

What causes kickback ? ( compression) so how is it avoided (the steps you've explained in there specific order )? Do all harley kick starts grab and are capable of kickback or did they find a solution and start installing solution at some point ? Hi Mike, I was just thinking about the failure of the bush in the cover..... could that have affected the bike's running, if it was not keeping the cam where it should be and altering the timing etc, maybe even making it run somewhat irregular. After all the problem wasn't the cam but it's mountings.
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
From what I hear the bike was really giving a bad time and would no longer start. That cam was wobbling around. The bushing (not having been pinned when it was installed), spun and not only turned itself down smaller, but it enlarged the hole in the cover where the bushing used to fit. The cam also got damaged. Sometimes you just have to correct everything you can find and start over again.
@thakery57202 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 Yeah, I got what the problem was and how things have been resolved but wondered about the cam moving around having maybe upset the cam timing and running of the bike. To qualify my question, on a 2010 96 inch twin cam ( now 113 inch etc etc ) I had S&S640 chain drive cams and with (the needed) higher valve spring pressures increasing the forces on the chains and tensioners, I noticed that things were 'not quite right' when I took the cover off to check the tensioners. I found the tensioners were worn and the cams, chains etc etc all showed signs of the cams not rotating in a constant manner - cam lobe surfaces were almost indented suggesting to me that things had been 'bouncing around'. I changed the whole cam chest contents to avoid futher trouble - cam support plate, oil pump, went to gear drive cams for 'better timing control' as the adverts state - and found that the bike ran smoother and was not as noisy from the cam area any more. I'd already had the crank trued and welded before the initial build so runout was with the required limits - I was lucky and learned a lesson about chain drive not being a good thing for such high-lift cams before things got really bad ! Anyway, I just wondered if the Pan you are working on had gotten to the poor running (and not starting) state due to unreliable cam timing - thinking further on it, the 'mobile cam' would have put undue forces on the lifters/lifter blocks with it's general instability, 'fore and aft' as well as up and down. Thank heavens it decided not to start before a total blow-up and rebuild situation occured.

Hello Mike I have what could be a silly question... My bike has a setup with Evo -87 FXRT and a -72 gearbox kick only, belt transmision from god only knows... Now when I kick it sometimes loose compresion for several turns on the motor, not all the time but sometimes. Question is is that normal? First time with kick only, and its realy hard to start, runs fine when started, mikuni 40 carb regular circuit breaker. Changing to a S&S E soon and hope it will help. Have a nice day Mike(s) and helo from sweden
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Hello. It sounds like your kicker gears are not locking up. Pull the cover off and repair it. You'll learn how it works that way. I believe your Mikuni 40 has an accelerator pump. That should help make it start easily. That starter problem is, like I mentioned, probably the gears hanging up. But, another possibility is a valve in the engine sticking open. You have nice day, but a service manual from a 1984 Softail would improve your day and an earlier one for the transmission. You just need a couple of books and get ready to explore. It actually sounds like a fun bike.

It was damaged, spun the bushing in the cam cover. All needed replacing at that point. it was caused by misalignment, due to a mismatched bunch of parts.

Wow - proper gaskets eh? - even if they are the wrong flavour. Over here we just use old cereal packets, Swiss Army knife scissors, English teeth & an electric cattle fence for the holes (bite down on card, pee on fence, repeat to suit), then stick the resultant mess down with copious amounts of Blue 32 (Hylomar) so all the oilways get blocked too. End result? - Brum brum brum - knock knock knock - clang clang clunk - silence . . . but no oil leaks! . . . every time : )
