Hi! As a Torquinian (person born in Torquay) now living in Paignton, I am always pleased and somehow flattered when someone takes the trouble to film a lovely Gimbal walk here such as yours. Your vlog was all the more enjoyable because of the sunny blue sky day you chose in order to show our town off at its best. Yes, at 1 minute-20 secs (1-20), You showed our much loved cinema, looking better now after many years of expensive restoration inside and out. All paid for by charity and hard work by volunteers. You're quite right, it is the oldest purpose built cinema in Europe and one that our Agatha Christie used to often frequent. And I have actually sat in her favoured seat! Torbay Road is, for now, traffic free. Torbay Council launched a public consultation some time ago regarding several ideas to improve Paignton, including a petition style vote for or against the pedestrianisation of Torbay Road. The overwhelming result was in favour of it. Now the traders are up in arms about it... why didn't they object before the trial closure of the road took place? Nearby Victoria Street has been pedestrianised for years and is thriving! Road precinct and cafe culture... sounds good to me. 5-05, The Talk of the Town. One of our better Wetherspoons and one that I know very well. 5-57, Sue Barker. I met her once many years ago at the Palace Hotel in Torquay when she was just starting out as a tennis player. I shook her hand... lovely girl. 5-57, I can answer your question about why the Vue Cinema is where it is. Back in the 1960's, it was built as a theatre for holidaymakers and locals. It was called The Festival Theatre then and was built to rival The Princess Theatre in Torquay. It was located where it is, next to the beach, to give it that 'Seaside Holiday Attraction' vibe. Also, there was and still is another theatre in the centre of the town, the 'Palace Theatre', so they had to be a distance apart. I watched both Kim Wilde and Debbie Harry sing (at different times) at the old Festival Theatre back in the day. Sweet memories! 🥰 11-06, You crossed the road near the mini roundabout at the junction of Esplanade Road and Sands Road which was possibly the most dangerous place in that area that you could have picked! Some time ago I was driving along Sands road towards the mini roundabout & Esplanade Road and just as I as about to turn left onto Esplanade Road I had to jam my brakes on hard to avoid running over four people who were crossing blindsided at that exact place! Not recommended to anyone watching your vlog who may be visiting Paignton anytime. 14-08, Paignton Harbour. Beautiful, (when the tide's in!) I would highly recommend the boat trips across the bay to Torquay, Brixham, Dartmouth and other places along the coast. Fabulous. 18-32, It's at about at this point where you tell us that the sand on the beach is red because of "the iron in the limestone." Um, firstly, there is much limestone in the cliffs in Torquay and Brixham, but there is certainly no iron in it. The sand is red because, if you didn't notice, the cliffs in Paignton are made of sandstone which is red. The sand is only red because it used to be part of the cliffs before they were eroded by the sea over years. However, most of the SOIL in Devon is coloured red because THAT is what contains high quantities on iron. (Just so you know). 23-19, Yes, our lovely pier with its fish and chips, ice cream shop, sideshows for kids and the huge amusement arcade along the length of it. I spent many happy hours there as a kid and wouldn't be without it. And, as you mentioned, the lovely dogs on the beach! (In winter only unfortunately). The next beach on, towards Torquay, is a smaller beach called Preston Beach. (Preston, Paignton... not Preston, Lancs. 😂) It's pretty much a locals' beach. In winter and when the tide's out, it's a dogs' paradise. For me too, when I go there for walks in the afternoons and see them all running around and enjoying themselves. Finally, thank you SO MUCH for coming to Paignton and making this vlog. Like I said, I treat it as a huge compliment when vloggers like yourself take the time to come here and literally show the world out wonderful town. Keep up the good work!

I have lived in Paignton for the last 12 years, it is truly a magical place. We visited Paignton a couple of times many years ago when my parents were still alive, the fond memories have always stayed with me so I moved here when I retired and I enjoy every minute of my life here. Thank you for a great video of my hometown.

