Good job, but I'd rather spend the time building a cover for that thing. Most of the newer radiators here in the USA are just flimsy fin tubes that need covers to protect them. The covers are usually fairly ugly metal things, but you can always build them from some kind combination of wood, tile, or a nicer looking metal grate. With covers, they are a little easier to keep clean, safer, and because the covers don't heat up as much, they hold paint or varnish better.

Literally just watched this as I need to do a few of my radiators. I'll certainly have a go. After priming. What paint do you personally recommend to use after? Much appreciated. X

I bought a sanding attachment for the drill. Basically it was 50 or so small pieces of sandpaper in a circle, once these were spinning the paint came straight off. £3.50
@PaintingandDecorating4 жыл бұрын
They do work but can be dangerous.

Where from?
@nihilisticnut99164 жыл бұрын
@@qulsoomrazaque4921 You can buy one from any DIY place, there's a few different kinds to choose from, wire or sandpaper etc. I bought my attachment from Wilkos.

Radiators are a pain in the arse to prep when they're like this.

Wish my radiator was this easy. I've had to use a paint stripper but it's left a lot of sticky residue I'm now stuck trying to get off. Many layers of paint don't help either
@PaintingandDecorating7 жыл бұрын
Not nice hope you get the finish you're after. White Spirit may help to get the sticky residue off.
@HRH237 жыл бұрын
Painting and Decorating thanks. Might try removing the radiator to get a better angle on it then give it another go. Will give white spirit a go

Yes then sand the whole radiator to make a good key for the paint... Light sand in-between coats.. thanks

Great informative video. Gosh it's a lot of work I might just use paint stripper and remove,prime then paint....I have 6 radiators to do various sizes.
@PaintingandDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, paint stripper will be good, but it all depends on how much is damaged.

@@PaintingandDecorating Thank u for your reply I did it your way in the end not much heavy flaking mostly rust which I removed. I used Dulux Once paint in the end very runny but great finish the radiators look new. Keep up the good videos they are very helpful for novice d.i.yers like myself ☺

could be lead in some of the paint layers. may not be best to sand

I’m just in the process of repainting a radiator and I found you video very useful. The front of the radiator is flat, the fins are on the back. The old paint had flaked very badly. I removed the flakey stuff using a scraper and sandpaper. However there are now hairline cracks all over the place, without loose paint next to them. How do I deal with these hairline cracks please?
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Charles Arnold you will have to sand them down best you can or strip the whole radiator.
@charlesarnold49636 жыл бұрын
Painting and Decorating many thanks for your extremely rapid reply. Stripping the radiator at this time of year when the weather is so cold is not really an option so I will sand and paint and sand and paint and see what happens!
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
You can fill the cracks.
@charlesarnold49636 жыл бұрын
Painting and Decorating what product would you suggest please?
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Something that can be lightly sanded 2 part wood filler would work, use a metal primer on bare metal first
@BHP157 жыл бұрын
why you do not use a metal hard brush with a drill to remove the all paint in much shorter time and hassle free?!
@PaintingandDecorating7 жыл бұрын
You can but it's extra tools and safety you have to wear eye protection.

I had a customer recently moaning about how long it takes too sand down prep and gloss a radiator. Frustrating to say the least
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Yes can believe it, I think people like to have a decorator in, but they want you out because they don't like the upset. Some rooms are worse than others. Rooms that never get used much you seem to be left alone. But if it's a room that is used frequently they want you finished yesterday. Which is understandable really.
@essanjay86046 жыл бұрын
Can't you just tell them how long it will take (overestimated) from the get go then they have no room to complain.

My question is “ is it worth time and effort, particularly as you don’t know what the condition of the radiator is internally. Could well be rusted to hell if an inhibitor has not been present!!
