Excellent video from a normal bloke. Thank you. Nice to hear realistic view. Makes me feel normal when I hear “took me ages to get used to” from yourself & “prepare to lose a few planes”

This video is 100% spot on. Everything that painless talks about is true. I live in a rural area in America and there's no other hobbyist here to teach me to fly. I'm totally self-taught by watching painless360 and the flitetest guys. I can fly a Bixler quite well, but my forte is 6 Channel Helicopter, it's just my thing- sport flying not 3D. 3d is Meh..... A lot of the things that painless talked about in this video I have experienced firsthand. The Bixler is super easy to learn on and repair. I love the Bixler because a single battery would last me 45 minutes or more. I would fly it up super high, throttle own and glide down silently over a period of 10 to 15 minutes. And then I would take it back up again real high, then glide back down again another 10 to 15 minutes. It was easy, I loved it. Good job on this video and I applaud you..

Another good point for beginners is that if they have to replace their bixler because it's destroyed they can now buy the Kit version for much cheaper (and maybe a couple of servos) and rebuild the model with an all new body but old electronics. About stabilisation it's super easy to install stabilisation RX they are cheap too! And in Britain with the almost omnipresent windy conditions this makes a HUUUGE difference on a bixler or Axn and similar models! I would absolutely recommend stabilisation to anyone who is starting as it allows you to fly comfortably on many days that would otherwise be white knucke experiences ;-).

I’ve started fairly late in life and have been so lucky in meeting someone who has taken me under his “wing” and spent hours with me connected via buddy box. I’ve put together a Ranger 1600 with iNav/Matek Wing and a Bixler with Eagletree Guardian. We tried them both for the first time yesterday and both flew brilliantly so I am just about ready to go solo.

Hi, I've just enjoyed your video and shared it with a number of guys I'm reaching to fly. The only problem I find with planes such as the Bixler is that because they are so light you restrict the number of days you can fly because of wind, stabilisation can help but a heavier plane holds its own better. On the subject of the Bixler I have been experimenting with mine and the Taranis using telemetry to automatically control/adjust the plane so far I have succeeded in deploying flaps using the speed from the gps module, I know its only ground speed, but I haven't got an air speed sensor yet. I was watching a film from RCdiy about a lua script for return to home which I'm going to investigate. I know your channel is predominantly quads but perhaps a series on control using feedback loops for fixed wing using telemetry might be interesting to your viewers.

Great video Lee. From personal experience I can tell you I have done many of the things you point out not to do with bad results. I started my flying career with multi-rotors and when I started to fly fixed wings had a lot of troubles. The transition from multi to fixed is not an easy one.

Very helpful. Thank you. I bought a bixler 2 years ago, just a shame you can't still buy them. Mine has been smashed many times and I still struggle to keep it in the air for more than a few minutes. Going to try stabilization because it always seems to be windy nowadays.

Problem with motors I've found as a newby is the very short amount of flying time they give you. The motors on my Pheonix 1600 glider burnt out so I'm going to build a propless glider that will stay up for ages & facilitate the practice time I need rather than having to land just as I'm getting going. (I was budying & would of been rude to expect my trainer to accept a new battery & just keep going). I was advised to trim whilst flying into the wind.

Paying for simulators is not a requirement - there are several free RC simulators. If you're too tight to pay for commercial simulator software, try some of the freebies.

Do you recommend any?

No worries if it's too much but any chance you could do a piece / series on OpenXsensor?
@williamsapey63286 жыл бұрын
What everyone forgets to mention about simulators is that you need a pretty powerful computer to run a simulator, when I got into fpv drones everyone told me to get a sim first but After paying for a simulator I discovered it ran like crap on my family pc and was useless! (I don’t use it normally as I use an iPad Pro for that sort of stuff) I feel this is almost NEVER mentioned by people that recommend sims :/

