What a fun topic and video! There are so many phrases ("going out"), idioms (have a "crush"), and euphemisms ("sleeping" with) in the dating and relationship realm that you guys could make a series of these. It would be interesting to hear if and how any of these expressions exist in Korean culture, and how the courting/dating norms differ between English-speaking countries and Korea. If I might offer a constructive suggestion, in the spirit of this being a learning channel, to consider updating the title to say "vocabulary" instead of "vocabularies". Vocabulary is one of those tricky English collective nouns. A vocabulary is a list, set, or collection of words and phrases. Vocabularies (plural) would refer to more than one set of words. In this case, the topic is about one set of words that relates to dating and relationships, so "Vocabulary and Expressions on Dating & Relationships" would be more clear. I enjoy this channel and the team who make it possible, so I hope that feedback is helpful.

As an American, I'd love to know what the perspective is concerning exclusivity and dating in Korea. Is it different than what our perspectives on it are?
@lifeofjohn39934 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's definitely different. There are a lot of subtle differences but in regards to exclusivity it's a bit more cut and dry here. Typically by the third date people have that talk about what they are to each other. Basically you get two, maybe three dates to decide on going steady or not and then after that you either stop dating or become official. Open relationships are also extremely rare.

DTR= define the relationship. When you are in a sticky situation and need to figure out if you are casual or exclusive. Usually you don't say this to the person you are dating, but to a friend when they are dating but unsure hot serious. "Girl.. you need to DTR!"

We use the term "taken" a lot. E.g., She's already taken. This means that someone is already off limits or someone is exclusively dating someone or someone is in a relationship. "Lead someone on" in my country may translate to "paasa" which means giving someone hope or implying but there's no hope in fact :( This term may be use not exclusively on relationship. "You can only be a friend" (John, 2020). This is a good description of friendzone. Chemistry means you're a good fit or you're a good mix. Bad chemistry means bad mix.

Ah, in my day :-).....being exclusive was equal to "going steady". The guy usually asked the girl and then she would wear his high school class ring wrapped with lots of fuzzy yarn because it would obviously be too big for her :-D. Or she could wear it around her neck. And if he didn't have a class ring yet (we got ours as juniors in high school) then he could give her a ring from a "bubble gum" machine that had very cheap jewelry in it. When I was in eighth grade I got one of these but I broke his heart and told him I didn't want to go steady :-). Oh, and you didn't have to date a lot to go steady; a guy could just ask out of the blue.
@lifeofjohn39934 жыл бұрын
I don't think people do that these days huh? No more fuzzy rings....

Sometimes mature or older persons who are still single and dating or maybe a widow or divorcee👨👩..it can sound odd or awkward to call each other "boy"-friend and "girl"-friend."👦👧 For example, my Aunt started dating a guy when she and he were 50+ yrs of age. So, instead of introducing him as her "boyfriend," she would call him, "My Significant Other" or "My Beau."
@jakeryan45454 жыл бұрын
Also partner (if a serious relationship). This was usually in the third person, but I feel like the opposite of beau, would be lady friend. As in "your uncle is inviting his lady friend to the BBQ, what is her name again?"

Is "friendzone" still a controversial term? I remember a time pretty recently when people assumed "friendzone" was a complaint based on an expectation of a relationship that was "owed" to them, and those who used it would get attacked for it. Is it now acceptable to use the term?
@adamwarlock14 жыл бұрын
I think using it descriptively is okay ("I was in the friendzone, so I moved on"), but talking about how to avoid it or get out of it can get unpleasant because it sounds like the speaker is trying to trick someone into being attracted to them.
@lifeofjohn39934 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think its based on context now. I think it definitely can be used in a derogatory way but doesn't have to be. However, I still tend to not use it in my everyday life

@@lifeofjohn3993 I saw a pretty good comedy sketch somewhere where a woman shifts a man to the "benefits zone". I.e. she'll get physical with him, but doesn't wan't talk to him, eat with him, or be seen with him, and he decides he was happier in the "friend zone". (Can't find it now of course.)

In the Philippines, we call it "courting." Here if you say "you're dating someone" it means you're already A COUPLE a.k.a. dating exclusively so when we were introduced to the Western dating culture (via American TV and Movies), it was somehow a shock. LOL. So here if you're dating different people it already means it's cheating. But I guess things are changing now and we're slowly adapting to the Western style of dating.
