Traditional weddings are really fun. Spot on Chantelle. The outfits, singing and dancing in the streets is so cool. You can gate crash and no one will judge. Everyone is invited. PS… Jo’burg and Pretoria streets are purple. The Jakaranda trees are looking beautiful!! 💜

I learned the most about Afrikaans weddings, even if Chantelle couldn't cover every culture. It sounds fun and colorful! John should have mentioned Las Vegas weddings, justice of the peace weddings, drive through chapels, and some of the UNusual variations. And maybe a comment on the food, bands, and the huge cost! A couple of the big budget weddings that I went to were very exciting, but the marriages fizzled, and lasted only a few months. Others were super casual, and they are still happily married, many years later.

In South Africa the leading to the wedding is so long especially in Zulu tradition. The Guy has send a letter to woman father, organize his uncles to go for negotiation for Lobolo which might be cows or money and after that they have to bring gifts to bride parents and extended family 30 blankets, dress up the bride head to toe, goats or sheep and so many more. Then after the bride has to go groom family to thank Lobolo with groceries. Then comes the white wedding and traditional wedding # the bride family has to give a furniture for her house, slaughter a cow both families and the bride has to bring blankets maybe 40, grass mate and so many more to give groom family as a gifts. It's quite expensive but it's a tradition it must be done.

We had a outdoor snoek Braai wedding where my wife dressed up as Lara Croft and I was Indiana Jones. It was held at our church with a massive bon fire.

I've been a brides maid so many times and I find it fascinating how different each wedding went down. I actually get sick at how much money gets spent on traditional American weddings. 😛 One thing I discovered, it's not how much $money you spend but what you choose to spend your money on that makes the wedding a success.

One thing during Afrikaans weddings, is during the Groom's speech. All the young men (most of the time) drag their chairs to directly in front of the groom and deliberately try to disrupt his speech as much as possible. Chairs scraping, lots of questions, maybe some coughing. But it is all in good fun. The really take the mickey out of him.

Here in the Philippines, the tradition of money being pinned to the clothes of the bride and groom whilst dancing (this is already during the reception) is still very much alive in most of the provinces...

My 2 cents again. With regarding the proposal and the wedding itself. It is usually case by case (nowadays) I mean like I got my ring in the garden with his family inside (mainly because we couldn't go to the beach. Stupid lockdowns -.-) For a lot of our weddings, they are usually themed if you're not super religious... I mean like mine is supposed to Lord of the Rings, D&D themed, because why the hell not. They are more fun when themed

Is eloping popular in other countries? In the states, each state can make their own requirements. Some (like Wisconsin) have a week waiting period, so you can get married the same day.
