After watching this video i sat down (for the first time in months) and painted a model i've been planning on painting for years. I figured since i haven't painted it yet, lets just give it a go with a limited pallet. Thanks I DID really appreciate this approach. Personally, I’m interested in a video on how to paint your D&D character without overwhelming the mini because it’s one thing to have special objects for the character and have items they’re wearing from places and encounters in the game, but another when it’s on the mini 😣

It’s best to have a low level, mid level, and high level. If you use consistent colors ( brass for details, silver for metal, ect) it looks consistent and it’s easier to do. To much variety creates a muddy looking mess. Complimentary colors are also the best for clothing (red and yellow looks good.)

That Orc-skin is fabulous. A limited palette brings things together so nicely. It´s like music. If you have all the instruments and effects at you disposal you can loose focus on what it´s all about. I´d even say that limiting a complete army paintjob to ~10 selective colors would make for a very coherent and fascinating army with your skill involved. It´s as you said with the brown tones... we all have too many of them and they just cause confusion.

Great work. Totally amazed how you can take such simple tools and end up with a great result. Shows that you're talented but also that you know how to think about where and what to paint. And I suppose that's what I really enjoy about your content - the delivery is great too, but the real gravy is the advice on how to use the paints properly. Seeing you paint those volumes on his arm with the green and the yellows and then putting the accents on with the glazing was really insightful. But also understanding how all those minute details all have to tie in together to allow the mini to really pop was great information.

Um, most paint sets don't include miniatures with them, other than the occasional GW flagship-faction specific set with paints directed at a certain army and including a few models of that army. Many brands and other GW sets haven't included models because they are meant to be a low price entry point that you can use with the miniatures you like that you probably already have or bought a small cheap set of a few miniatures from the shelf next to it, again, of your choice. It would be one thing if they did just rip you off and lie about box contents, but the one little picture with a disclaimer isn't that and something that simple isn't unheard of for most products.
@enveritas4948
@enveritas4948 3 жыл бұрын
@@Alittlefruitgoesalongway It's about context. These sets are sold in book shops that probably don't have a huge range of minis for you to pick from, or maybe none at all. It's also possible that someone's first experience of the hobby would be ruined if they didn't read the smallprint and expected there to be a mini inside. Not including a single mini is a missed opportunity for GW.

I have painted 3 different blood bowl teams and each time surprised myself how quickly a paint scheme comes together with such a limited range. You do have to let the paint range choose for you some what, if your desired outcome isnt flexible you will just get frustrated. Wet pallet is essential because there is a lot of mixing and some times a need to retouch mistakes with the mixed colour later in the process.

A great paint job with a limited palette - sometimes less is more - and it suits the subject matter 100%. I started painting with Citadel's Monster Paint Set back in the day, and it was certainly a baptism of fire.🤨 Painters should appreciate the plethora of materials available to them in this day and age, techniques have evolved, and the standard has improved exponentially, plus there was no internet to watch great painting tutorials like this. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for a crackin' tutorial, and I appreciate the time and effort taken to produce it. Every day's a school day.

Me having zero clue what colors I need or what paint scheme I want, walked around the store for hours looking at what to get, I settled on the 40k paint tool set, and the orruk starter set as well as some army painter tools, Tamiya extra thin, and a bunch more stuff I really don’t need until after I have figured out if I enjoy the hobby or not. I spent a few hundred $ on tons of stuff I probably don’t need because various KZbinrs said this is great, buy this, everyone needs this. Now I have a few basic colors, some obscure colors and a few duplicates, as well as tons of useless gear: Black, White, 2 identical Red, Blue, Yellow, zombie green, greenish brown, reddish brown, neon green translucent, 2x identical weathering brown, black texture paint, brown texture paint, and 4 metallics. Specifically: 2x Mephiston Red Abbadon Black Corax White Macragge Blue Averland Sunset Orruk Flesh Steel Legion Drab Bugman’s Glow 2x Leadbelcher Runefang Steel Runelord Brass Retributor Armour 2x Agrax Earthshade Tesseract Glow Astrogranite Stirland Mud TL;DR make a very specific list of the bare minimum you need to paint, and do not buy any of the other stuff until you are certain that you enjoy the hobby. Or else you’ll end up sending tons of money on random stuff you have no need for yet, and if you decide this hobby isn’t for you, most of that money is lost because resale value is low. Now I’ll just have to hope I enjoy mini painting when I get home, or else I’ve waste hundreds of dollars.

