2:00 I was experiencing pain in this region from prolonged sitting in an old 1950s era desk chair I was using at the start of the pandemic telecommuting from home. I realized the pain was from the sitting position in that chair which before the pandemic I would sit in for no more than an hour most, but when telecommuting I was in it for my 9 hr shift, not continually as I would get up to walk around but the damage was still being done cumulatively. I finally went out an bought a modern ergonomic desk chair, and within a month the pain went away, so choice of chair is also a huge factor in how to avoid issues listed here.

The overlap of the vertebrae transforms the spine into an active tower, whose stability must be achieved with dynamic anchors. A rigid seat does not give the legs the role of dynamic anchors and when you get tired, the back looks for support points and collapses in the backrest.

What helps me a lot is having a bike and also doing that stretch where you bend your knee and grab your foot with your hand to stretch the top part of your leg (the muscle right above your knee). You can also use your bed instead of your hand if its difficult. Trust me, it helps. Also if you lay flat on your bed and bring your legs up and pull on the area behind your knees, youll feel relief in your lower back. Also any standing hip stretch. All those help you fight the problem.

My wife has been diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia... A couple years ago she broke her hip...I can't get her to do anything...she just sits in the chair all day, between trips to the bathroom... She crosses her broken hip leg over the other... A couple weeks ago I was putting on here socks and noticed that one of her feet were puffy...when I push on it, it stays indented...I was told that it could be a symptom of liver or kidney problems...but it goes away when she lays down; it's only after sitting, with her legs crossed, that it happens... I have been trying to troubleshoot the problem by making her sit up straight and not cross her legs (before she started getting sick she had excellent posture)... I can't get her to cooperate...yesterday and today I told her that if she keeps crossing her legs that I would tie them to the legs of the chair...

Amazing explanation. I understand why Iliopsoas and hamstrings become tight, but why does gastric and soles become shortened in sitting position?
@rakdan202
@rakdan202 Жыл бұрын
your gastrocs and Soleus are responsible for pointing the foot or plantar flexion. Since in sitting you do none they are held in one position. Second Gastrocs are part of the kinetic chain with hamstrings so having one shortened directly affecting the continuation of the chain. For better explanation look up Superficial Back Line by Thomas Myers.

The trick to sitting well is to get rid of comfortable, cushy chairs and sit on a firm surface. Doing so will give your body kinaesthetic information about where the ground is, which stimulates your anti-gravity reflexes. Think your head towards the ceiling and your sit bones into the chair. Slide up toward the front of the chair and slip your hands under your sit bones so you can feel where they are. Your sit bones are rockers so you can easily rock forward and back, but perched on the bottom of the rockers will be most efficient. Relax your legs by moving them in and out so the are not held into your body and plant them firmly on the floor. It takes some time for the muscles to adapt to a change in use, bit ultimately sitting at the edge of a firm chair with your legs as secondary support becomes second nature and you can sit that way all day long with ease. Why? Because the vertical position allows each vertebra to stack on top of the next, requiring very liittle muscular effort, and the legs provide balance and a little support as well. It is difficult to do this when a chair is too too high, too low or tilted backwards. You hips should be at the same level as your knees or a little higher. If you only have squishy chairs, grab a large hardcover or something firm and put it on the chair.

This just nailed my issues 100%, and in the exact problem areas. I have short legs too. This puts extra strain on my lower back because sitting in chairs tilts my pelvis forward due to my feet not properly reaching the floor to provide support. I dont know what treatment might provide some relief.

I've had left sided neck pain for 4 months been to physio and accupuncture. Pain is relieved in bed and sitting in armchair. Driving/shopping makes it a lot worse.

I am having muscle knots in lower back due to which I am not able to sit at all… mostly working in standing position , doing stretches but still not helping to get permanent relief. Can anyone suggest what is the permanent way to fix these knots…
