If you can find local pilot who can teach you to fly or help you with radio or model setup (or even 'buddy-box' with you to help you learn to fly) - then do that as the first choice. If you don't have access to someone like that - this video is for you...

Definitely I have taught quite a few people to fly fixed-wing. So much easier with a buddy box. Because most of the time they buy the wrong airplane but they want to fly it anyway. Lol

Hi, Been doing tons of MultiRotor flying for years... always wanted to do fixed wing... just finished building a ~2m MFD Crosswind pro. Before watching this video I assumed that the Pixhawk would take care of all the flight stabilization etc. and I would only have to work with the controls giving minor inputs to direct the Pixhawk. After watching this video I'm really really scared !!!

Excellent video for a drone pilot wanting to fly fixed wing. I am also one of those pilots. If you would like to learn fixed wing or any RC vehicle and cannot find a experienced pilot, look for a local RC club. I did that, the help and support you get is amazing. I bought my own planes but was given an old plane by one of the members. The experience in putting in a receiver, getting it bound to a transmitter and setting up the control services and asking a couple of hundred questions really helped me understand how to fly. Highly recommend a simulator, I have Liftoff for drones and Realflight 8 for drones, engine fixed wings, gliders and heli's. Excellent for muscle memory. You will be doing loops and rolls in no time. See you in the sky.

I've flown drones for a little while now and have always wanted to fly fixed wing. Last weekend I got to do just that, with an experienced fixed wing pilot, for the first time. My reactions where exactly the same as your friend. Tons of excitement and uncontrollable smiling all day long. We buddy boxed and it was awesome! Thanks for the tips!

After several weeks and several attempts to fly fixed wings mainly (zohd dart and drift, arwing) and literally about to throw in the towel I finally had my first successful flight followed by a few other great flights back to back Thanks so much Lee for helping me get to this point I fly quads regularly but really struggled making the switch and because of your in depth videos I figured out my problem 😁👍👍👍

@@Painless360 so for me it was the dumbest thing and now seems like common sense I watched several videos of the setup of this wing and assembled the wing plugged in the zohd dart which was my first wing and here is my ERROR I set up the elavons on the fc the same direction as the controller so when I pulled back on the sticks the elavons rised like they should but when the plane pitched back the elavons lifted instead of lowering as soon as I corrected that I was off flying, no crashes or death rolls no one on any other videos shows that the plane and controller should be different they only show the controller settings not the stabilization settings on the elavons I am new to wings and hopefully it helps someone else I am flying 180% better.

Great video. I'm almost in the same boat. I have 10 multi rotor builds under my belt. Now my scratch build fixed wing foamy is complete and ready to fly. I'm just doing a little research before I crash it ---- I mean fly it. Very informative as all your videos. I appreciate How you break it down so it's easy to understand. Thanks

The timing of this video is impeccable . I just built my first fixed wing (AR Wing) and will go out for first flight next week. I did opt to go for a INav/GPS combo though, so I can get RTH, autolaunch, etc.

Very good informative video as always. I still fly with a chunk of expo on most planes (unless they are particularly sluggish) even after many years of flying. The most common problem I've seen with quad pilots swapping to planes is the throttle muscle memory when they are approaching an obstacle. But an open field with a bit of height tends to negate that tendency.

Great video, nice and gentle introduction to fixed wing and the Bixler, like you say, is a great beginner plane but expandable with things like flaps even FPV later on.

Excellent guide, nice and clear - we could do with more like this for beginners. I also suggest disabling or really limiting the rudder to begin with, to prevent putting the model into a spin (assuming a field landing with no wheels). Adding a stabilizer to even a twitchy model might calm it enough so you don't loose it on the first flight. It also lets 1st timers put it in 6-axis for launch and those 'Brain Rebooting' moments ;-)

I came from hubsans, to 3D helicopters, then 5” quads (as the helis were expensive to crash!) then more recently wings & planes. The skills are all very much transferable. I found the most difficult thing is hand launching my heavier wings, the vorti weighs a couple of kg. My first fixed wing was a strix goblin. Once launched it was awesome

The approach I like is using a buddy box system. I have set up wireless capability via the JR bay. I have a FrSky or a Spectrum receiver in the bay that the other person's radio can bind to. The Taranis will interpret the PPM or SBus signal as the buddy box. OR use a stereo cable to connect the two radios.

One thing that really helps if you can practice on a simulator. My preference is Liftoff, but there are more out there. After a few hours of simulator you will feel the quad and you make a big improvement in real life flying.

Nice tips, but here in the us, we use the buddy box system, most field here have houses around, I'm a instructor and I know by experience things can get ugly fast, one time a student did not win his wing and he decided to flight solo, result, the plane got into the house by the sliding patio door, got into the living room, then the kitchen, we almost lost the field do to that incident. so never ever flight a plane until you know what you doing. Quads you chop the throttle and problem solve, planes keep going. Now at days people crash and the think is normal and is not, people said the plane is a bad model because they can not identify what they flying, in this hobby we have scale, war birds, trainers, sport, wings, and 3D planes, they all flight different. Just my two cents.

Hi Painless, do you have any tips on how to remove the "training wheels" of self leveling modes? I have learned to only fly in acro mode while using FPV for both quads and planes but I typically need to go back to Horizon mode when flying LOS. Have any thoughts or videos that can help? It's important because everyone says that you should start a flight in pass-through mode when madoning.
@Painless3605 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting question, why do you feel you have to use a self level mode when flying fixed wing line-of-sight? What happens if you turn off the help from the FC?
@thomasneff3765 жыл бұрын
@@Painless360 I guess I've always just had a flight controller available since I started to fly planes after learning to fly race quads. I think it's just become a crutch to always know that I have a safety mechanism if I momentarily lose orientation and can always allow the FC to correct a wrong turn. If I'm flying without a FC, I typically will tend to crash from over correcting or increasing a mistake.
@Painless3605 жыл бұрын
If you're happy flying like that then it's not a problem. It can be handy to be able to fly 'full manual' and expo, proper hardware setup and things like expo on the radio (along with a decent trainer 'plane) will help a lot. Have you tried something like a Bixler/Skywalker?