I really enjoy when you set limitations for yourself and work within those constraints. It is both fascinating and inspiring.

I like this type of limited palate video. It's fun to watch the process of working with what you have and I think the lessons are really helpful for most painters.

My introduction to painting was this old 5 man Dark Angels "learn to paint" set with the TERRIBLE Imperial Primer brush on primer. I'm glad these products exist for new hobbyists, but I don't think I could ever go back to it so I salute you haha

This was the paint set I started with. The Corax White was a dried out clumpy mess, eventually months later I replaced it. No amount of retarder or water would bring it back to life. I've spent a lot of money on paint since but I'm having fun. I branched out from GW and now have the whole Scale75 metallic range. I have 2 bottles of Vallejo primer that I don't even use. White and black spray cans of Army Painter primer which is how I prime everything now. I don't really ever plan on playing the game. I just like the lore and visual appeal of the models. It's something I do to relax and it's a new skill set for me. Which helps utilize parts of my brain that I haven't used in such a matter before. I have found that it helps with my mental health. Also why I recently started learning a foreign language and study it on a daily basis,it seems to help also.

I took the summer off from hobbying to avoid burnout and deal with life. I'm glad I did because now I can't wait to get back into it. Just waiting for this winter storm to be over so I can fly home from camp and get back at it with new invigoration. On the plus side I've got all yours and Scott's videos and podcasts to catch up on. Keep up the good work amigo!!

I have been out of the hobby for a long time now and keep thinking about starting again but don't want to spend a load of money and then realise I don't have time or lose interest again. This has inspired me to go and grab one of those start painting sets and just go for it, loved this video.

Really enjoyed this experiment. Considering a lot of beginners like myself haven't invested a lot into a more sophisticated paint lineup, this gives a better idea of what can be achieved.

this is really cool to see. I have a limited amount of paint, because I am new to the painting hobby. Learning how to mix colors and do the shadows and highlights is really helpful.

The last time I picked up a starter paint kit from Barnes and Noble the paint had separated. Hopefully it'll mix together again when I go to use them. This video was super helpful. I always enjoy your content, even though I don't paint as much as I probably should.

You have become my favorite miniature painting youtuber of all time. Absolutely hilarious intros and very informative content. I just recently got into Warhammer and painting them is by far my favorite part! Thanks so much for being awesome and I look forward to watching your next video!

Great video! I very much enjoyed the premise of painting using a specific paint set and limiting yourself to only using what came in the set. Showing how much depth and interest that can be created by mixing your own paint combinations was very helpful for a beginner. Please consider doing more paint set videos. Also, your pacing, descriptions and camera shots were well done!

Dude... that skin is outstanding!! I'm still a newbie but I do like to try for some degree of proficiency by painting "interesting" minis with oodles of detail to push myself. However this can get so overwhelming that I get analysts paralysis and put thw model off half completed for months! My other half sent me this video to show me that simple is sometimes just as interesting and I'm definitely going to try limit my paint pallet on some of my projects. I have a trio of orcs that I haven't got past the base of the skin for yet so this is actually a perfectly timed video! Thank you for existing! We appreciate you. Also.... get that window fixed! Thanks again for your work! Xxx

I haven't done the same as you, but I did get into painting with a limited palette. Like you said, it works really well for browns. Fantastic result on the ork, it's insane to think you've used that amount of paints for that result
