Thanks so much for this. I'm 5wks PO of Tkr. and the first 4 wks were fine - getting up to 0 degree flat and 130 degree bend. Then suddenly this shooting pain on the outside of my knee started a week ago. Really set me back with exercises and confidence. But after watching this, at least I know why.

That was so helpful & encouraging. Thank you! I'm almost 6 weeks post op bilateral knee replacement. Left knee is going brilliantly, right knee constant lateral pain. At least i know now what is the likely cause of this pain. Your explanation makes perfect sense. I'll try to be patient

This video really helped me to understand more why I started having pain laterally. I got off the toilet more sideways to the left, and have had lateral right knee pain since. I was worried that I had hurt my replacement, but now I will just wait for it to get better. Thank you.

Thank you for this video. This is exactly what I am feeling. Video explains a lot. I saw my doctor at 4 weeks PO. At the time I wasn’t feeling it. He said I was doing great with good ROM. Around 5 weeks PO I started feeling a pulling or popping that hurt if I moved a certain way. This resulted in pain on the side where the IT band is. I tried doing more stretching exercises but I feel like I have made it more sore. Now at 9 weeks PO I still feel it. I do stretching and ROM exercises twice a day and a recumbent bike 30 minutes every other day. The last few days I am doing it everyday. Idk if I am doing too much or not enough. I hope in time the IT band will feel better. Thanks for the insightful video.

You are very welcome… you may be doing a little too much, this takes some guess and check. Try taking one or two of your stretches out of your routine for a week pr so and see how it feels. Oftentimes with this issue people tend to overemphasize stretching and need to focus a little more on strengthening particularly for the glutes and hips. Some good exercises are bridging, clamshells, sit to stands, side stepping, step ups.

Thanks. This was the best information I've heard on IT band discomfort. I'm 5 1/2 months post TKR. Finished PT after 12 weeks with good straightening but 115 flexion. I'm still seeing improvement though as I continue exercises and stationary bike at home. I would like a video for those of us farther out from surgery, like 6 months, 12 months, 18 months regarding troubleshooting, expectations, and encouragement. Thanks for your great instructions.

I'm six months out. Can ride my bicycle for hours without it bothering me, but putting on my pants was painful when I tried to bend my knee. I've noticed a big difference in the last few weeks. With it bending without it hurting as much. I figured it would take time, but not this much. Hopefully it will keep improving over time.

It should continue to improve, especially as you stay active and exercising, that will allow you to build strength and soft tissue tolerance.

9 months out, hiked relatively flat ground in the desert for 5 days. Then ran around airports, ugh. But it felt stiff when i got home. So I got in hot tub and tried to flex it more( about 18 hours ago). Now inflamed🤔🤕 and stiffer of course! please tell me I haven't destroyed it! And it will calm down.
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Very likely you just need to give it some time with lighter / less activity to calm down. Sometimes stiffness, pain, and swelling have a delayed onset.. I recommend on/off icing and elevating the leg and just some very light activity, such as short walks, easy home exercises. Hope it clears up and feels better soon!

@@KneeReplacementTherapists why thank you so much for your quick response! I switched to heat. But I will go back to ice. Good to know I didn't sabotage the whole thing. It is amazing we can get such a replacement, instead if a wheel chair!🤯🙄 And good to know the whole spectrum of results. That some can take over a year to feel much better. No one ever laid that fact out for me.

I just want to clarify. Would this be the pain that causes me a lot of pain and stiffness when walking down stairs? Like a stabbing pain?
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Hard to say definitively as there could be a couple different reasons for this, but potentially, yes.

I had my replacement July 10, I am struggling with pain on the outside that feels like a pinching with specific movement, I am also unable to go down stairs normally due to the pain and tightness my PT is unable to identify exactly what the problem is at times she say's it's my back causing the pain then she will say my IT band she has even said that this may just be the way it is. The pain will go to the back of my knee at times . Any suggestions?
@KneeReplacementTherapists

I can't provide a specific diagnoses without performing a personalized assessment, but I will say with a knee replacement there are changes to the alignment and volume of your knee joint. Your surgery will restore alignment as well as spacing and volume of the knee joint. What this means is all the soft tissue around the knee including tendons and ligaments are pulled and stretched tight. In addition, there is normal inflammation and swelling that is a normal part of the healing process, and you likely have started to progressively increase your activity level and exercises with your rehab. All this said, there is a lot of stress and strain on the soft tissue around the knee and things like IT band syndrome, tendinopathy are not uncommon. The best thing to do in these cases is give your body time and continue to keep your knee and body moving. I tell my patients it's ok to work through a little pain and discomfort (say 3/10 or less) as this allows your body and tissues to adapt to the stresses placed on them, but anything higher is too much as we also want to avoid an exacerbation of symptoms... hope this info helps!
