👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 is a GIFT for you. A PDF for The Top 10 Things to Know to Practice ERP for OCD, Phobias & Anxiety:
www.paigepradko.com/erp
It is difficult to perceive when you are in the middle of an episode of health anxiety that the disorder is a self-perpetuating cycle. But all anxiety disorders and OCD, including Health Anxiety are fed, maintained and reinforced by a self-perpetuating cycle. Your own behaviors or responses to your anxiety itself keeps the cycle going.
There are primarily 5 steps to the Health Anxiety Cycle:
Step 1: The cycle begins with noticing an unpleasant bodily sensation like a sore throat, palpitation or perhaps seeing a mole.
Step 2: Your brain interprets this sensation or visual as alarming and dangerous.
Step 3: Your anxiety and worry builds, and you become more hyper-vigilant and focus more on your sensations and how you are feeling.
Step 4: You try to calm yourself and attempt to bring your anxiety down. You begin to do certain behaviors like seek reassurance, check on your body status, avoid certain activities, or google information.
Step 5: Your behaviors from Step 4 have managed to bring your anxiety down a little. However, it is a trap. Now your brain believes the only reason you have survived is because you did those particular behaviors. Those behaviors have inadvertently reinforced the health anxiety cycle. And, you will most likely have similar urges to do those behaviors the next time that you find yourself feeling concerned about your health.
The good news is that there are several effective ways to BREAK the Health Anxiety Cycle.
Should you need help with your recovery from Health Anxiety, here is more information on my online therapy course:

health anxiety has been such a huge struggle for me for the past couple of years. i know that my worrying only makes it worse, but i can’t get the idea that “something is wrong” out of my head. learning to accept these worries and to not seek reassurance has been extremely challenging. i’m exhausted by my thoughts 😓

Yes, you describe health anxiety well. You will get the message that something is wrong. But, you will have to accept that that message is trying to grab your attention and wants you to do something. And yet, if you do ….do something…you are feeding the cycle. Response prevention means Not responding and not seeking reassurance. Yes, it can be so exhausting.

Wow, I found this video to be incredibly helpful, thank you so much. I experienced health anxiety only since I found my absolutely perfect love & life partner. Now it would be so horrible if that would be over. Before that I could always think of a better life. My partner is a former paramedic and can examine me professionally whenever I ask, it can calm me just a little in the moment, but it really does not help long term, I think this is one of the not recommended "safety actions" you talk about. ;) If I had the money, we would own a MRI and Ultrasonic already, now I think that would not help either. xD

Hi Paige, I have been going through depression and anxiety for almost a year now. Because of this I am going to see a therapist next month. But I came here to tell you something. That is, I am getting so many thoughts like what is the meaning of life?, why live and why die?, life is bad etc. I am getting at least 10 thoughts and feelings each and every day. I am getting so many thoughts and feelings which contain Negativity, self doubt, Fear, emptiness, physical pain, traumatic, meaningless, and also most of them are non sensible too. But at the same time, these thoughts and feelings are IMPORTANT for me too because I don't wanna ignore the brutal reality of this world. So I decided to tell these thoughts and feelings to my therapist But the problem is, 1. So as I am going to a therapist after a month I decided to write my thoughts and feelings on paper (as I saw on the internet that writing provides clarity) because I fear that I forget these IMPORTANT thoughts and feelings at the time when I need to tell them to my therapist. I don't wanna forget these. But as soon as I start to write my thoughts and feelings I start to overthink. It's like the more thoughts and feelings I write, the more continuous thoughts and feelings coming on my mind because of overthinking. So when I try to write those, my condition gets worse. So now, How do I tell those thoughts and feelings to my therapist without forgetting if i am unable to write them? 2. Also Paige, In recent weeks I forgot some of the thoughts and feelings that I had in my mind. So I fear that after therapy what if those "Forgotten" thoughts and feelings come later in my life and disturb me?

I’ve had IBS symptoms. Have become obsessed with looking at my poo. I feel so degraded every time. Never felt I’d feel shame about my #2 not looking as the chart says it should. I really never bothered me until… I googled it. Now my anxiety is ruining my life. I’ve scheduled appointment with specialist, but the fear of that appointment is now crushing me. What a lame situation. I’d ironically happily lick a dirty sidewalk if I could reassurance from that as opposed to Dr. I guess that means it’s them so am most of afraid of. I’ve watched so many videos on health anxiety now, and always seems the consensus on recovery is just acceptance, and facing you fears. If only it was a dragon, or something I had to face. I’ve had health anxiety for years and now I’ve recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. The anxiety and depression over it are putting me in a freeze state. I already have PTSD from the sudden loss of my daughter in 2015. I don’t fear dying I fear suffering and not being able to do the things I like and need for my mental health. Exercise and certain foods are a trigger for my condition so I recently had to stop all my activities and am on a strict autoimmune diet. It’s making me so depressed. How do we stop the cycle if we have a legit illness causing pain and other issues?

