Ryan, your ongoing conversation in this form opens a lot to the how the who and what is involved or how it effects so much in life, not just Thailand, not just travel or business, family, change and growth. You’re “doing you” in such a way that seeing you can inspire so many to remember, learn or choose to be more mindful as so much more is going on right now than we each can possibly process let alone what the reality of what intakes to be traveling and how much is navigated as one travels or makes a new life somewhere new. While its seems to be so much more that the Thai’s are encountering they also can see the waves of how people arrive and what goes on in other places or where people have come from and how it all. Changes t he world were living in. After all there is a lot that’s new, different and even truly threatening the lives of those who are traveling and encountering all that is new as well. As you’d know travel does many things and offers incredible experience that changes us all…. I’d add that we can all be more appreciative of who we encounter when traveling for they are working to make things available for those exploring and are part of what positive engagements can be experienced. Thanks for talking about it from your perspective and that of what you are talking with while on these trips and that of being just at home and how that continues for you and your family…… You’re a gem Ryan! Thank you

So refreshing, thank you. I am in the states and have watched foreigners come here and change due to western influence/rudeness. People that began quiet, polite/kind and then like a mental virus catch the mind set and everything becomes me, me, me. Sad to hear of anyone acting rudely in Thailand as I sense the reverence and kindness of the culture through your content. Simply isn’t any need to contaminate this sacred place.🙏🏻

I live in Costa Rica, 4 years now.. I applaud you for telling folks to drop their bullshit and entitlement when in other spaces. We do not go to others places to live the same way... It's a journey to embracing other cultures, their way of doing and living and yes... you can still share your customs and be yourself but you have to drop the expectation that you are going to change the way people live and are to match what you grew up learning and knowing. Life can be an amazing adventure so if you are going to visit and live somewhere else... embrace the new and different and remember to to take breath!

Its funny how Thais remember people. I have been coming 20 years now, live in UK married to a Thai. Years ago I learnt to kitesurfing in HH, I used to have a massage on the beach after the lesson and about two years later went back… as I was walking I hear this excited voice calling ‘Mr long hair come back’, yes the massage lady. I always buy food from same vendors and I always buy my dragon fruit from one lady, she always remember me but after 3 years away because of the ….demic I said to my wife she wont remember me… well as soon as she saw me she smiles and holds up three fingers because i always buy three, she excitedly talks to my wife then gave a 20 baht discount because she not see me long time! I always talk to and smile with Thais when the opportunity arises because they are such genuine people, from security men, food sellers, massage ladies or anyone that smiles and wants to chat. So different as you know from the west.

So true! Nothing so touching as being remembered after a few years likes it been only a couple weeks. In the Suan Plu neighborhood of Bangkok, a couple livelihood vendors greet me like I live just down the soi. I feel as if I'm not merely a regular US visitor, but a welcome friend. ❤️Warm and genuine. ❤❤❤Khon Thai!🙏🏻

They behave terribly in southern Europe as well. Lots of places the brits aren't welcome. Alot are binge drinkers and often cause issues. Seen this too many times to count. The younger generation is also very entitled and rude when abroad. I think many places should reintroduce visa requirements for brits. Its just to easy for their worst to travel abroad.

Very interesting video, Ryan! The issue is that people no longer strive to blend in. They’ve lost the mindset of inclusive travel and, regardless of what they call themselves, they remain tourists. One of the phrases I’ve included in my KZbin channel’s description is, "Don’t be a tourist, be a traveler!" Being a traveler is about more than just seeing the famous sights, like Pai - it's about diving into the local culture, it's about tasting new dishes, connecting with locals, and discovering hidden gems that don’t always make it into the guidebooks or websites. One of the highlights of my recent road trip in Thailand was having dinner at a small night market in the heart of Buriram. I was the only farang there, and while the locals were a bit surprised, they were incredibly welcoming. And the food? Absolutely amazing. It’s moments like these that I travel for!

Very sad 😢 the way Pai has turned out. Having lived in Pai for 10 yrs from 2005, I noticed so many changes in those 10 yrs, none for the better. Unfortunately all beautiful places get found & then over populated. I havent been back since i sold my property in about 2018. All I can say is I am very thankful that I experienced Pai in the good 'ol days , when the electricity went out all time, the music scene was amazing, no 711,s & life was slow & wonderful. I love your channel Ryan, keep on keeping it real. ❤

Tbf there were a couple of 7/11s in Pai in 2005, but I know what you mean. I used to own Pai River Hill (round the corner from Bamboo Bar) between 2005 and 2008 (when it burned down). Was an amazing experience but yeah, whenever I go back now, it's such a disappointing experience. Way too much development.

