I feel like when the wait staff comes to ask how everything's going it's less of them wanting to know how much you like the food and more an opportunity to ask for an extra fork or sauce or something like that

This was fun. I love these. It's interesting how even though all the English-language countries can have such varied slang words or just different words for things in general, we all generally seem to be the same in terms of a lot of big Cultural things; not all of course (thinking about the often-maligned "friendliness" of Americans and us Californians specifically vs the UK for example...lol), but a lot :)

I like saying something about the meal if it's not good but doing it in a nice, respectful manner. I figure that the restaurant should know if something doesn't taste good. I did that one time, can't remember the restaurant, but the waitress was very appreciative and said that several customers had commented that this particular dish did not taste good. I don't do this often but just when something is really off.

Generally speaking, older folks will tend to give more of an honest assessment in order to get the food changed or fix what is wrong if it is not too much trouble. After all, the cost of eating out is too costly to not have the order be right. That being said, interaction in a restaurant is more of a nuance, requiring understanding by the reading of the other person's demeanor and bearing. I guess we pay attention to the context of the service and feel free to express if there is a problem with the food, although it is more likely that we just let it pass. Tipping? You and all your brothers worked as servers in your early days, and likely you know that the suggested amount to tip here is 18%, and so we tip 20%, and we always tip even if the service is terrible, if only to let the server have the opportunity to think about how we were treated. We have never been to South Africa or Australia but last fall we were in the UK for three weeks (loved it). Most wait staff were good, a few were no so good. Still, we learned quickly that the bill included tipping automatically and at 20% and would only leave a bit more if the service was exceptional.

Hello Mr. Chanbers. Alway appreciate your comment:) Tipping in America is really high, Thank god we don't have to tip in Korea :)
@craigchambers41834 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it! In our country servers the business considers their tips to be part of their wages and the government agrees by taxing their tips as wages, so the businesses do not pay the workers enough or a living wage, just the minimum.

As a former server in the US I definitely agree on the age thing and complaining. It is also funny because when you serve plates that are hot and say to the table "careful plates are hot", the older men always have to touch the plate, even if they have no need to move it, just to prove they can handle it!

It is awkward to tell the server something isn’t quite right, but I think we should politely tell them so it can be corrected. Most servers want the customer to have a quality experience, if they don’t they are in the wrong job.
@lifeofjohn39934 жыл бұрын
Yeah when I worked as a server I liked people who politely said what they disliked ha ha, but like Walter said overly honest people can be too much

I used to work in a restaurant, so I will always give my true opinion on how the food is. I’m considered a young thing here in my town. I never thought that it could be considered rude.

HI, Great Video as always. It is awesome to see your video as soon as i woke up. One time I went to restaurant and didn't like any of the food we've ordered.I tried to use different sauce to mask the flavor. It just didn't work at all so, I called the waiter and said that the taste is not quite good. He just said ok, No apologies, nothing and just left to attend another table. I was like I'm never coming here. Did You guys had any similar experience or bad customer service?

wow that must have been terrible. it happens a lot in Korea as well. But we have a great app service with many reviews to read before we actually get into the restaurant. It really helps!

When they come and ask how the meal is, They are giving you a chance to add to the order, with drinks or more chips or such, without you going to the trouble of getting their attention or not even bothring about. W: How is your meal, everything to your liking? C: Great thanks, can I get another beer and my abc will like some chili sauce...

English education in Korea seems so ridiculous, I haven't learned to say "Table for two please" at a restaurant in school. All they teach in public education throughout the 12-year period is how to pick the right answer after skimming convoluted texts.
