I’ve been told by local people I know that I sound pretty much like a native English speaker and that there are hardly any flaws in my sentences but even then I guess that’s not enough to give me confidence to spit the words out. But when you guys mentioned that foreigners probably don’t speak my language I was like “heeeeyyy they’re right no one can judge my English if they can’t speak a single word from my language”

Just speak. The more you speak, the faster you get better. Eventually grammar and pronunciation will come naturally. The point is to build up your confidence first.

These tips are great for practicing speaking in any language. I wish I had had this kick in the pants before being on a Zoom call with a friend and his very supportive friends, two of whom I've met before, who were all speaking Japanese. Since my knowledge of their language is less than that of a toddler (not being self-deprecating, it's factually accurate), I had no confidence to use what little Japanese I know; it was so intimidating and overwhelming. Next time, I'll (maybe) remember Sam's pep talk and will try to engage with them in Japanese. One day, maybe I'll even be really brave and talk to one of the doctors at work in Korean.

To speak proper Mancunian you need to drop the letter 'y' from the end of a word. You can pronounce it as 'eh' as in the 'e' in the word 'bet'. e.g. jelleh (jelly). The letter 'r' rarely exists anywhere other than at the start of a word and should be dropped in most other positions (there are exceptions e.g. bruvva (brother), arse and arrogant - which is not necessarily a reflection on my male sibling). If a word ends in 'er' you say it as 'oh' like the O in 'loch' or as in the primary school alphabet 'o' not as in "oh no!" e.g. Manchestoh. You have to drop the letter 't' in the middle of any word. E.g. tattoo becomes ta-oo with a bit of a glottal stop in between syllables. Vowels have to be elongated, so star becomes staaaaaaa. An exception to this can be the letter 'a' when it is pronounced as in the word 'cat' that everybody in England can say, but southerners pronounce it as 'aahh' as in 'glaahhs' (glass) and 'graahhs' (grass). This means that males in the south cannot have a 'wank' and must instead 'maahhsturbate'. Combine some of these rules e.g. in the word 'party' and you get paaaaa-eh. I'm not surprised foreigners find learning English hard - and don't get me started on Scouse, Geordie, Glaswegian, Irish, Welsh, Cornish or Brummie accents. Good luck conversing in Great Britain!

I'm South African and the majority of us have a tendency of making fun of somebody who makes a mistake in their English especially when they are delivering a speech or just talking in general. Toxicity has made us believe that we are better than everyone if we have a good English and that doesn't sit well me at all.

I’m fluent in English, but delivering speeches is hard since I’m so shy. So, I mess up my wording and yeah people do make fun of that. It hurts. I’m sorry you had to go through that. Also don’t let people get to you. Their just a holes. Who have nothing better to do then make someone feel bad.

This reminds me on how everyone criticised Jacob Zuma when he incorrectly pronounced a huge number. And that is completely understandable since his home language is not English, but is isiZulu (if I am not mistaken) and the way you pronounce numbers in Zulu and in English are completely different. And let us be honest, everyone struggles to pronounce numbers higher than 10000.

Speak speak speak! 😆 also in my highschool we used to practice reading out loud excerpts from a novel or news article. It helps to train pronunciation and speaking dialogues without the extra effort to actually think up what to say. Kinda like the in between level of difficulty before jumping in straight to natural conversation. I agree that we shouldn't feel too worried about getting it wrong. It would be a nice practice too to ask your speaking partner to re-confirm what they understand from your sentences. Happens to me all the time even in professional setting! A consultant we're working with is from Thailand, and we're Indonesian. English is foreign language for both parties. To avoid miscommunication, when there's something we don't quite understand, both parties spend extra time to re-confirm each of our intents, most often and most easily through drawings (we're on construction business).

Confidence really is the key. Honestly, I get frustrated sometimes when my students refuse to speak just because I’m requiring them to speak english if they want to say something. In my country, the Philippines, english is the second language. In government agencies, bank transactions, academe and pretty much every transaction you do in the philippines are in english. Even documents are mostly, if not all, in english. However, people are afraid that they might commit mistake and they will be laughed at. The mindset is that, if a person speaks fluent english, he/she is smart. They view english as a sign of intelligence. Plus, we cannot deny the fact that many people are judgemental(honestly, I also laugh at my supervisor if she commits grammatical errors). Building your confidence to speak is really hard. I don’t know if I’m making any sense, though. Anyway, I like your channel. 😊😊😊

Hi guys, great video and an amazing suggestions. I was born in Brazil, came to 🇺🇸 when I was 7yo. I quickly had to learn English. A lot of speaking, practicing and interacting with others to learn. I still make mistakes sometimes after being in 🇺🇸 for over 20+ years. Love your all’s videos. 🤗

I think the most important aspect when learning how to speak English is through practice because practice makes perfect. Don’t be shy or felling dejected if you make mistakes. Try speaking in English with people around you who can speak the language. The more mistakes you make the better you will become because you learn from your mistakes. Hopes this helps and btw where is John today?

In UK English we spell it 'practise' for the verb and 'practice' for the noun.

The misconception is that practice makes perfect. It doesn't...It makes permanent. That's why it's always better to learn from a native speaker when at all possible. Repeating other peoples mistakes can make them part of your own language usage. Finding ways to emulate native language speakers is always going to have better results. Even if you pick up on the improper usage that is becoming more and more common among native speakers.

Also, at least in America, people like people with accents. It is a good conversation starter! Just remember, everyone has an accent. There is no "accentless" English. Most people I know would rather have someone speak in their "natural" accent rather than try to not have an accent. I have to admit, not judging them, but for some reason it is off putting if an accent sounds like the "internet accentless English" that doesn't have a place. I would much rather hear English with a Korean (or any other) accent.

Grammar is not important! This should be something that most Filipinos must learn. Filipinos tend to judge a person who speak a broken English or a grammatical wrong sentence. Also, accent is not important. As long as you pronounce the word right or at the very least you communicate your thoughts, then that is fine. Accent and pronunciation will develop as you learn how to speak the language. The more you practice, the more your accent or pronunciation becomes better.
