You've really helped me let go of all the "shoulds" I was given from my the last teacher. When I began to feel confined by the rules I was given, during those classes, I began to feel very stifled and angry. I love painting too much to bring anger into this practice. I've been painting a lot during this past year--mostly because my brain needed a different focus. I don't consider myself any sort of "good" painter, but I love doing it. Each time I paint, I find something new and interesting I can bring into the next piece. I've come to understand that painting is not so much about "talent" as it is about practicing the art. I do look at the world differently because of this. I really appreciate your looseness and encouragement without the focus on how I "should" paint.

Great ideas. Another thing I have found that helps me, is to remember what something feels like as I am painting it. I think it might only apply to animals, but it works for me. Especially with horses, knowing what they feel like, how the muscles feel under your hand etc. I think with them in particular, you can always tell if they have been painted by someone that knows them or an artist that has never been near one.

I agree with you. I find it a curse that I can never be satisfied with my work. When I was learning how to paint digitally last year, your words on moving on to the next thing helped me not get too deep into having a connection with my painting. It was quite liberating painting knowing if everything was deleted/burned I don't have to worry about it because I would have built the skills to make another one fast. When I am stuck/giving too much time on a painting and trying not to move on I ask myself "What if somebody painted a BIG BLACK X on the canvas how would you feel?" If you feel to attached to the painting it's time to move on to the next lol. If not continue XD. The truth is if you cannot either have the feeling to let go or repair the painting after that huge X is painted on it, then you are putting too much into it. It will hold you back from making the right painting decisions later on. When I first started painting I stayed on one part and put too much details into it. I realized the dimensions were wrong and instead of painting over and repairing it. I tried to paint around the error and it never looked right. That's when I saw either paint coach or another YT artist just say "I messed up the eye here I will have to paint over this. Don't be afraid to paint over to fix the art." and they proceeded to paint over the whole eye and cheek area to get the dimensions right. It was at that point I realized what was holding me back my skills improved. I plan to get on your patreon soon. I've just been dealing with stuff in Texas that set me back a bit.

I love this! It's so important to practice and understand you have everything to gain by killing your ego - embracing criticism & knowledge from others. I love communities that aren't about competition and intimidation, but building each other up & sharing their own insights to help others better themselves - that's a healthy art community IMO.

You're really great at explaining things. I'm very much just beginning (drawn into painting after doing painting by numbers in lockdown). You were spot on when you explained "when painting, you're studying how the world works visually". Friends have been trying to explain how painting is all light/shade and now I'm at the point where it's naturally coming to me and I'm noticing light and shade when I walk around now (and taking a lot of reference photos!). I love the idea that painting is a way to express why you are interested in something without needing to use a lot of / any words. Thanks for your videos!

Thank you for all you do Chris - hugely appreciated. I do have a request for one of your topics...Can you touch on the process of your color mixing on the palette? Not the colour theory, but rather how and why you mix colors you need as required with your brush vs having individual pools of paint premixed with a palette knife? I'm pretty new to painting and tend to want to premix colors, perhaps too much. Cheers!

As always, I enjoyed your video. I have the struggle with "practice vs. my next master piece". I've been doing watercolor for a long time because I have a parrot and worry about fumes, but I miss the freedom of knowing you can "fix" whatever goes wrong, and not contend with hiding a mistake, which from that point on is all I can see, no matter how the rest of the piece goes. So bought oils, nice ones, and now I'm too uptight to use them, so I'm gonna take your advice and get dome cheaper stuff and save the good stuff for later. I know one is always learning, but with cost of good paper, it is hard to to approach a piece without the idea of making it a "masterpiece". On another note, I had have family that basically sees my art as a "hobby", and I've fought this for my entire life, even after successful shows. I was discouraged form studying art, and I wonder how much this impacts me. Do you feel your parents being artists gave you a mindset that I had erased by mine?

It is interesting you mentioning expensive material as in one doesn't have to use it because it will put pressure on producing sth great. In watercolour the advice is generally just the opposite, that one shouldn't use for example cheap paper, because you just don't get the same result, often leaving beginners disappointed, feeling they can not achieve whatever they saw another artist do. Are the materials one paints on not as important in oil painting? I am completely new to this, happy to have found your channel, I still haven't painted with oil yet, just searching tutorials, trying to learn :).

I started painting again with these water based oils I have, and I started having an issue with layering, where I'd try and add a new layer to a section, or go back with more paint to go over a section, and instead of laying down more paint it just lifted everything I'd put down already without adding... do you know what I might have done wrong???? Any remedy tips????

@@GalleryBry I think I was using just a bit of medium but not much, it was alla prima, the layer was moderately thin I think? Cus that's why I was trying to go over it, it was thin enough to look a bit streaky, and I was using a long softer brush, thanks I appreciate any advice!!!

Can you coach a 72 yo man to paint? I've been a "pencil artist" for years, and I can "feel" my finished work "in my hands", and in my mind. I can achieve texture, depth, passion and wonder with pencil and charcoal. Painting is a total mystery to me. I have tried watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils to no avail; I just end up frustrated and defeated. I have NEVER attempted oils! Some of my "black and white" stuff is so much more interesting, but I want to paint. I taught my daughter to draw as a child; she took art in high school and now is a painter, and it is her passion. Advice?

Hey Chris, I've been wondering, you always talk about going from thin paint to thick paint, even using paint straight out of the tube for the brightest highlights, and I've also watched your video on Bob Ross and how you view his style and approach, I agree with the points you've made, but on the technical side of things, he frequently mentioned that thin paint sticks better? As in, he does the highlights with thinned out paint. Any thoughts on that?
@paintcoach3 жыл бұрын
Bob Ross painted in a certain style and used very specific materials to get the paint to do what he wanted it to do as he layered it in a specific way. This is why he always coated his canvas with "liquid white." For example he would paint the whole sky first then paint trees over it. Most traditional oil painters would not go about it that way. There's no right or wrong it's just a different approach. He also had to finish a painting in 45 min. He gets knocked a lot by painters for his formulaic style but in the end he got a lot of people to start painting which makes him a legend in my book.

im starting oil paint im having trouble taking my time at the end of a piece I feel I rushed it (end up spending maybe 3 hours spaced over 2 days) how long do you suggest i spend every day on one piece ? thanks
@GalleryBry3 жыл бұрын
That’s something that will be unique to your situation. The more you can paint the better but we all have limited time. So the real key is consistency. It’s helpful to set aside a block of time each day to devote to painting. Make it a habit, just like brushing your teeth. Make it an achievable amount of time. If you block an hour and can’t sustain that, it’s easy to get frustrated. Pick a block of time you know you can always achieve. And if you need more time you can always keep painting. For me I always spend 30 minutes a day minimum painting and filming for KZbin, and I keep going if I have more time. I hope that helps. The key is to pick a time you know you can sustain. :)

I was just talking about this earlier today... I mostly use Apple Barrel paints and buy my panels from the kids department because they are half the cost of the ones in the "artist" isles so I can just go for it... try things out, cover them up and try again no worries. .... not working out? Bam- lay down a new solid background and start again. I've finished 6 paintings in the last 2 weeks and have 5 more going I should have done by this weekend.
