WOW, ScoutCrafter - This episode on locks was very impressive! Most of us are well-acquainted with padlocks, as we've used them to secure our bikes, our lockers, our sheds and what-have-you. I LOVE the way you took lock lubrication to a fine art. There is nothing like a nice, smooth operating, lubricated padlock! Lock Picking Lawyer! That guy is astonishing! Pretty sure that he could pick almost ANY lock. Thanks.

That lock with the US on it is probably a military lock. Those like the one you have was always “set” locks. Four or five licks all keyed the same. Love the lion lock. That would look great on a vintage toolbox.

What a cool video Scoutcrafter! I love all your stuff, but this one especially, is right in my wheelhouse. Back in the 80s, I had a student teacher show me the basics of lockpicking. I made my own picks from 16d nails nails hammered out on an anvil. Then, I started duplicating keys the same way... I had a broken ignition key to my truck and no spare or way to get one. I lived an hour from a McDonald's - That is how country I grew up. 8-) I'd hammer a nail flat, clamp it to a broken key or just a key with vise grips, then cut it using a triangle file. If you think those hide-a-key rocks etc are nifty, imagine putting a nail key in a deck, board etc. with just the head exposed, no one would ever find it. ~TLDR~ Years later, my son is in college and tells me that he bought some lockpicks and really wanted to get involved in locksport. I asked him "When did you get interested in that?" He told me that when he was 9, his grandfather, my father-in-law, passed away and the family needed in his Vietnam memento cabinet that no one had keys to. I saved the day... And, he has been fascinated ever since. Apparently he tried for years to pick the tons of locks I have. I just collected them because I love them mechanically and wasn't really into picking anymore. So, even when you don't really think kids are paying that much attention or think what you are doing is cool, that might not be the case. Both of my kids, son and daughter are into locksport now. I have been teaching them and some of their friends how locks work, how to make tools, lockpicking at the university where I work etc. We even have local parts stores save us used windshield wipers for the inserts too. After my father passed away, I inherited his locks from the farm and the obligatory drawer of keys that all farms seem to have... Some of them fit, some of them worked... but I restored them all because they are such great pieces of engineering, even before I got back into locksport. You are 100% right that thieves don't pick locks. I am quite good and can get into locks in seconds but I do them as puzzles. A thief will just bash them with a hammer typically. Even the top secret ninja locks that say they are impervious to a grinder can be defeated in seconds... Bolt cutters to the hasp, instead of the shackle, work almost instantly for a bad actor. Thanks my friend, you made my day with this video!

Hello Jason! I don't think the average person appreciates just how spectacular the padlock is, to design a devise that can stay locked and open with only a small lightweight key... Amazing. Also the fact that their tolerances are so tight yet they work in all types of weather is fascinating to me... The best part about Lockport is it teaches patience... You have to have that to do well in that hobby. Once I had a lady ask me to install a medico lock on her front door... The door was French door with 18 glass panes... LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!

The stories and bygone information are what make your videos what they are. Keep up the good work. You may know this, but I seem to recall that Master put all their TV advertising budget into one commercial. Super Bowl Sunday with the rifle shot hitting the lock in slow motion with the tag-line: “and the lock did not open”. Remember that?

Damn. Bosnian Bill and LPL got me started doing all that picking. Of the 2; LPL is by far the better picker. That guy can get in ANYTHING! Both are miles ahead of me. I'll say this; some of my antique Yale's are far more difficult to pick than a modern day lock. Those things were made like tanks. Very narrow keyway, too. I just got 2 more off Ebay, yesterday. They're 1920's to 30's. Somewhere in that time frame. Good show, today!

I have a big canvas bag I bought at an army surplus store and it is full of padlocks and a couple of door locks. It is amazing how many padlocks one collects over the years without meaning to. All the keys are there except one. It is a Master padlock attached to a heavy guage steel plate with a hole in it, 3" by 5 1/2". I was taking a mathematics course at UC Davis near Sacramento and had to have a parking sticker. My car was an MG Midget with a cloth top and a bumper that was too small to really work with the big parking sticker. So they had these plates for sale for people with motorcycles. So I got a lock and would lock it to the steering wheel. So now I'm going to pick it and then take it in to get keys made.

Back in 1984 I work at a place that used dozens of Master locks, we used to order them in bulk, all the same number, so the same key worked for all of them. My Dad used to tell me to only use graphite to lubricate locks. He would explain that oil binds dirt and some oil can freeze. He is old school, does not like to change with the times.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 4 жыл бұрын
Actually Graphite was the preferred lubricant for locks! The only problem is when Graphite is used it can't be used with anything else... You start with a bone dry clean core and add graphite and only graphite... fine! However once oil or any other fluid gets on the core the graphite gets gummy and makes a real mess.. Most locks made today are oiled from the factory so if you add graphite you can have problems... The really good locks I think come shipped with Graphite already... I have a couple mechanisms that only use graphite! =D Plus it's good in freezing weather!