Hi Gina. I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this and your diagnosis and for the sudden loss of your daughter. Treating yourself with love and compassion is most important. Health anxiety persists when the fear is being reinforced through avoidance and safety behaviors like reassurance seeking, googling research, checking on symptoms. Health anxiety does affect people with and without medical diagnosis. We treat it by following the instructions of your medical provider but not adding to restrictions due to fear or being overly cautious and avoidant. It is indeed a challenge and I wish you the very best. If you need help, I have a course that you may find helpful: www.paigepradko.com/healthanxiety

What about addressing what caused rhe onset of the anxiety? That seems to be completely ignored...
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 2 ай бұрын
That’s a good point. I talk about the onset of OCD in a few different videos, but it can be different for many people. OCD can be brought on by a combination of genetics (biology) and having that genetics expressed through an experience. Often with health anxiety, but not for everyone, health anxiety is triggered by a traumatic event involving either their health or a loved one’s health crisis. However, even a virus can trigger OCD in someone and this is a condition called PANDAS. It’s a great suggestion to make video about onset. Thank you.

I have 2 electrophysiology cardiologist. I wore a Holter monitor for 1 month and was diagnosed with I.S.T inappropriate sinus tachycardia. Read about it if you are not familiar with it. Im on beta-blockers for heart-rate control its a non-life threatening condition its more benign but quality of life without medication or a cardiac ablation can be debilitating. Because your heart rate goes from 70s-180s back up and down. I still have a fear because of this I get PICS and PACs "palpitations " from the top and bottom of my heart but its not dangerous because ny echocardiogram is normal including my ejection fraction. So I still get anxious and anxiety and go drive and sit in my car near the emergency room in the parking lot whenever I feel strange till I feel better or if my blood pressure is slightly high. Slim, if you are interested, I created a course called, “Rapid Recovery from Health Anxiety”. I am very involved in the support group that accompanies the course and I think you would love that group. In the course I take you through step-by-step what I teach in therapy to help you recover. You would have to be motivated to get better, but it sounds like you are. You can find out more and register here: www.paigepradko.com/healthanxiety

Was doing so well with IAM until I triggered myself with an intrusive thought , dumped into absolutely crazy panic for 24 hours solid … made a massive mistake by having a drink to escape it , now I have the same panic but made worse with a hangover … idiot 😮

Hi Slim. I am so sorry you are struggling with going to the doctor. You are not alone. This is a fear that is very common in people with health anxiety. Some people have the tendency to go too much, and others are afraid of seeing any medical provider or having any tests. I have a section on how to gradually help yourself in this area in my course if you were interested in working on this. It is possible to retrain your brain and make progress in this area. Here are a few links for you: Health anxiety assessment www.paigepradko.com/healthanxietyquiz OnLine Course: Rapid Recovery from Health Anxiety www.paigepradko.com/healthanxiety

Hi Ipsita. I will say that most of the time health anxiety is ocd if there are obsessive health worries. But sometimes it can be undiagnosed panic disorder.

@@tomsale5142, I more often see severe muscle tension in people I am treating for panic disorder and agoraphobia. They seem to tighten different muscles, especially around their shoulders, neck and chest when feeling highly anxious. I have treated it by helping people to create the tightness on purpose during interoceptive exposures and also helped people to shift their focus and stop checking on the tension in their body. It is difficult to stop scanning your body for tension. But, you can shift your focus and give yourself messages that the feeling is not harmful or dangerous.

@@tomsale5142, joints crack and pop and make all kinds of noise. Lots of people crack their knuckles and knees and wrists and necks, etc. As frustrating as it is, there is a certain amount of uncertainty we have to just live with and tolerate when it comes to our health.

I have had health anxiety for yrs. I was quite sick as a baby and almost died. Was very sick with illness and fevers as a child. I remember the illnesses as a child. Teen yrs I had anxiety. Age 27 I was in a horrible car accident and given blood to save my life. Then the illness began. Symptoms that could nor be diagnosed. Got to believe I was crazy. Avoided doctors as much as possible. But oh so sick. So tired. I stressed. What's wrong with me. But what I had did not get a name until 1989. Hepatitis C. From the blood in 1982. I was finally diagnosed in 1999. But by then anxiety had me. Depression had me. No cure then for hep c. Symptoms would go away then come back with a vengeance. I developed heart problems thyroid problems had cancer 3 times. Thought my anxiety caused this stuff. Blamed myself, but now today cured of hep c because of the great meds, I look back and see my health problems were caused by hep c. That's why I have health anxiety. Is there hope for me. I am almost 70 yrs old.
