Ahh, thank you so much, Matthew, for this video! I have been struggling for the last year in feeling so behind, because I have been going really slow with learning watercolor, and half the time I don’t even finish the paintings I’ve started (life is very busy, as I also care for my elderly parents). I feel validated by what you’ve said in this video, bc focusing on doing some studies first (before big works of art) has become my approach lately. It has been really easy to get caught up in social media and feel as if I am not producing paintings quickly enough compared to others, but I have learned that a frenzied pace that is focused on production and quantity over quality is not realistic or beneficial if I’m going produce the kind and quality of work I’m desiring to. I’m in full agreement with you in this as it has been working a lot better for me to approach my art goals the way you’ve described. Thank you!

Yes! Keep going with that! I'll be doing on video on social media and painting as well.

Thank you for this reminder. I'm a former cello player and beginner painter, and your advice sounds solid; I needed the reminder to be intentional with watercolor, too. Thanks for the link to the guide. Happy painting!

Amazing! Due to time constraints, this tends to be my natural approach to my art practice, so I'm happy to know that it facilitates progress. Thank you for sharing this tip!

So true; not planning prevents me from painting a lot. My favorite is to do small, quick field sketches in my sketchbook before doing studio work. Maybe I'll change that to a value study as you suggested. Thx.

I agree so much with this. It's what I've found to be true myself, so having it affirmed is assuring. I think there are many people who doesn't thrive doing a lot of quantitative work, whos learning patterns is a few hours of deliberate and deep concentration, followed by longer rest than average. This has been how I function with both schoolwork and painting. I've tried "pushing" to become better, but if I paint when I'm not in the right mindset, I ALWAYS mess up. To me, coming in from a rested mental state, where I know that I can put everything aside for a few hours, plan and set up my workspace, is crucial :)

Yes, I can relate to that.

@@an8790 yes! I agree… I also can’t paint unless I am in the right mindset!

@@Jennifer-bl3sq My approach to practice (I learned this from Matthew quite a while ago, but I have some personal context too) is to try to do an artwork of something that interests me in the moment, but also appeals to how I wanna learn to draw and paint. For example, an album cover, or some thing or person from a book I am reading, or a small landscape/garden scene, or a study of a painting I like. And then I try to apply a new lesson, or to do something better that didn't work that well last time. Like a new technique, to dare to make my pencil sketch lighter than last time, etc. For me it's way easier to paint a personal fixation rather than to try to practice with something I don't feel a connection to, like a random apple or a sail boat, or a landscape I don't like that much. It's important that it's a moderate challenge too, like slightly above my skill level. I also like combining two lessons in the sketch and the paint, like maybe I practice drawing a face in the sketch, and a new technique in the painting.

@@an8790 yes! I am learning all of these things about myself as well… Painting, what motivates me to paint, and combining skills. Feel like I’m finally coming along, and on my way… there’s always more learning to do, but feel like I’m getting the right combo/set up/mindset to be successful!

A very helpful resource. We recently had a bedroom makeover, so the ‘studio’, ( and I use the term loosely), looked like a bomb had gone off. Needless to say, it affected my ability to get in the right mental state to paint.

Why does intentionality give me anxiety? Maybe because I'm not truly creative? It's intentionality that I need. Ugh!

Good advice but for a lot of women not so easy. Running a home, caring for children, balancing a work schedule, and so much more. Some of this advice sounds tone deaf toward women and the unrecognized workload we carry.
