This was worth watching just for the guy's east coast accent.

Thanks for the video. I have an SL-23 heading out soon, so I can use these tips. Didn't see the removing the platter, cover and weight parts. Good points though.

how much does on the average to ship that box with turntable?
@bellgab3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for showing people how to 'do it right'. How many times have we seen the disastrous results from lazy shipping? I have been selling on ebay for over 20 years and you just charge an extra fee for materials to ship it safely.

I'd recommend this video to anyone who is shipping anything fragile (I'm a carrier for USPS and like to show customers how to do it right). One small change I'd make: When you loaded the dust cover into the outside box, you didn't leave any space in between the first box and the second box (the inner box was too long). You should really use a larger outer box so you have at least a couple of inches ALL the way around the inner boxes. Bigger boxes cost more to ship but it will be a little safer: if the parcel gets dropped you don't know which edge or corner will be affected.

Hi Jon, what about using the original Technics box it came in? Isn't that the best option if I still have that?
@andreasvonbubnoff47375 жыл бұрын
@@panskillit OK great. So, is there anything to be careful about when lifting and reinserting the platter? I seem to remember some people worry that that could do damage if done the wrong way... And then there is the question: What's the best mail carrier? Or better to use shipping company? Or as carry-on on a plane? Thanks again!

-You must have spent over $50. of just bubble wrap, peanuts. etc: That's crazy! There must be a cheaper way

Jon, thank you for taking the time to produce this video. A customer sent me the link to your video because I do not generally ship audio equipment and you have great pointers specifically for Technics turntables. I do have a couple points to make regarding the packaging, not as a criticism, just so other viewers can take some other thoughts into consideration. Firstly, for all Jon's great care and expense, if this was damaged in transit no shipper would honor the insurance claim , the packaging simply does not meet their standards for a covered loss. I think parcel carrier's additional Insurance borders on Consumer Fraud; the rates are excessive and they pay on very few claims but that is a completely different topic. I think I recognized the box you're using from FedEx office. It's a pretty flimsy single-walled box, which is overly large for the item. FedEx (and UPS) charges as much by the dimensions of the box as is it does by the weight... this box could easily double your shipping charges.... add insult to injury, the parcel still would not be insured because the turntable is not double boxed. Home Depot and U-Haul and most moving companies sell quality double-walled boxes (for much less than FedEx Office) .... if the box is too tall do not be afraid to cut it down to size, there are plenty of videos on this on KZbin I am not a fan of low quality loose fill (IE white Styrofoam peanuts)... but if you must use them you should fill the box to a mound over the top of the box and use the flaps of the box to compress the fill firmly.... in the video, the level of the packaging material is an inch or two below the top of the box , everything is going to shift around madly in this box during transit. I find the biggest causes of damage in transit are multiple items in a box not packed securely enough which bang against each other and intrusions into the box by other parcels in the carrier's truck..... if a careless FedEx employee dropped one of the 100+ pound centrifuges that I'm routinely shipping on to this box, the turntable could be trashed, and as crazy as it seems you would not be covered ... you have to take circumstances like that into consideration.... the bubble wrap is great, but I would encourage shippers to use better quality boxes, solid foam packing material, and double box any electronics where you can..