I previously lived in Pai and owned a shop on the main street for over 5 years. the biggest thing that has changed in Pai is the bar scene and the boom boom boom from music all night. I have stayed in Baan Suan many times know the owners pretty well. The owners have told us that the bars out on the street have driven almost all her customers away (including me). People that used to stay at her place for a week now only stay for one night and move on. The bars outside your bungalows draw all the after hours business and even though the locals complain, the police just come, accept bribes and leave the bars alone. It's sad because the locals in Pai are really great people and very easy to deal with. Our old Thai friends with small businesses are being pushed out by the noise and smoke. It's sad but I still know so many people up there We still have a good time.

Bangkok ( and maybe foreign) investors see profit and come in a buy out the local businesses. Easier to make profit selling booze in a nightclub to tourists that investing in anything else. I worked in Bali in the 90s as an English teacher and there it was non-Balinese money coming in and buying up all the rice padi. Of course some of the locals profited very well from the process.

I lived in Thailand for 16+ consecutive yrs..... 2004-2021 I lived far away from westeners in rural Thailand. Rural Thais are WONDERFUL! The few times I met up with friends in Pattaya over the years... I noticed Thais there were becoming much less graciuos and actually rude and defensive. We ALL blamed it on obnoxious westeners. Now back it the states ...the entire society here is CRUEL 'n TOXIC. ...and they think they er wonderful yet they've never experienced anything different then their own TOXICITY. I long for the graciousness and kindness of rural Thais and most Asians. You and your wonderful family ...stay safe and stay away from westeners if possible.

Hi Ryan great vlog as always. I’ve been to Pai twice in a 5 year time span and I too have noticed the differences of attitude from westerners then compared to now, they bring their arrogance and aggression with them, they think that they are better than the local people and it’s not only Pai where this is happening it’s anywhere that you find tourists !! You’re correct in saying that they need to leave this attitude back from whence they came !! Keep up with the great vlogs. Regards Steve.

I loved your conversation at the end of this video about dealing with Thai people. I'm a retired American living in Thailand and I have to say when I first got here during the first two weeks I did not treat thais well. I was under a lot of pressure to find a place to live and get my driver's license and open a bank account but that is no excuse for me being very short with people that were just trying to be nice to me. I remember a couple of times where I was very short with Thai women and they were visibly upset. I had no right to do that at all because I'm just a guest in their country. They do the absolute best that they can and take something going wrong very seriously. I went out of my way to find all of the people that I treated like that and did my best to make things right. If a traveler in Thailand sees that they are upsetting Thai people they should either figure out how to fix themselves or pack their bags, leave and never come back.

Great episode again Guru Ryan. Thank you. Obnoxiousness, rudeness, ego, privilege. The western young-uns with money have no sense of history, hard work, or humanity sometimes. My take is a false sense of superiority with their first world upbringing and money. I would simply refuse service, though Thais would likely never do that. Personally, think you should return as soon as you can, yet the train booking baht will be lost it seems. The reason, the rain is finally showing up, so you must have seen on the cell phone the approaching Typhoon causing torrential rains in Vietnam and then Thailand. Stay safe and dry as you can brother. Peace, Love, and Happiness Y'all

It seems many in the comments think Pai being full of hippies is the problem which is now how Ryan described it. It’s actually these so called hippies who stay long term here, partner with, and have excellent relationships with the Thais living here, working with the hill tribes etc. The problem is the mainstream young tourists who spend most of their evenings on walking street, stay in hostels where they do nothing but drink, walk around topless (men) and in bikini (women) in town, go on “tipsy tubing” on the river (arranged by Thais but condemned by the authorities?) etc. The so called hippie community are involved in many projects with Thai people, many don’t drink and they play music, do art, sit in singing circles together and do yoga (just to mention a few activities). Also Ryan, you aren’t old for Pai. I’m a 46 year old women who came here the first time 15 years ago, when I was in my early 30s and august live being here now too. There are plenty of things to do away from the mainstream booze tourism. 🙏🏼😊 There are many families who come to live in Pai which is beautiful.

