My Rough Ryder tortoise shell Barlow is centered, very sharp, and has sliced sausages, cheese, stabbed olives and other delicacies and lives in a buffalo skin slip. For the price, it's hard to beat. And it's quite a good looking knife.

Brother your knives I always love to see amazing kit . You mentioned Jack Wolf knives to me they are over priced but the knives you showed today are great value and fair prices. I would love to get my hands on a Ashley Harrison knife his prices are very fair you get an amazing knife for the money but like you say hard to come by but maybe some day I can get my hands on one . Thanks for sharing brother 🤙

Another fine presentation Paddy, but for one thing. A few times you referred to the Chinese Barlows as the American style. Not true. I never saw a Barlow with as skinny a bottom as the Rough Ryder/Rider. Anything made by the Chinese is their style. The origin of the style is British from the 1600's

Love the video. The Barlow is definitely my favorite traditional knife. The S&M and GEC Are beautiful knives.

Fit & Finish - you're absolutely right Paddy, it's a heated debate. My tuppence worth: any knife must function properly as a knife, no compromises. Beyond that, it's a question of price - if you're paying good money then you're entitled to expect perfection, or as near to perfection as makes no difference. Agreed W.R.Case can make a beautiful knife - when they want to! All too often, unfortunately, they don't. I've a return rate of 4 in 5, compared to only 1 in 10 with GEC. Different strokes for different folks. I care little for blade centering (as long as it's not fouling the liner), but a non-flush backspring (open or closed) annoys the bejeesus out of me. Ditto poorly matched covers. And flappy or weak blades. It's not till you see how many different things can go wrong with a pocket knife that you start to respect the makers who get everything right.

Some wonderful knives Paddy! I only have one old A. Wright to compare but yes, the newer ones are fantastic. I love that GEC!! Excellent video my friend!

Beautiful Barlows! I recently picked up a 1973 Case Barlow. Also never apologize for a long video like this. My Grandparents died when I was younger and watching your videos makes me feel as though I'm listening to a knife chat with my Grandpa. Thank you for your videos!

Daniel's Family Knives are the highest quality production traditional knives now and a slight cut above GEC but they are pricey and they have many different steel choices. They are basically higher end GEC/Queen knives

I've got a Michael May sheepsfoot swayback but for 120 usd it has massive gaps in the backspring. But the action is good and I like the bog oak. I've been getting a little bit of shrinkage in the covers of the last two Rosecrafts I've bought. Bone and wood

I think Case is resting on their name and being made in the USA. RoseCraft are being made in China and there is talk of them being made in the US. I actually have mixed feelings about that as much as I would like to see American jobs created I would like to see RoseCraft be able to keep their quality and price point the way they can now being made overseas. If RoseCraft prices start creeping up near Jack Wolf territory I personally can live with peeling the China sticker off a RoseCraft and get the price and quality we have today.

Hey Paddy ☘️ The British Barlow is my favourite traditional pattern, especially as it originated in the UK. 🇬🇧 That AH with the worked backspring is simply stunning! I really enjoyed that, posse of blades, especially the American versions. 🇺🇸 Thanks for sharing, Be well brother 🙏

I recently bought an Arthur Wright Ettrick in olive wood from Moonraker. It definitely has some fit and finish issues but ultimately I don't mind. The back end has a little burning presumably from the buffing wheel, just on a couple of the corners in very small places. There is a fingernail width gap between the backspring and liner on the back end. The blade is definitely off centre but not rubbing. And the blade grind is a little bit uneven. But in terms of functionality its excellent, great action and lockup, really solid. The contouring on the handle is good, the finish of the wood/pins/bolster is very good and there's minimal gapping apart from the back end. And the pieces of olive wood chosen are just beautiful and have a really unique character, I never really look at the back end when I'm holding it and using it so aesthetically for me it's great. And the functionality is the most important thing for me and it's great in that respect. Things that would be a red flag for me is any blade rap, that just shouldn't happen on any good pocket knife IMO. And proud tips that can be caught with a finger, the tip should be at least 1mm below the level of the liners, ideally a little more.

For my taste, a strong pull has a place for some knives that need one for what their intended use is. I never enjoy an overly strong pull on small knives. I do not want to struggle opening a pocket knife ever. Try using one often during your day and and I bet you will not like it either. I cannot remember worrying about one closing on my fingers. If it happens once will teach a valuable lesson, everyone should already know. Heavy opening knives compensate for opening smoothness when opening because of the overly strong spring. There is no way you can tell a Bear Trap pocket knife closes smoothly with a powerful back spring. The chances of you cutting yourself opening a hard opening knife are more likely to happen because it is hard to open. I believe the most balanced opening knife is a Swiss Army Knife. Having numerous different tools of different types and sizes most all are not hard to open use and close. The whittler pattern is a smart way to balance blade opening because it uses two springs opening the main large blade and the smaller blades use a single thinner spring for opening them. ☘🥔🔪🤔That is what I think!👍

I had the same issue with an Arthur Wright Barlow. I read online to leave it half open to flex the spring so I put it on a high shelf like this for about a week or 10 days and it helped. Then flushed out the pivot and re-oiled it. Next step was to open and close it hundreds of times. This took it from a max effort to shift it to a pinchable open. Hopefully this could work for you.