That was a fun video. I have a few locks but I really don't collect. At the hospital I would find locks when people would leave and clean out their lockers and leave the lock So instead of scraping them I would bring them home. I have one special one that belonged to my father-in-law. Doesn't have a key but very ornamental. Sence it was his I should clean it up and see if I can get a key made. Then give it to my son. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

John, I've noticed you don't use a bandsaw much in your shop. I bought one because other fabricators and restorers use them constantly. I've had mine for about a year and I use it seldom. Its unnecessary. Anyway, on Wednesday I decided to use mine to trim a piece of 4 inch thick walnut stock to make a bowl on my new wood lathe. I was trimming the corners when the blade bound up. My fingers we 3 inches from the blade which i thought was a safe distance. I tried to push the wood thru the bind with force. When it finally did give way, the 3 inches closed up faster than I thought possible. My left thumb fell victim to the now freed up blade. It was severed 2/3 of the way through with the pad of my thumb taking the brunt of the damage. It fortunately didn't sever the bone, but a trip to the ER, many stitches, injections, x-rays, bandages, antibiotics, and a very angry wife have made me put my bandsaw up for sale on Craigslist. I implore your viewers to rethink the need for these tools. I've gotten along fine for 50 years without one, and I've never had an injury like this. I'm a 'safety first' kind of guy and its been a good philosophy, but im done with bandsaws. I wish i could share the pics, because they really show the damage these things can do.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 4 жыл бұрын
John- My friends father was a master machinist and could make anything out of metal however one day he was at a big do all bandsaw and the same thing happened to him and he lost the tip of his finger! Those saws are notorious for that and many times we should be using push sticks but we don’t and this is all part of working in the shop, the machines always are trying to injure you and they save a lot of time but they all can have their dangers too. Thank God you didn’t lose a finger or worse! 😃👍

Ending credits: When I was in Portland, Oregon in the late '90s there were groups of "Lost Boys" that formed families. Some were live and let live but others were pretty agressive. They would carry a master combination lock on a chain as a weapon and they were called ,"Smilies", because if you got hit by one it would leave a semi circular mark that looked like a smile. Kinda like the mark the Phantom would leave on the bad guys in the comics.

Thanks for the video and tips. I used this method today to clean up a handful of old Master No. 3 padlocks and it worked great. The only trouble is that I was going from memory and I forgot to vacuum the locks before using 50/50 solution. Also, I forgot to spray Tri-Flo at the end. I didn't clean my keys on the wire wheel because I thought the wire wheel might damage them. The keys look like they're made of brass and they have the lion's head on them. Suggestions for cleaning the keys?

@ScoutCrafter I have always wondered why so many people on the TV are locked in a room. After near 60 years of poking holes through walls and patching holes in walls. If you are locked in an average home today a determined 8 year old could put their foot through the wall and walk out. I found a stray dog on my way home from work. Scrawny, matted, looked half dead. I brought him home and named him Jack. In a effort to keep him from running off before I could get him in better shape I put him first in the pump house. He chewed the frame out of the window and was sitting on the porch when I got home. I put him in the workshop. The loft had the exterior wall made of 3/4" poplar and 1/2" plasterboard on the inside. He was curious and chewed through the poplar and the plasterboard. I didn't use the upstairs much so I didn't notice for near a week. Then I realized he was civilized and didn't want to poop where he lived. The upstairs didn't have a flush toilet so he just left the stuff for me to clean up. Locks slow and honest man down. A determined dog will just blow right past them. 🥴😎

I like locks I'm going to have to try some of those chemicals you used. I took the Foley/Belsaw locksmithing course back around 1982. I did a few jobs but, never really got the business going. Now, I'm retired. I wonder if I could use lacquer thinner instead of acetone with the transmission fluid? I know it would dissolve a plastic container but, the smell of lacquer thinner is far less objectionable to me. I usually, blow out locks with compressed air to remove dirt and cleaner.
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave! The lacquer thinner might have the same effect as the acetone... Try the vacuum instead of compressed air, the later tends to blow the dirt up into all the nooks and crannies of the lock and can create a problem. The 50/50 works wonders! Thanks!!!!!!

That list clip cracked me up. I know somewhere there is a brass lock that my father had in the navy. I think it was a Yale. Great tips as usual for maintaining something we use all the time. Are those brass Master Locks hard to find?

Finally got my S&G 831B.. Cleaned the lube out and it wouldn't turn anymore.. Even with the wrong lube, it will stop the sidebar from doping in.. Gotta use Fluid film for Medeco.. (Thats what Medeco recommends anyway, lol)

Medeco locks are on a whole different level... I show some people a medico key and they aren't impressed then I tell them to look again from the top! They see the angled cuts and wonder how the heck do you cut those? LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!

Hi Scoutcrafter, great vid as always. Do you ever have problems with the 50/50 leaking out the spout of the spray bottle? I have yet to find a spray bottle, including the zep that won’t leak out the spout in between uses.

Brett! YES!!! I think it has to do with the Acetone expansion and contraction! Here is what I do- Only fill the bottle half way and store in a can just Incase! 😃👍

I have a "77" that I've had for 30 years, and I have no key. Can a locksmith cut a key for one of these locks. I dought that I would ever use it, but a key would be nice..
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely however the only problem is in today’s day and age labor costs are pretty high and I know I have a local locksmith in my town that is thinks he should live in Beverly Hills for the prices he charges for simple operations! The key is if you can find a reasonable locksmith they can make a key for the padlock or you can go on the forum like lock picking forum or lock collecting forum and there are usually hobbyist that will make a key for your lock as long as you cover shipping in a small charge for the blank.

Locksmith can make a key but you need an old time locksmith. Some of the newer ones want to charge by the hour and it will cost a pretty penny!

Why dont you use dry graphite lube when i repair doorlocks thats my go to that and aerokroil i might have to try the 50 50 ill have to change it to 50 60 though that way i can tell my boss i gave it 110% lol
@ScoutCrafter
@ScoutCrafter 4 жыл бұрын
Aero Kroil is great but the 50/50 works just as good and cost pennies to make! So easy! The only thing is it tends to separate so a quick shake before using is needed... As for the graphite, I have like 5 pounds of powdered graphite that I got in bulk but I never liked using it in locks... It doesn't seem to last and can get gummy. I tried it many times but so far try-flow is my favorite... =D Thanks!!!!!!!
@rushley5813
@rushley5813 4 жыл бұрын
@@ScoutCrafter it does have a tendency to get gummy especially when paired with wd40 might go with just the 50 50 then and find some of that lube you used
