Come with me as we go down the rabbit hole on one of my new favorite flintlock designs and how we get it in firing order and make it look a little closer to the original as well as just making it look really macaroni in general.

Picked up an Indian Short Land Bess years ago that had the touch hole drilled way low in the pan. Was able to set up my tapping size hole on a tangent with the low hole and set a good liner in correct position for ignition. The best thingabout these India pieces is they are majority forged .

Boy. I can't wait to see what you do to finish this one then take 'er one out for a round or two. She seems like a nifty little piece. On a side note, after stripping the wood on mine I like to hit the stock with a torch to darken the grains then go back over it with with stain then a final coat of linseed oil/bees wax mix. I was also thinking of trying an ebonizing technique to darken the blond spots, if it has them.

Yeah, the smaller touch holes are kind of a thing. You're going to see more on rifles. Things like carbines and muskets actually have larger touch holes for a faster lock time and more reliable ignition

You can knock the chrome shine off the barrel & other steel parts by soaking them in vinegar for a few hours. Wrapping the barrel in a towel & soaking the towel with vinegar works well for getting the patina equal over the whole barrel. You may want to be cautious if you plan on using this method on the lock assembly and hammer because the springs and hammer are tempered or hardened.

Why would the ram rod not have threads on one side? Have to clean it in the field somehow.
@Real11BangBang
@Real11BangBang 4 ай бұрын
That would be because this is a captive ram rod, the big button on the end is actually not for loading. It is so you can grab a hold of it. The other end is the actual ramming end. Therefore, no room for threads

I appreciate the little details that you pointed out, to include ones that you *could have* gotten into but didn't for this build. I love hearing the little details of the art of these guns. There are so many intentional touches to them! Looking forward to more for sure! Anyone else who's interested in similar material should also check Duelist1954 for his builds. I have a question, how practical do you find the cavalry draw for a 7.5/8" revolver on foot? Is there some wiggle room in how the holster sits and the angle at which you draw the pistol for when you sit in a chair and so on? Thanks, fellows. I appreciate your practical experience! 👍

I own a Heritage M1777/IX French Cavalry Carbine in .69 cal. It is a beautiful work of Art. However it is impossible to aim from the shoulder due to the geometry of the Buttstock. I found a photo of an original that had the buttstock hollowed out as a cheek piece to be able to aim from the shoulder. I am guessing that may have been done by an American. I can only surmise that French Cavalry would have used a carbine sling and fired from waist up close and personal at British Infantry Squares. What do you think about this?
@Real11BangBang
@Real11BangBang 5 ай бұрын
So the 1777 AN IX CARBINE FOR CAVALRY would have came from the factory with The cheek piece scallop cut out of it. All of them had it so if you wanted to cut that out of the stock yourself you would actually be making the gun more historically accurate

did you scrub the barrell when you got it? alot of times these thing have metal shavings and cuting oil in the barrel. we generally remove the barrel from the stock then clean it thoroughly with acetone dont get it on the wood. then very lightly oil it and your ignition will get better. other wise it will take around 50 shots to burn that cutting oil clear out.

Probably worse than shooting a ball because a minie bullet will tumble due to lack of rotation which would have been imparted by rifling.

Oh don't worry. There will be a video coming out here before too long. That will be extremely in depth. So far all I have on it is a KZbin short and it just was not enough time to cover the history of the gun. The only place I'm really find information on these things is from the Royal armories website and pistols and carbines of the Napoleonic war book. But there is a lot of history with these little guns and nobody has ever covered it. I don't even think they have a Wikipedia page for it and that's pretty sad considering it was the standard issue British Carbine during the battle of Waterloo

Hey guys Ive been having this very odd issue with some ammo ive been shooting. Its 45 colt with 40 grains swiss 3f under a 250 grain bullet. Im shooting it out my 7.5in SAA. I use a classic lee loader to make this ammunition. The problem that I have is the last time I shot a batch of 100 I had lead blowback and hit me. And I found some bullets and they were .32 caliber and over an inch long. I weighed them and they were 20-30 grains lighter than a standard bullet. Its really confusing. I had found another one from a time before that had went through a tree and it was 40 caliber and was 30 grains lighter and only a little bit taller. I dont know whats happening. The only thing I can think of is that im over crimping. I havent had the blowback issue before so I just think that was from over crimping. But I dont know why the bullets are mushrooming. Its soft lead. Those abnormaly thin and long ones were from the really over crimped batch that caused blowback

What I get out of this is that this manufacturer does shoddy work. All these reproduction’s are expensive making the sport / Hobby prohibitive and intimidating for most people . Its like lifestyles of the rich. Evidently there is no quality control at headquarters and the Indians of colonial times were being furnished superior arms of regulation quality at affordable prices. With all the tools and knowhow of modern invention this company still could not get it right. Imagine buying a home and discovering that complete buffoons had botched the plumbing and electrical forcing You to wait for everything to be rectified. I can buy a beautiful Henry Golden Boy for a fraction of the price. Who cares if You have to wait a couple of weeks. That time can be spent making money or enjoying time with the kids. If the workmanship on this company’s arms is any indication of what their marriages are We can assume that someone else must finish the job they couldn’t
