Our best passive aggressive phrase in the southern US is "Bless your heart". It can be said with a tone that really means "you are an idiot " or in a tone that is sincere. It's a guessing game!!!! Lol

@NsTheName

@@arydimitri3100 A lot of it has to do with tone, which unfortunately makes it difficult. What I will say is that there are plenty of American's who won't take offense when it comes from someone who is not a native English speaker. I would just automatically assume that, that person just doesn't know that it CAN be sarcastic and move on. But if someone says it in a way that sounds like they're bored, that's a pretty good sign they're being sarcastic. A lot of people will say other things like, "That's awesome!" "You're doing great." "Well done." "I'm really happy for you."

@@NsTheName I have to agree with you there, as a scottish person, I hear a lot of sarcasm from people, mainly friends but a lot of brits can over step this specific line, but it just depends on the context as well as the underlying message behind it, I use 'Good for you' as both encouragement and sarcasm, I think it just depends on how it is said and the events of today but usually I will add a word before 'good' so it isn't taken as sarcasm like: 'That's good for you' or 'That will be good for you'

One of my FAVORITE ways of being passive aggressive is when I'm chatting on a messaging service (mostly fb messenger) and I'm having.... Shall we say a heated discussion with someone, and then I'll just react to their last message with a thumbs up. It's SUPER passive aggressive and petty but sometimes you just have to do it.

i think it's very interesting how 'uhum' can be used, in my country it depends on the tone and the lenght... like a short 'uhum' is just agreeing (when someone tells a story and you want to assure you're listening / want them to know you're on their side for example) and a long 'uuhuummm' would be aggressive!

If I’m annoyed but don’t want to express it, I say “oh really”, but instead of raising the pitch of the last syllable like it’s a question I do it to the middle one. So i say “oh REAlly”. Via text, if I stop using emojis it means I’m annoyed. Even using an angry emoji means I’m less annoyed than the same angry message with just no emojis at all

We have a saying in the south where it can be used in passive aggressive way or in sincere way and that saying is " oh bless your heart". Depends on contexts of the sentence; whether you just did or said something stupid then you will hear "bless your heart" meaning "I'm sorry your so stupid", but if someone close just passed away, you been sick or hurt then it would be sincere. My friends tend to use "good for you" or "lovely" when someone they don't like starts bragging about something.

I think sarcasm can easily be expressed by dragging, and holding out your words. Like, "Yeaah, riiiight"..."Oh, reeealy?" "Nooo, I don't get it." My favorite passive-aggressive phrase I learned from an older Gentleman. I even heard him say this to his wife! You have to say in a lite, upbeat tone... "Well, sounds like a personal problem!" ...And then smile, nod your head and walk away! Lol😂 I use it all the time now. It actually works great. Most people take the hint and think it's kinda funny and I happily let myself off the hook.😄👍 Some of my co-workers and family members are starting to use it back at me!

The British should trademark passive aggression for the many clever and witty ways of delivering a remark or retort. The classic British delivery of a passive aggressive comment is deadpan (sans facial expression). "Are You Being Served?" is an old British comedy which used passive aggression as an comedic art form. I find British wit very entertaining and catching Sam's one-liners, quips, and expressions (which are always well within the boundaries of professionalism, just funny) is one of the main reasons I enjoy this channel. Sam represents his country well in this regard, especially when it comes to the friendly rivalry with "American John". Clearly they're still mad about the tea.

@lifeofjohn3993
@lifeofjohn3993 3 жыл бұрын
There is some crossover between verbal irony/sarcasm/passive aggressive phrases. Passive aggressive, however is really focused on the aggressive part. You intention is to show your annoyance and/or displeasure with the listener. Verbal irony, however, can be any sort of phrase where you say one thing but mean another. It doesn't have to show aggression to a listener. Example: This weather is fantastic! (when it's rainy and windy out). To sum up: Passive aggressive is showing aggressiveness to the listener Verbal irony just means you say one thing but mean something different
