You know what I really loved about this demo was all those little informative tidbits in your narrative as you went along; staying with a big brush as long as possible, adding reflective light being very much improvisation, mixing ultra marine blue and burnt Sienna instead of burnt umber, adding the darks back, and how darks give "strength to the painting", amassing more paint to the door at the end to bring it forward. They're so simple, but I just find them invaluable, and some of what you say answers questions I've had, so it's sort of filling in all the little gaps as I learn. Anyways, I really treasure everything I've learned here! Great demo, great teaching, thank you!

As people ironically, I guess we see shapes in nature already. But then we spend so much time trying to draw lines. Then as you said in the videos try to fill in between them instead. This powerful technique is such a great way to better interprete what we see. It is such a liberating method Malcolm. Thanks for uploading, much appreciated.

Really enjoyed watching this and saw how you soften some edges and others you reinforce. That is very helpful to see. The progression is lovely and my favorite part of painting!

so pretty!!! Not sure what you mean by 'patterns'? is it something other that identifying masses, dark, light, warm cool? ex. what would you identify as the pattern(s) in your painting? Just thought...maybe looking at a subject and seeing all the parts...mass, dark, lights etc as a 'pleasing' pattern I'd like to paint??? Thank you bunches for your generous sharings of painting!

Patterns are the arrangement of shapes - two dimensional patterns of mass shapes. Imagine taking a scene and turning into a dress pattern for example. You have three of four big shapes. It is a way of taking the confusion out of any subject and getting to the essence of it all.