What lies are you tellin' , Paigton is such a dump , That I took a 1,5 hour tour via WhatsApp video call . I think the phone end call button jammed 😂 Two " Towns " merged , Both scenic , A transition between seaside and town landscape surrounded by forest ... No wonder it's a tourist destination . And no cullin' the gulls , Even if they do rob your fish n chips n sausage rolls 😂

The pink hotel is the Cherry Tree Hotel. It used to be called the Bramcote Hotel and my mother and father owned it. I was born in Paignton in 1952 and lived in the hotel until 1964 when we became 10 pound Poms and moved to Australia. This video brought back wonderful memories, thank you.

Great video, 10/10 Only visited Paignton once in 1989, blue skies, blue seas and heat to melt lead. It was the first time we stayed in a hotel with our three lads after years in flats, The Clifton Hotel on Kernou Road, it was more to the left than you filmed. On the first meal our lads cleaned their plates, unlike the family on the next table, the owner asked if they could manage a “a grown up meal”, we said we only booked for two adults and three children but he said he hated waste and for the rest of the stay provided full meals for them. We did get to the station when we went on the Paignton to Kingswear steam railway and the trip across the river Dart to Dartmouth and a trip up the river. We did go the cinema to watch Indian Jones and the Last Crusade, not sure if it was the one in your video. We also went to a theatre at Babbacombe to see No Sex Please, We’re British staring Paul Henry from Crossroads. There was a family with similar aged children and we drove over the hills to Brixham stopping at a go-cart circuit where the children had a great time before having a fish supper in Brixham We were staying longer than them and they had visited the miniature village at Babbacombe when the Close Encounters of the Third Kind didn’t work so they were given the free tickets for the next performance as they couldn’t use them they gave to us, it did work for us Sorry for the long post but you did ask for memories.

My family have been going to Paignton since the late 40's when my dad was young. Many memories from around there as a child, we used to stay round the bay in Goodrington and walk into the town. I have a picture of the thatched house at 17.20 from 1957 only difference is that the glass screen windows aren't there, dad spent many holidays there as a kid in that house as it was a hotel years ago, he even dragged mom there for their honeymoon! I went last year, nothing much changes except the variety of shops but nice to see the sun out in January, lovely walk around video.

I spent many Summers in Paignton as a kid at the Great Western Hotel. This was back in the 80s and early 90s. Still remember the cinema next to Paignton Station (saw Independence Day here when I was 15!), and recall a large Woolworths store opposite. It's bittersweet watching these videos because whilst I'm sad I can't be a kid again I'll always love this town & associate it with the innocent of childhood & the excitement of going on Summer holidays for a week in the Summer.

OMG that’s crazy , I was born in Paignton in 1960 , I worked at the Melba Cafe in 1972 with my friend Tony Abbott, I got sacked because my Mr, Whippy ice cream was too big 😂 then I got a chefs apprentice job at the Livermead Cliff Hotel in 1979 when Jeffry Poat was the manager there ! How crazy is that , you must of known Stuart Bolton too , the head chef there , dam just re read you said Red Cliff hotel , not Livermead, I know your hotel well too , went out with a waitress from there .

Great video thanks. Last visited Paignton in the late fifties, the early sixties. Wife and I have booked a short stay next week ((25th to 28th July 2023) travelling by train from Oxfordshire ( just like we used to as a family with Mum, Dad and elder sister) and hope the weather is kind to us!! Originally would visit for two weeks each August and Dad would automatically re-book the same hotel for the same dates the following year, happy days. Looking forward to seeing just how the area has changed

Spent summers in Paignton as a child in the 80s and 90s. Love seeing the place off season, but it seems it is a bit run down. My parents went there this summer - my Mum's first visit was in the 60s. We really love the place and have fond memories and had dear friends there. Thank you for all your lovely vids! I live in Sweden and haven't been back to the UK since 2014, but I've been to a lot of the places you visit. Watching feels like a great way to keep a connection.

