Can you make a detail video on what all you learnt during your terracotta workshop, also did you take up additional course to improve on your skill.. Some tips to keep in mind when you are looking out for taking up terracotta course.
@nehagopinathpillai4 жыл бұрын
Certainly! So the workshop was brief - it was a pair of earrings and a necklace. But post that I learnt a lot separately from my sir. I also went for a brief sculpting class before doing terracotta jewellery. That's how I knew I was interested in clay. But my learning has been a continuous process. I met other artists who did their education specializing in ceramics in both India and abroad. They gave me some more insight on working with clay. After coming to US, I enrolled at a local community College to pursue my ceramics course this year (8 months - 2 semesters) but unfortunately due to Covid the college is currently closed we aren't having any online sessions as this had to be hands-on. To me this isn't a hobby, so I would typically look at all possible ways to improve. That's been my journey so far :)

How to protect that brightness. I have used sometimes gold dust as also pearl gold. What do you suggest. Secondly what kind of varnish should be used for the top coating ? If I use clear nailpolish the pcs become sticky some times. The spray varnish discolour my jewelry especially gold

Hello! The clay shouldn't be too soft or too hard. It has to be pliable enough to work it into the shape you desire, and shouldn't be so hard that it cracks easily. Once you start working with clay, one should ideally get the hang of it.

Glad you find it useful. Bisque firing is at about 900-1000 degrees C. This can vary a little based on where you go. Say if its a studio, they would ideally know whats best and ideal for all the clay bodies. As i was saying, bisque firing is at about 900-1000 degrees C, the temperature is gradually raised and not achieved in one go. It's gradually raised for a duration of approx 8 hours and cooled for another 8 hours or more inside the kiln. But i would highly recommend getting this done by a professional and they would know what needs to be done. Community firings for pottery are very common and you could check if there is a studio that provides firing facilities. My work is fired at cone 06. That would be under 1000 degrees C.

Clay how to select
@nehagopinathpillai3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what kind of work you want to use the clay for. For terracotta jewellery I would fine low fire earthenware clay would work well. Go by a trusted brand or studio for your clay needs. You can check this: clay-joy.business.site/

Hi Neha I am from Mumbai . Since you have expertised in this particular field I would like to ask you one question . From past two three years I have been buying terracotta jewellery from exhibitions .I just love the designs so much but unfortunately the pieces have been buying are so fragile that they tend to break easily . The wire loop connecting with the clay piece gets detached easily . Why does this happen and how can I prevent it ? Also how to choose good strong piece of jewellery while shopping in such exhibitions?

Hi Rutuja, Sorry that your experience with Terracotta jewellery hasn't been very good so far. Being made from clay, they can be fragile. So typically when sold, the vendor must inform you about the pros and cons. But with regard to the nichrome wire, that mostly shouldn't happen if the jewellery is fired well. Typically when clay is fired well, it shrinks. This in-turn helps the clay grab on to the wire even more. But sometimes when people use thinner gauge wires or any other material apart from nichrome or kanthal, it may fall off. As a customer, you can always enquire with the vendor on the process they follow. You can ask them the post product care info and they must be able to help you with that information. Hope this helps.

@@nehagopinathpillai thank you so much for your suggestion . I wasn't aware about the nichrome wire ...next time I would definitely ask all the details .

@@rutujadandekar5622 That's alright, as a customer, you aren't expected to know all the raw materials, but feel free to ask the designer. They might happily explain the process to you.
