It's so important for people new to painting to see that revisions are necessary and normal! For an artist, the ability to make this kind of objective judgement is as important as the skill to act on it. Drawing and painting live subject who won't sit still is a great exercise, too- the artists we know who did major animation studio internships told us that life sketching in public spaces, where people rarely sit still, was essential training. That's what develops the ability to retain a "snapshot" in the mind of likeness, proportion, and gesture so when we have to work from memory, there's plenty of information available!

She is absolutely precious and has no idea how lucky she is to have the grandpa she's got! I already know she'll be so happy when she's grown that this portrait and video were made with such care. Growing up with a detailed record of your early childhood is a remarkably recent innovation in human history and I can't imagine a better way to "take a snapshot" as you said.

But in addition, we're often given the privilege and joy of spending time with Jeanette (and here, your grandchild, of course)--and feel what it's like to watch a healthy relationship in action. That granny's song made me bawl. I lost my grandma last April, was holding her hand as she lay dying on the way to the hospital. I love her so much and I started drawing and painting as a way to grieve that loss. Mrs Gurney reminded me so much of her. Sending her and you James both lots of love ❤️

What a beautiful sketch and a beautiful baby! I just purchased portraits in the wild a week or so ago and tried my first portrait from life today by having my girlfriend sit and read for about 30 minutes. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be and I feel many of the points you talk about in your video really helped. I want to get better at it so I’ll keep practicing and probably go back and rewatch it again for more pointers. The subtle plane shifts around the eye can really be tricky! It was amazing to see this painting come together. Really lovely.

As peaceful and meditative and tranquility inducing your videos are, this was a skullcrusher with the constant baby crying. But I have lived through this with 2 kids and boy I have to say that parenting especially during the baby, toddler and little kids phase was one of the hardest, often times, most soul crushing thing I ever did. I love my kids more than the entire universe but mannnn parenting is not for the faint at heart. It breaks you! That said, this was another stunning piece of art. I can't ever imagine making such a beautiful painting and then midway destroying it and redoing it. That was ballsy.

Just started doing portraits. Have used my comparator mirror setup with satisfying results. Am now using the iPad camera lucida app. I liked watching you struggle to get your portrait here to your satisfaction. I admire your incredible skills and your friendly, encouraging voice overs. Maybe your small paintings, sketchbook size, are good in that they present painting as something manageable, not huge and overwhelming.
