my opinion on the napa basecoat and clear coat failure is it sounds like wax and grease removal did not completely dry completely it may have look dry maybe it was not completely dry and cause adhesion failure

Be sure to have at least 2 air vapor filters. One at the compressor and one at the gun to minimize oil and dampness in your paint. He forgot to mention filtering. VERY VERY IMPORTANT

sanding grits, usa vs eu : one of the things that isn't immediately obvious to most beginners watching youtube videos is the eu grits are like double the usa numbers so a 400 grit in usa will be equivalent to a 800 grit in uk / eu i mention this as some of your veiwers like myself are not in usa and might think 400 grit eu style is ok to base over where as its way too coarse

If he used epoxy primer of brands you have to put your hardner in and wait 15 minutes before you can spray it. When I first started using ppg epoxy primer I was having whole panels peel off with a razor.

Thanks for bringing that up. That didn't cross my mind, but that epoxy may have an induction time. Will need to ask NAPA for the technical data sheet to know for certain. I knew someone on here would think of something. Thank You!

@@CarAddictGarage Yeah most epoxy primers have a induction time. I was having come back where I epoxy primed a bare metal hood and 3 months later the paint was flying off on the highway all the way to the bear metal

Thank you for the great content! I'm also planning to paint my S10 pickup this spring or summer (1st time painting with a gun) and would like to do a metallic color (TBD) base/clear. I was considering painting a part at a time as I don't have a booth but that's obviously not the way to go. However can you do a coat or two of base with it apart and then put it together and then final coat or two of base and then clear everything? Also how do you handle the places you can't get to when it's together such as between the cab and bed? If I can ask one more, are darker metallics more forgiving regarding technique? Thank you!
@CarAddictGarage
@CarAddictGarage 3 жыл бұрын
About the only way to get between the bed and the cab is to remove the bed. As far as matching, it really depends how translucent the paint is. More pigment and less metallic will be easier than more metallic and less pigment. Golds, silvers, and light to medium blues have caused me the most problems with matching. Whites are also difficult, especially if it has pearls in it.

@@CarAddictGarage Thank you so much for the reply! I didn't quite ask my question about between the bed and cab correctly. What I meant to ask was do you have to do anything special such as not spraying the exterior sides of the bed and cab when you do the opposing faces as I'm assuming you want it back together so as to paint the each side of the truck (cab and bed) at the same time. Said differently, you spray the back of the cab and the exterior front of the bed with base, then put the cab and bed together, spray the rest of the truck with base, then take them back apart and follow the same steps with clear? Thanks for the color info as well. I think I'll go with something other those. Thank you again for your reply and your channel!

painting one panel at a time: yep totally agree with the video, you can get some metallic to match doing one at a time but you need to have good control over you parameters and be very robotic about the way you lay the same number of coats down, one for the more experienced sprayers i'm thinking. if its like a gold metallic then i'd say not very easy. the other factor in doing one panel at a time vs full respray is the space and ventilation available. if you only have a 2-4 car garage with no vent then you going to working in a fog within two panels and have the overspray drop down on everything when it settles. i'm in London UK so thats pure residential and i cant let 2k fumes out side the garage or the council will be all over me, i set up an fan with a filter for extraction, a 150mm ducting takes that around to an imput filter back into the garage so its like a recirculating filter system, works pretty well for 2-4 panels at a time, size is 6 meters x 4 meters so not a very big space at all. the advantage of doing a couple of panels at a time is you can do the shell on its own then do the doors and hood trunk when you want it also saves on alot of masking material, more than you think esp 2 inch tape. even at work i prefer to respray a car blown apart unless its a bad edge to edge paint

hi donnie , I was reading about lead filler soldering witch is old school body filler now they sell lead free soldering filler witch is good. i have read lead free soldering cant be use for rust repair holes , i thought you have to cut out the rust hole to put new sheet metal in? . would it be safe to use lead free soldering for small rust holes no bigger than a 25$ quarter?
@CarAddictGarage
@CarAddictGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I would prefer to cut and weld a patch. The reason is the rust may expand past the hole on the back side.

when doing rust repair inside the car and cutting rusted metal out and putt in new sheet metal in the vehicle would i have to wash interior metal with dove dish soap with water and use wax and remover first then start doing the rust repair ? can i just start cutting out rusted out metal and start weld new metal with out washing with dove dish soap and water and wax and grease remover ? ?
@CarAddictGarage
@CarAddictGarage 3 жыл бұрын
When working with rust and bare metal I would not expose the metal to water. I would clean it with wax and grease remover before applying filler or priming. Be sure to use weld-thru primer on the surface that will not be able to get to after welded. amzn.to/3dCQQqn

you can paint an entire car with rattle cans, make an appointment with your gp for a new thumb first though!! if you have never sprayed with a spray gun i would suggest making sure youcan get an even coat over a large area first on a test panel size of a roof or hood you will need a ton of cans so the cost will be expensive compared to buying a tin of even the cheapest cellulouse you can get 2k spray cans that are one use only, again stupid expensive another rattle can system you can get is the type you pour your own mix into then screw on the top and pump up the pressure with a bicycle pump, might work out cheaper next up would be a small compressor with a mini spray gun, the cost will go into the set up but the results will be far greater than the rattle cans. so yes you can do it with a rattle can it will be like coulouring in a poster with a ball point pen vs a paint brush
