Packing for a family of FOUR (what I ACTUALLY used)
Packing for a family trip is HARD!! I used to travel full time so I thought I had it figured out.. turns out I did not.
I naively recorded my packing video before, because I was on vacation I didn't work on it so when I got back I thought it would be fun to review what I SAID I needed v what I actually needed!
I hope this video about packing for a family vacation was helpful for you!

Flying with a 2yr old and 11mo old in a month… Decided to just rent car seats with our car rental instead of hauling ours around (both are in upright convertible ones,so big) We will see how it goes… My mindset is, if you’re not going to the middle of nowhere, you can always buy something you forgot or something you end up needing… Basically try to simplify the amount of stuff you are packing and carrying through the airport.

Yeah I highly recommend just renting car seats with the rental car - that's what we always do and we've had no issues.

I did that and it was wonderful! Highly recommend. The only annoying thing is you have to call the day before to make sure it’s guaranteed as sometimes you order it and then they run out of them. At least I was warned that by one of the reps from the place I had rented with because I purchased through a third party (like an app that helps you find cheaper rentals) so you can run in to issues with renting the car seats as the third party app doesn’t know the quantities for the supplies at that location. Again… just my experience haha it was really stressful.

Hey Shayla! Thank you for the tips! An item that was crucial for baby to sleep (and for me as well 😊) while traveling was the Portable Blackout Curtains with Suction Cups! It comes with a bag which makes it easier to travel with it. We use at home as well because my baby was getting distracted with the light that goes through the curtain rod and the ceiling, now we have a pitch black room. Thanks to that she is sleeping longer hours!

Dear Shayla, I just wanted to share as a mom-to-be (32 weeks today!) and someone who loves the outdoors (hiking, camping, backpacking...), your honest videos on how you are building together a life of family adventures give me so much hope. A year ago I was on the Pacific Crest Trail, attempting to do a section hike with my husband. And now...I'm on the couch trying to find the energy to make chocolate chip cookies :P One of the most challenging aspects of this pregnancy has been accepting this season of life where I can hardly walk 15 minutes without lower back and pelvic pain. I know the time for adventures will come again and I cannot wait to share them with our little one. It's just so so so reassuring to see someone figuring it out a few steps ahead

We took our 6 mo and 22 mo olds to Europe for 2 weeks and I can vouch for mindset being soooo so so important 😅. That and making sure you don’t over book your schedule. Kids just simply can’t go go go all day like adults, at least not mine. I would say though, if you have a really little baby that’s still just sleeps all the time, you can do more. Just put them in a carrier and you are golden! My Holy Grail will never travel without items are baby carriers and snacks. That and we packed everything into one checked bag so we just each had a baby and a back pack (one was a diaper bag the other was the snack bag). We also brought an umbrella stroller (would recommend) and car seats (on the fence about that one. We had to last time and it was nice having them but they were such a pain 😅). Great video as usual Shayla! Thanks for the after the trip report!!

I pack by the categories eat, sleep, potty, play, drink, clothes. That pretty much covers everything for us! I also have a list on notes so I don’t have to recreate it every time and I feel like I can travel more on a whim.

good luck! we took our first flight when our LO was about 9 months, and looking back, my mindset was the thing I messed up. Wayyy easier said than done of course, but if your focus is arriving safely and happily, it’s so much smoother than focusing on the schedule/the tricks/all the stuff

Just got back from our week long NY Adirondacks trip. I always bring a non wifi monitor, our hatch sound machine, and his grandmother had an oxo booster seat that worked really well for the table. He’s a bigger 2.5 year old and it worked great!

When in doubt break out the snacks lol that is most of the entertainment for my 19 month old. And get the wiggles out before the flight some airports have play areas. And just simplify like you were saying. Loved this video and your attitude about traveling with kids. I feel the same way and just love showing my little one new things.

The best tip we figured out when traveling with a 2 year old is to have time each day to stop at a park or easy trail or just have time to run around and move their body.

We have an extra sound machine and baby monitor that we specifically use for travel. I got both from Facebook marketplace so they weren’t full price. We also travel with blackout curtains from Amazon. Keeping sleep similar is a lifesaver for us during travel.

So so so happy for you!! My husband's family lives on the other side of the country so we were kind of forced to travel from a very young age. We get back there 4/5 times a year. The first time my baby was on a plane was at 6 weeks. It's weird, because you'd think traveling and throwing off routine would be super stressful, but for me and my family it has really helped us keep our sanity. We get away we let the grandparents help while we are there and overall we sweat the small stuff much less. Congratulations on a great trip!🎉

We just got back vack from Bali. Lollipops were very helpful and good for ear trouble. We had extra on the flight home and I got my almost three year old to walk up and down the aisle asking all the kids if they wanted one. Gave her something to do and made the flight nicer for everyone. Embrace the culture wherever you travel. Luckily in Bali everyone loves kids and they will all just embrace taking the kids along for the ride. We even had her in with us getting couples massages. They just put her on the table and massaged her too. We all had lots of laughs. Games downloaded on a device is very useful and ring ahead for accommodation to arrange a cot (more like a pack and play) and they will have it set up ready to go in your room. If you dont have a washer dryer you can buy washing powder sheets and do a few things in the sink by hand and not worry about powder getting through your luggage.

We just got back from our first long road trip with our toddler and it is 100% about mindset!! A vacation with kids isn't really a vacation, it's still work, but we had a great time just rolling with whatever happened, especially regarding our toddlerʼs sleep and mood. It would have been so much harder if I'd gone in with expectations because they all would have been shattered 😂

Great tips! Especially with flying in yellow! We love our travel high chair but my son is 1 years old and doesn’t eat well without being in one. I think it really depends on the kid. I think bringing new toys is really helpful on long flights! I just flew alone with my little guy and both times the descent was the most brutal for him, even with bottles he out right refused and cried the whole way down. Definitely go with a positive mindset I’m so lucky we sat next to helpful people.

Indeed, the mindset almost has it all. My main struggle when I'm traveling with my kids (now 6y & 3 and a half) is how can I have or get them acting properly 😂 and the looks i get when they don't ,and it shouldn't matter the most. Also, snacks and small activities. When we travel by car (which is the most frequent transportation mean), we definitely have to have the travel potty, the one with hygienic bags. We can use it as potty and also as support on the toilet..

Great video! Thank you! Unfortunately the one floating device for the littlest one, other kids kept grabbing it at the pool to pull themselves up ,therfore making it unsafe for me to use at a public pool.. just as a heads up to anyone looking into it. Just keep an extra eye around you if in a busy location. I really loved it though because my son loved it when we did get to use it at other places. I'm excited to try those other ones you showed!

We’re traveling for the first time with our 18 month old next week. We did get an Airbnb. Having a separate space to chill while she naps is essential! I wanted a place with a nice sitting area on the porch. The place we got has a porch swing! It also comes with a washer and dryer, and there are even kids toys for different ages and a pack and play! Our trip is a car journey, only about 3 hours. I’m a little nervous about the drive (doing it during her nap), since we have to stop to charge our ev. We’re hoping she won’t wake up, or at least can be calm. Since it’s a car trip, we’re also bringing some food for her in a cooler for breakfast and food before her naps, and some food for us (lunch is while she naps). We will likely get Instacart for some grocery odds and ends too that evening.

Now that my son is toddler age, I'm thinking of bringing my hip seat so I can easily pick him up (have support) and put him down if needed through the airport or during our excursions.
