The Artist:
Chitrasenan, a folk musician from Madurai, is as his name suggests 'A king' of the 'arts'. While drama and acting were windows to the outside world, music to him was a door to his own universe. With the folklore of his town built in songs that span from life, to death and everything in between, Sithirasenan from the very beginning was a voice for every moment that was immortalised in song. From being the child who was to rouse his fellow classmates after lunch break at school, to singing for the dead as he undertakes cremation rituals. The songbook of his entire culture is always at the tip of his tongue, carefully preserving oral traditions that have spanned for hundreds of years.
The Song:
Aadi Kaathu is a folk song that speaks of a seasonal moment in time, of a moment lost in calendars long past. A moment that describes the months of January and February, the Tamil Thai months, where Paddy is harvested in the village. As the paddy is taken to markets in the night on bullock carts, this song was created to cast away fear from Bandits and keep them awake. With the advent of street lights, the song lost its purpose and was soon forgotten. Chitrasenan revives this ancient everyday tradition and telling stories of yesteryear to the young of his village through this song.