great video lee when your setting up a plane in your radio can you copy your qaudcopter settings to setup a plane model
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
Depends on the radio. Quadcopter and plane model have an awful lot in common but there are some key differences. So even if you copied it across, you'd have to spend a bit of time editing it to be right for the model you're using. See my simple plane setup video for more tips. Happy flying!
@wdavie276 жыл бұрын
+Painless360 thanks very much lee it's the flysky i6 transmitter and my quads are setup in plane mode on this radio and I was thinking I should be able to copy my quad to a new model and make any changes if needed I just thought I'd ask as purchased the volantex ranger G2 so I'm doing my homework lee I do have the devo 7 devolution transmitter aswel which one would you say will be better and can you tell me if a spectrum receiver will bind to any of there's two transmitters as I noticed it seems to be the spectrum receivers that's mostly used with model plans lee
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
I don't have any of those radios so it's tricky to comment. What I have noticed is that some radios will limit specific functions depending on the model type you have selected. So for example if you select a quadcopter model type then you can't do all of the mixing you might need to get a plane flying well. Personally, I would start from a brand new model and get it working properly. Again, see my video on simple and complex plane set up for the steps that I follow. Best of luck, happy flying!

The S6R is ok but a pain in the ar$e to setup, I've looked at a few on the channel and I'm planning on getting a few of the latest ones to look at.. stay tuned!
@loc47256 жыл бұрын
+ Drew Rosie I have to agree. The S6R can be a bit of a b1tch to set up; the provided -manual- leaflet is pretty useless and sadly some of the people on the RCGroups S6R forum can be bullies at times, which obviously doesn't help. All that said though, RCDIY's guide (on the web) is *very* good and FrSky has made things a little easier with "quick mode" being the default on newer firmware. And once setup it works really well. The self righting/leveling mode in particular is great for beginners and makes the normally difficult task of landing incredibly easy.

What do you think of the horizon SAFE equiped planes like the Timber or the Apprentice line?
@JoshWeaverRC6 жыл бұрын
I personally love the SAFE for beginners, and even certain situations for experienced pilots. Although, last night I tried the Horizon mode and felt it would be much better for the beginner. It will allow the flips people will want to do, but does not require them to flip a switch to get back to level, just let go of the sticks. I'm a bit more on the experienced side, so was flying in the dark and being able to let go of the sticks and still give it throttle I knew it was level and climbing. That said, I feel the Timber has many characteristics for the starting pilot.
@glumfish68626 жыл бұрын
RCWeaven FPV Thanks I like the Timber more than the Apprentice because of the wheels. I haven't gotten it yet my only plane is the Sport Cub S. Great plane but flight time and durability of the control surface joints is poor and they are non repairable since it is very thin foam.
@JoshWeaverRC6 жыл бұрын
I have two Sport Cub Ss. I have the Mini-Apprentice, which being tricycle gear is helpful for the starter. The Timber is so well behaved and jumps off the ground so quick, that it being a tail dragger is not an issue for ground loops. On the Apprentice, I got out of control too low and panicked and did not flip the switch back to SAFE, but the motor upgrade made it fly much better. If you can fly the Sport Cub S, you can fly the Timber, IMHO.

Aids that help inspire confidence and get you flying safely are a great idea when you're starting out. My only word of caution is once your proficient flying with them turned on, then learn to fly without the crutches too - it'll help you if something hiccups with the stabiliser.. happy flying!

Hey I just noticed one of my ailerons has more throw than the other and upon closer expection saw the servo rod is screwed on longer than the other. Is this normal or something I need to adjust to line up with the other? I’ve also subtrimmed one eilron as it wasn’t center when in neutral position is that correct as well?
@Painless3604 жыл бұрын
The movement of the ailerons needs to be exactly the same each side. See my 'basic plane setup' video for all the steps I follow to setup a model... Best of luck!

Painless360 thanks for clearing that up. Really appreciate it. Another thing is I wanted to add expo to my ar wing. Atm I’ve got the weight set at -50 in the mixer tab for all channels. I tried changing expo in the mixer tab but seemed to have zero effect. I put on expo in the inputs tab and that seemed to do something but the weight is different in the input tab. Is what I have done right? Thank you :)