I'm older travelled to Asia for 30years I've worked out the game I hang out by myself and enjoy my holidays I don't mix with other tourists or expats if someone wants to talk to me I will be friendly and have a short talk chat for 5 to 10 minutes than move on I don't get involved in other people's dramas and just enjoy my holidays I don't travel to get into fights and end up at a police station or hospital I'm only a geust so I respect the people and the country you learn these things with age 😊

I'm visiting Poland right now. indeed it is a bit sad. I know Thai smiles are a cultural thing as much as genuine warmth, but I find it nice to be in a culture that values such things above pretending to have a situation under control or whatever.

Loving the Pai series! Love from Japan! --- Same weird tourist stuff happening in Japan as well. Japanese and Thai people both do the gritted teeth smile even if they are upset. It would be nice if westerners would learn this technique.

You are 100% correct. As a westerner here in Thailand I feel we need to check attitude at passport control. Thailand is wonderful because it is Thai . No need to try to make Thailand conform to wetern norms. We are here because we love Thai way of life

Hey Ryan, great video my friend. I even enjoyed one of the advertising about wood working. I haven't been to the Northwestern part of Thailand yet but want to do some travels in that area. I'm thinking about getting a new Tuk-Tuk and fix it up so I can sleep in the back of it. I think I have to get a different licenses for driving a Tuk-Tuk though. This was for me one of your best video's. Thank you for doing it.

My wife and I drove up to Pai during the height of the pandemic and it was great, not an arrogant tourist in sight. No loud music, could just enjoy the sounds of nature. Beautiful place, and a real shame it’s been ruined 😢

Before you left home I was ambivalent about you leaving your family and Alphie. But this was very interesting. Chang Mai was too big but Pai was charming. Great place for anyone but especially young people beginning their lives before life gets more serious. I can't wait to see how Alphie greets you when you get home. Pets have no guile, no agenda, they love.

Ryan, I just discovered your video channel, and I am watching them. I have been in Chiang Khan for almost 3 years now. I retired and left the great state of Texas to visit my best friend who had been here for 5 years now. He and I have ridden motorcycles together since 1988, and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer 2 years ago. So, I decided to stay. Fell in love with Thailand and had to relearn a completely different attitude. When I was first here, I was driving my partner's truck, and this guy pulled out and almost clipped her vehicle. Of course, I reacted with some yelling and a few cuss words. When I was done, everyone in the truck was looking at me and my partner softly said, "we don't do that here. Jai Yen Yen." 🤣🤣 So now, I am the one offended by the rude behavior of farang in the area. I have become part of our neighborhood and accepted by the locals. I respect the culture, follow the law, and try to be a good citizen. That is all they expect from you. Take care.

I agree about your observations concerning Farangs visiting our home. More so in the last Two years, and I think we know why!!. Olso.. patience is a virtue Ryan and you have been spoilt living the quiet life in Buri Ram with your beautiful Family. So Sabai Sabai for your next few days and enjoy the rest of you Trip😂( and avoid Farang Hostels😊)

Great videos. Thanks for your continued efforts to provide the appropriate balance on KZbin content regarding Thailand. My thai wife and I live in South hua hin. I won't attempt to spell the district name as I don't have my readers. Anyway, I actively avoid most farang and tourist areas. I lived in cities with "That" mess, and I am not interested anymore. As for rude Westerners, what a surprise. Thankfully, thai citizens are mostly patient.

I was told once when renting a bike, the reason for no gas in the tanks was because the police told him and that if someone crashed into his rental business it could quite possibly cause many explosions thus destroying inventory and perhaps lives as well so they should have minimal gas on site...he gave us a card to take to the petrol station down the road where we could first fill for free...made sense...

Your attitude is so good and helpful to the foreigner who is dealing with Thai GF or thinking of having a Thai friend, gf or wife because the big gap between Thai culture and Farang culture. So I am a big fan of your channel.

Ryan I cannot agree more on attitude part. I am a Brit down in Mindanao and unfortunately have to say there are some parts of the Philippines I really would love to visit, but unfortunately I avoid to go there due to the negative western attitudes that gravitate to these areas. Unfortunately there are a certain set that act like 2 bob millionaires, and it’s disrespectful and obnoxious to see. By all means come enjoy, but please blend in and be chilled, I am sure you will have a 1000 times better experience.