Wonderful video. Enjoyed many happy times at Paignton and neighbouring Goodrington Sands as a child in the 1970s and 80s. My favourite holiday haunts, especially with the steam trains! Don't remember quite so many cars parking on the prom' though! Quite ironic when considering that they've pedestrianised the main shopping street! Think that the Vue cinema has taken over the theatre site. Entertainers such as Ken Dodd were on the bill when we used to visit! My Mum, is now bedridden with dementia. Do hope that watching these videos helps her to remember our happy family holidays and days out to all of these lovely places. Definitely a 10 out of 10 from us.

Paignton and those amusement arcades take me back to my childhood in the early nineties, the number of hours at weekends and summer holidays we must of spent in them, I remember a wrestling game, it was the day's of Hulk Hogan and WWF being popular, we could never get past the 5 wrestler, the amount of money we must of spent trying to beat him. 🤣🤣🤣

Great video....10/10....I've been visiting the english riviera since the early 80's, I usually stay in torquay now but I used to stay in Dawlish Warren a lot, I always visit Paignton when I'm down there and often take the steam train and boat trip, I also go on the boat trip from torquay to Brixham, it's a lovely part of the world, I'll, be back down there this year.

10 out of 10 for your excellent video! Way back in the late 80’s my 2 youngest children and I stayed at a holiday park in Brixham. We visited Paignton for a day and met up with my cousin, who lives there. The beach was jam packed and we didn’t really get to see much else, so I can’t say how much it has changed since then, though I expect it has, quite a bit! Watching your video made me long to visit it again, but for longer. Maybe I’ll try to treat myself to a little break in one of those pretty pastel coloured guest houses! Thank you for all your interesting videos!

I agree with a lot you say, except Sand, I like it to be yellow and soft. Not "Sandstone". One place we always head for is the end of Harbour grand views. B&Bs are expensive , one we stop in is "Sealawn" very reasonable. You did not show the very expensive new Hotels on front. Are they what Paignton needed ?

I think most Uk seasides definitely need high end hotels to give as much choice as possible I stay in a mix of old traditional bed and breakfasts but sometimes allow myself a bit of luxury occasionally with a stay in a better standard hotel so it’s good to have the options

Brixham is the place to stay. Much more character. It's only 4 or 5 miles away. Paignton is a bit too much like Blackpool or Skegness.

in 2023 Paignton was described to me as a run-down victorian holiday resort, high street plagued by gangs of youths lottering around. recent cash injection for CCTV recently. plus reading the same in online paper i think called Devon Life or something. Anyway my Question is would you move to Paignton area? I know bit of an open ended question

Hi love your videos.. We are travelling from Cumbria in June to Torquay.. Are you able to walk along the beach from Torquay to Paignton.. Is it a tidal beach.. So you can only do it when the tide is out.. Or is it not possible anyway.

I'm in this video. 02:30 when the crossing alarm starts sounding, that's me pushing the pram down the road. I did notice you, but had no idea about this channel. I think you filmed this on Monday just gone? Might be a day or so off though as it's that weird time of year when everyone forgets what day it is.

I come from the midlands and love Torbay ended up moving here 2 years ago. My only issue with Paignton is Crockle alley and that disgusting building the Vue cinema who ever thought that was a good idea it’s desperate. It’s needs knocking down and starting again it’s stuck in the eighties and looks tired. It has so much potential it could be great with some serious investment just to bring it up to date.

Sadly there are two things now wrong with Paignton. Blocking the high street off but worst of all. Hotels are now filling up with illegal emigrants so closed to holiday makers. This will stop people from coming Torquay is the same.

Council just done a U turn about the road closure 4 months before local elections. Running scared is the opinion of local voters nothing to do with the local traders loosing business. Also this area is always this quiet during the winter months.

I live just down the road. Yes hotels are available at the moment but the odd one or two have niw git illegal immigrants. So it won't be much longer before others will be closed to holiday makers. I do enjoy your walks though. 🙂
